Saving the World...Again
James slowly opened his eyes. The double image of a middle-aged woman floated above him. James blinked and the image slowly drifted together to form one person. The woman smiled, then called to someone out of James's sight. "Gladys! He's awake!"
James blinked again and pushed himself upright. He was lying on a bed with starched white sheets, which matched the other beds that lined the walls of the room he was in. Fairly sure that he was not at Thomas's kidnappers' hideout, James glanced around to the two women standing by his bedside. One was tall, thin and in her late thirties with a kind face. The other was short and stout, with a pinched mouth and beady black eyes.
"Where am I?" James asked, scrutinizing the two women. "Who are you? What am I doing here?"
"You're at the Bridgeport Orphanage," the taller woman said.
James nearly lept out of the bed. "What? I'm not an orphan!" Never, he thought. Never again. That's what he told me.
The woman patted his arm reassuringly. "I'm sure you aren't. The orphange was just the nearest place that had decent medical treatment. Gladys and I found you unconcious in an alley with a horrible injury on your head. We took you here to get you patched up."
In an alley? The last thing James remembered was something hitting his head, hard. Then--nothing. Gingerly he probed his skull and almost gasped at the pain.
"Here," the short woman said kindly, handing James an icepack. "Just keep that on your head." James accepted it gratefully. "Thanks."
"In answer to your other question, my name is Matilda Fairbanks and this is my friend Gladys March. You can call us Matilda and Gladys, though," the tall woman said. "Now what's your name?"
James froze. Doubtlessly the women wanted to call his dad and tell him where he was so that he could come pick him up. James couldn't have that happen! Not only would he be grounded forever for sneaking out, by the time he got home Thomas and his kidnappers could be anywhere! Desperately searching his mind for a way out of his predicament, James started as his stomach gave a loud gurgle.
Gladys frowned. "Oh, you poor dear. Are you hungry?"
"Yeah," James said, realizing suddenly that he had not eaten anything since lunch, and it had to be well into the night by now. "Starving." As if to prove his point, his stomach growled again.
"We'll fix you something up in the kitchen," Gladys said briskly. "Can you walk over there?"
"Yeah, I'm fine," James said, getting up off the bed. He was careful to keep the icepack on his aching head. Whoever had knocked him out had obviously not taken any chances.
"You still haven't told us your name," Matilda reminded James as she and Gladys led him down a corridor.
"It's James," James said, slightly distracted by his surroundings. The orphanage was well built; it reminded him of his school. Concrete walls and concrete floors--at least they kept it clean and they painted the walls and tiled the floors. The Bridgeport Orphanage was obviously a much better place to grow up than the orphanages James had been in.
"Your last name, James?" Matilda asked in a resigned sort of voice.
James grinned up at her a little sheepishly. "Sorry, but I don't give out my last name to strangers. You can never be too careful."
"I understand," Matilda said. "How about you call your parents after you eat something?"
"Yeah, sure," James said. Here, in an orphanage, the word parents gave him a painful twinge. He ignored the feeling, telling himself sternly that he had a parent who loved and cared for him.
"Here we are at the kitchen," Gladys said as they approached a pair of shiny silver doors. James pushed through them, already scanning the room beyond the metal.
((I figured this would be a good place for James to meet some other characters. Someone could be hanging out in the kitchen just eating a sandwich or something, and they could help James escape and find Thomas. And sorry about the long post, but I wanted to include all the details!))

Raven walked in, looking around and then saw James. She looked at him for a moment and then asked Gladys,"Is he new?"
((CAPITALIZATION, ZELDA!! I WILL HAVE YOU BEHEADED FOR THIS!!))
James looked over the short, dark-haired girl with narrowed eyes. Something about her made him think of steel -- cold and unyielding. But, as James knew, that didn't mean she was bad or anything. Actually, steel was one of the best metals to use for protection.
"Oh, no, Raven," Gladys said to the girl with a smile. "We just found him badly hurt and took him here to patch him up a bit. He's assured us that he is not an orphan." You got that right, James thought, studying the girl--Raven?--intently. So she was an orphan? That would explain the steeliness. You want to survive while being on your own, you had to be tough. James knew from personal experience.

((Ahem--what Zelda? What the heck is Raven talking about? Why did she say that? Gladys said they found him badly injured! What is Raven doing???))
"I did hit my head," James said before Gladys could say anything. "Or--actually, something hit my head. But I don't have any brain damage or anything. It wasn't that hard." He looked at Gladys and Matilda. "Please, can I get something to eat?"
Raven looked at him, and then walked over to the fridge, and pulled out some fruit. "Catch!" She said, throwing an apple towards him.
"Thanks," James said, deftly catching the fruit. Now totally ignoring everyone in the room, he leaned up against a counter and took a big bite, frantically searching his mind for a way to get out of here and rescue Thomas--before it was too lae!
Raven heard his thoughts and frowned. She leaned against the fridge and then said to Gladys,"remind me when I can get outta this h*** hole?"
Matilda sighed. "Raven, watch your language," she said reprovingly. "You should be glad that you're here and not out in the streets or something!"
"Yeah," James added, taking another bite out of his apple. "This place is actually pretty neat compared to other places I've been."
"Raven, we've been over this a thousand times," Gladys said gently. "When you're adopted or offically an adult, you can go live someplace else. But for now, you have to stay here."
((Oh yeah, and once James realizes that Raven can read minds, she won't be able hear him any more. Thomas can read minds, and James got plenty of practice keeping him from finding out stuff James doesn't want him to know.))

Raven looked at Matilda, sending her a poison gaze and said,"I'd much rather be on the streets than be insulted by the fact that that won't happen."
"What, becoming an adult won't happen?" James snorted. "Don't be silly. This isn't Neverland--you're gonna grow up." He met the glare Raven sent at him with a sardonic smile.
Matilda sighed again as Gladys started making a sandwich for James. "Please, Raven, why bring that up now?"
Matilda sighed again as Gladys started making a sandwich for James. "Please, Raven, why bring that up now?"
Raven smiled cleverly at him and then said,"because that won't happen. Don't ask. And Matty, I bring it up now as I always have been since I was dragged here, AGAINST. MY. WILL."
James checked the clock that hung above the fridge. Almost half an hour had passed since he had gotten knocked out! Thomas's kidnappers could already be on their way out of town! He had to get out of here, fast.
"Could you please tell me where the restroom is?" James asked the grownups politely.
"Down the hall and to your left, sweetie," Matilda told him.
"Thanks," James said. He pushed through the double doors and headed down the hall and to the bathroom. It was small, but clean.
No windows. Oh well -- it didn't matter anyway. After checking to make sure that no one else was in the bathroom, James rested a hand on the wall closest to the outdoors and concentrated. He could just tunnel through underground, but why bother when escape was just through one wall?

Raven looked at Matilda and then walked out. She waked past the Bathroom and to her bedroom. Then, she heard it. A sound like the wall crumbling. She stayed very quiet, and then listened for any disturbances. She smiled as she heard the wall part. She then stood, and then ran as quietly as she could over to her closet and then pulled out her backpack filled with all the things she would need when she ran away that night. She got dressed in her all black, home-made, durable clothing, and pulled on her black combat hand-me-down boots, and then put on a newer, black eyepatch over her blind eye, and put her hair up in two pigtails. Then she waited.

Raven frowned. This is taking too long. She thought. She stood up, and then looked at the wall infront of her. She took a breath, and then moved the carpet off of a certain part of the floor to reveal a large hole in the ground. She dropped her backpack into it, and then jumped in behind it, closing the opening to leave no trace. She pulled the pack onto her back and then waited, making sure no one was coming. Time for your great birthday escape, Raven.
((REVEAL, NOT REVEIL!!! GAAAAAAH!!! IT KILLS ME THAT PEEPS DON'T HAVE PERFECT SPELLING LIKE ME!!))
James stepped through the person-sized hole he had made in the wall of the bathroom, then turned and sealed it back up so that it looked just like it had before. Actually, it was a lot stronger--instead of concrete blocks stacked up on top of each other, the wall was now one solid stretch of rock. James smiled and patted the stone, feeling it shiver happily beneath his fingers, hopped onto his bike (which he found after a few moments of searching the area surrounding the orphanage), and went off to go (hopefully) save Thomas.

Raven saw James move out of the scenery and then bolted out of her hiding place. She ran into the nearby woods and flipped onto one of the trees. She then ran through their branches, in the opposite direction of the orphanage.
James got off his bike a couple blocks away from where Thomas was being held prisoner. He carefully hid it in a nearby empty warehouse, then sealed up all the entrances with rock. The bike was his only mode of transportation, and he wanted to keep it safe.
James crept up to a dilapidated old warehouse, carefully watching his step to make sure nothing he did alerted the kidnappers to his presence. Carefully he snuck up to a large, dirty window near the back of the warehouse and peeked in. Almost immediately he hunkered back down. There had to be about five men in the room, one or two of whom he was sure had been looking at the window. Four of them looked like thugs, big and solid and full of muscle. The other man was small and slight. James did a quick calculation and came to the conclusion that he could take all of them just sitting right here. But there would be no point in doing that if Thomas wasn't in there...
James pulled himself up and risked a look through the window again. There were the men--and there was Thomas, tied up and gagged and unconcious on the far wall. James froze for a moment, staring at his friend, normally so capable--of doing anything lying helpless on the ground.
One of the thugs' eyes flicked toward him. James ducked down, but not quickly enough. "Hey! There's a kid outside that window!" the man yelled.
James gritted his teeth. He really didn't want to fight them without being able to see them...
He pressed a hand to the ground and twisted it a bit. The very loud sound of four big men falling over sounded behind him. James jumped up, threw up the window (encouraging the metal a bit, of course) and vaulted through and into the room.
Four men picked themselves up off the ground and scowled at James. A loud bang from across the room altered James to the arrival of one, two, three more men bursting through an old wooden door. They looked at James in surprise, then moved forward to join the other thugs.
James looked around at the angry faces surrounding him. Suddenly he thought that maybe some of these men might have the ability to control something as well...but it was too late to go back now.
James looked at the men with murder in their eyes and smiled.
((Normally James would start busting some heads here, but I want to let your charac jump in and fight with him, so...go ahead and bust some heads!))

((YAY!!!))
Raven flipped through the trees and then onto the old building where she had seen James at, and then saw the older men. She saw the look in their eyes and scowled. Now, that isn't fair. She thought. Seven on one is bad. She sighed, and then flipped off the roof, and sent a spin kick to two of the men, making them stumble slightly. They all looked at her with extra malice, and she smiled evilly. She looked over at James, who was beside her, and said,"I dunno what you are doing here, but none of this looks good. You'd better have something up your sleeve."

Poppy stared out of the window, sighing. She was bored and the other girls wouldn't let her play with her. That's when she saw Raven.Raven was currently Poppy's favourite girl. Of course, Raven didn't know this. Most of Poppy's heroes never found out about their secret admirer and simply found her annoying. Nonetheless, Poppy felt inclined to follow the older girl.
She crept through the orphanage hallway as discreetly as she could. When she saw Raven uncover a hole in the ground, Poppy started freaking out. Silently, of course. She didn't want to bring attention to whatever Raven was doing. Obviously, Raven wanted it to be a secret. Why else would she be hiding?
When Raven ducked down through the hole, Poppy followed. When Raven ran after some kid, Poppy followed after hesitating slightly. She knew that Raven was doing something she wasn't supposed to and that therefore she was doing something she wasn't supposed too by following her. But her curiosity was so great that she followed anyhow, struggling to keep quiet and not be seen.
((NO, SHE IS NOT A STALKER. Poppy is just a kid who is too curious for her own good. D: ))
((HOW CUTE!!!!!Raven has a secret admirer!! YAY!))
Raven launched a spin kick to one of the men and then launched a fire ball at the other one.
Raven launched a spin kick to one of the men and then launched a fire ball at the other one.
((Mhm...That's just how she is. And, besides, it was the only way to get my chara involved so...C: By the way, she's not gonna show up until you guys finish fighting. Lawlz, she's a slow runner...))
James looked at the girl beside him, startled for a moment. It was--what's her name--Raven, from the orphanage?! Confusion mixed with shock rolled through his brain, but he automatically replied, "Oh, I wouldn't worry about me."
As Raven leapt up and delivered a round-house kick to the Thug #1, James stamped the ground once and kicked the rock that had flown up in response straight toward Thug #2. It flew a bit lower that he had intended and hit the man in the stomach and he fell to the ground, winded. James scowled, and with a shoving motion directed the earth below him to drive Thug #2 toward the back wall, where he slammed into a metal shelf that promptly collapsed upon him. Another thug promptly slammed into the wall next to Thug #2, his clothes smoking. Waitaminute...had Raven just thrown a fireball?
James was distracted from his thoughts by the threat of two thugs approaching him. One held a crowbar, and one held a large metal baton. James grinned. This was all just too easy!
Crowbar Guy's weapon suddenly twisted and looped, effectively crushing his hands between it. Baton Dude's stick suddenly rose up and hit him savagely on the head and he crumpled to the ground, unconcious. Reveling in his victories, James didn't really pay attention to the guy with the gun behind him.
BAM! James didn't even have enough time to duck. Although the gunsman was a crack shot, the bullet only created a rush of wind that disturbed James's hair, thanks to a small shove he had given it as it sped by. Panting, James glanced at Raven to see how she was getting on with her adversaries.

((Oh yeah--the small guy has to get away with Thomas or else the story will be over too quickly. Btw, the small guy can also control earth, but not metal. (So James can totally kick his @$$!! But he won't--not in the warehouse at least. Sigh...)))
Raven flipped onto her hands and sent a spin kick to one of the thugs, and then got low to the ground, and shot out some fire, burning one of the thug's legs to a crisp.
((Lessee, that's...six thugs down, one to go. That would be the guy with the gun, right? Just leave him to James...))
Before Gun Guy could shoot at James again, James yanked at the pistol and a loud CRACK echoed through the cavernous warehouse as Gun Guy pulled the trigger. The shot hit the ceiling and a moment after that James had the gun in his hand. He smiled evilly at Gun Guy, twirling the weapon carelessly. "Didn't your mommy tell you that you shouldn't play with guns?"
((No, he's not going to shoot Gun Guy. Remember, he doesn't want to kill anyone. I leave it to Raven to dispatch the last thug with one of her oft-repeated spin kicks.))

"Didn't your mommy tell you that you shouldn't play with guns?"Poppy panted, staring at the scene in front of her with wide, frightened eyes. There was this scary kid...with a gun...pointed at a big kid (read: adult). What had she gotten herself into?
Poppy almost turned around back to the orphanage. However that would be hard seeing as she had no idea how to get back and...well, I've said it before: she was way too curious for her own good. Why would Raven be here with that scary guy? Why were they fighting? Why couldn't they just get along and go skipping towards the sunset hand in hand like she saw in that one movie?
And so she stayed, not completely immersed in the fighting, but off to the side, clasping her hands in front of her and praying to whoever and whatever there was to pray to. After all when the fighting ended, she would get her answers.
((Skipping towards the sunset? Hand in hand? Who, James and Raven, Raven and Gun Guy, or all three? Gah!! I can't stand it!! She's eleven? And where's Zelda? I need her to hit the last guy!! Rrrrgh!!))
Gun Guy crumpled to the ground in a heap. "Nice job," James complimented Raven, then scanned the room for Thomas, absentmindedly crushing the gun in his hand. ((No, he does not have super-strength--but the gun is metal, so he can crush it quite easily.)) A sudden movement caught his eye--It was the smaller man James had seen, carrying Thomas! James dropped the gun and started after the man, only to feel a slight tremor underneath his feet as a wall of stone rose up, blocking the doorway. Burning with anger, James pulled it down and ran down a dark hallway.
Raven kicked the gun guy again, and then ran after James, following him into the hallway, just to make sure he wouldn't get killed. Not that she cared.
James burst through a pair of double doors and realized that he was at the front of the warehouse. In the street before him, Thomas's captor was hurriedly loading Thomas into a black van and jumping into the drivers seat. James growled and clenched his fists. This guy was not going to get away with his friend!!
As James clenched his fists, the underside of the van slowly crumpled and bent, rendering it useless for driving. However, this was the first time James had tried controlling metal over a distance like that, and he quickly lost the energy needed to control it. Blinking stars out of his eyes, James managed to see the man, now looking panicked, throwing Thomas into the back of a black SUV. But before James could do anything, the man waved his hand at him and James felt a sudden sharp pain on the side of his head. Fireworks exploded before his eyes and James passed out.

Raven had just ran out to see the black SUV drive off, and then see James pass out. She ran to his side, and caught him. "James, whats wrong?" She asked as she shook him gentley. Okay, WORST BIRTHDAY EVER She thought, as she tried to figure out whats going on with James. Why am I doing this? A few minutes ago I didn't even care about this faggot. Whats wrong with me?!
Raven saw James wasn't gonna wake up, so she took hold of him, and picked him up. She stood, and then tried to figure out which predicament to go to. Well, I could go back to the orphanage and get yelled at, OR I could go into the woods and find a nice hide out. I choose the last one. She turned, and then began to walk around the house, and towards the woods. She was about to walk straight into the forest but was suddenly stopped by the sound of movement coming from the bushes a few feet away from her. "Come on out," she said, ready for battle.
((Thats your cue, Monica!))
((Thats your cue, Monica!))
((Oh no!! I just realized that in my previous story involving James that I haven't actually written yet James gets kidnapped. I seem to have a thing for kidnapping...I wonder if I'm going to get Harumi kidnapped next?))
((Lol. Yeah, that's right, I'M BACK. O: ))Poppy opened an eye. The fighting had stopped. Raven was looking in her direction, shouting. Had she been discovered? Poppy crawled out of the bushes and looked up.
"Raven?"
There was the boy next to Raven. He was hurt and Poppy didn't recognize him.
"Who's he?" she asked.
She really, really hoped Raven wouldn't be mad.
((Ugh, I can't write very well...>> ))
"Poppy?! What the h*** are you doing here?!" Raven asked, ticked off that she had not only an unconscious boy to deal with, but now a kid girl who followed her out of the orphanage. Who knows how many other kids followed her out.
