I really enjoyed these stories and read many of them back-to-back. They were a nice glimpse into life during the war. I liked how they were placed in chronological order so that you could feel the war progress. What I liked most about them was that they always ended up being more than I expected and at many times were funny. Favorites include Year of Decision where we see that danger in the battle field is preferred over housework...and in Goodbye My Love the tension and stress of leaving for war is built up so much and then the ending is wonderful.
Danielle, I agree--I liked the chronological order also.
Goodbye My Love was one of my favorites too--the ending was so powerful. It was so sad that Ruth's husband was leaving, but it was almost worse when his departure was delayed by a week. It was quite a powerful story!
I also liked Lunch with Mr Biddle - the characters in it were somewhat silly and frivolous, and it was nice comic relief.
Good Evening, Mrs. Craven was my other favorite - she really gave such depth to "Mrs. Craven" - she was a very sympathetic character.
