In this post I'd like to open up the idea that motivated this group for discussion. How are we to know which LDS books are classics when they are not available for purchase at Deseret Book anymore? Most LDS books are only in print for a short while and then regardless of their intrinsic value they go out of print. These books are not in the public library (unless you live in Utah) and they don't all appear in a search on Amazon.com. I personally love religion and yet gag on religious books unless they are really well written. What is your criteria for a well written book on religion?

Thank you for your comments Tyler. I'd love to know what titles you have really enjoyed. I don't have access to LDS literature except through online bookstores and I need to know a title to find a title. I'd like this group to be an online bookshelf that gives the titles to books that have been in print at one time and personal comments on them if possible for interested people to find if nothing more A TITLE.

Tim (brownwood) | 1 comments I know that this thread might be old, but I just came across it. I am curious, are you looking for titles that delve into LDS religious doctrine, church history, fiction, by General Authorities only?

Personally, I have enjoyed the biographies the best, I find that as in all things there are good writers and mediocre writers regardless of the publisher. My favorite biography has to be the one on President Kimball. This book really helped me know him as a real person; he had trials and decisions and problems and successes and the book made him seem real. Other biographies I have read don't help me to see the man, it is almost as if he had no problems, no decisions, and every thing came easily to him, which, of course did not happen (some of these are called hagiographies if I remember correctly); every one has problems, decisions, doubts, worries, hopes, fears, etc. and I enjoy seeing how they solved the problems in their lives and overcame adversity.

The Autobiography of Parley P Pratt is also a very good read. Old titles to be sure, just not sure what kinds of recommendations to make.

Thanks, Tim

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm mostly interested in collecting titles since I don't have a list of great religious literature at my disposal for future reference. Will you give the group a title or author for the biography on President Kimball you like. Just add it to our bookshelf.
Thanks!
