Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) For those of us who never left the 80s decade musically, this is the place to hang out.

I grew up during the '80s, and the radio was always on at both my home and in my mom's car. So, today, I am totally in love with the decade's music. I wish I could find a cd of various artists that I liked. All the ones I look at have a lot of crap in them.

Most of what I listen to comes out of the 80's. Who's your favorite?

My favorites? God, there's many. I like songs from many different artists, but never really had a favorite, except for Duran Duran, Platinum Blond, Haywire, Metallica, and Motley Crue.

But I also like songs from from bands and singers like Cindi Lauper, UB40, Simply Red, David Bowie, The Smiths, The Cars, George Michaels, Bauhaus, Dexy's midnight Runners, and a whole bunch more I can't think of right now.

Ray (woadwarrior) Okay, for me it's "The Stranglers," definitely the Stranglers.

message 11: by Kathrynn (new)

Kathrynn I enjoy the 70's and 80's music. For me, I spend most of my radio at home and in the car on the 70's, 80's and Classic Rock channels (thank you Sirius/XM). Once in awhile I'll find something on the 90's, but then comes a rap song and I'm leaping for the channel changer.

Rap music makes me agitated and snappy. Yikes!

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I love 80s rap music. Not so much current stuff. I think music was just better all around in the 80s. I like to listen to the 80s station on Sirius/XM, and even the songs I didn't love in the 80s, looking back, I can say that they were good songs.

Far and away my fave 80s music is new wave. I love it!

message 13: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) I get a kick out of '80s rap music. It wasn't as raunchy as the rap today. I love Salt 'N' Pepa and TLC.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) The Old Skool rap was richer in content, IMHO.

message 15: by Carl (new)

Carl I. | 96 comments The 80's had easily the WORST productions though. So many possibly great songs were killed by those terrible drum productions. So many great albums killed by time due to them also. Def Leppard's "Pyromania" suffers severely from it.

Oddly enough though, the Punk scene actually ended up sounding the best! Low budgets, as it turned out, saved them from being over produced and actually created a more timeless sound. The releases by acts such as Minor Threat, Adolescents, and even NY Hardcore acts like Agnostic Front and Cro-Mags sound great still. Not to mention the UK '82 bands such as Discharge (still sound brutal beyond belief) and GBH, still have the weight and power they did in the 80's. Their releases actually even sound better than the beloved 80's Thrash acts such as Slayer and Metallica.

I understand that thought about Punk, as that is what most people think. But in all reality, the musicianship in Punk is pretty darn tooting high. Drummers especially in the Punk scene tend to be pretty amazing. One of my buddies, a full blown Metalhead who is an amazing drummer (fairly well known in Metal even, by the bands and producers) always hated Punk. Then I started showing him some of the bands, and he was blown away by the quality of the drumming.

Punk deals with social and political topics mostly. Few bands actually go on attacks against their parents, and the ones who have do it more for a novelty (think Suicidal Tendencies and the tune "Institutionalized" and certain Ramones tunes).

On your list, bands like Cheap Trick, Yes, and Queen straddle more than one decade. Though Yes had the couple of massive hits in the 80's, they will always be grounded in the 70's, IMO. Heck, Cheap Trick is still going and is recording their new album right now. They're local boys for me. They all live about 20 minutes from me.

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) Ok for Siiriues XM Stations

Classic Rewind
Boneyard
Undergroud Garage
Classic Vinyl.

Suicidal Tendancies make me laugh. Institutionilized is a very funny song.

Would you guys consider Joan Jett Punk? She really fits your description of punk up there Carl.

message 20: by Carl (last edited Apr 13, 2010 01:46PM) (new)

Carl I. | 96 comments She was always borderline. At the time of the Runaways the Punk scene was in its infancy, so it was kind of hard to say. They were more Punks than anything else though if one was to categorize them and didn't want to just label them Rock N Roll. Obviously with the direction their solo careers went, Joan was more Punk while Lita was obviously Metal.

message 21: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) Yea I know all about the Runaways. In fact I'm writing a book on them. Their live albums really good. I've always thought of Joan as both classic rock and punk.

message 22: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) Dead Kennedys....now there's a punk band for ya...

message 23: by Carl (new)

Carl I. | 96 comments THAT is pretty much exactly what I am talking about when I say incredible musicianship in Punk. Jello was the "star", but the rest of those guys are crazy talented.

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

I wish I was born to see that. 80's ruled.

message 25: by Mariel (new)

Mariel (fuchsiagroan) I have to add New Order. (and Joy Division will forever be a favorite of mine.)

The Cure had their biggest hit in the '90s (Friday I'm In Love), but they are the quintessential '80s band. Growing up they were THE band for me. I believe they shaped a lot of my tastes that would continue for my life up until now (who knows now that I'm 30. I must be getting older 'cause Journey are appealing to me).

I love the Runaways too. (They are a big part of a favorite book of mine by Martin Millar. Lonely Werewolf Girl.)

In my opinion music can be edgy or dark and still sound happy. Sometimes that makes for the best music. Joan Jett can be punky in my book.

Billy Joel= classic. Nobody can top him.
Journey. *Sigh* what would we do without Journey?

message 29: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) Dittoes on your post. I have an even earlier performer what about Elvis? He was hot in the 50's and 60's, especially in that black leather.

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) Eh, women in music are my specialty. Although if it's good, I'll listen no matter what gender.

message 36: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) Same with me. Doesn't matter if they've got the pipes to hit the high notes, I am a fan, ala Janis Joplin, Pat Benatar, etc.

message 37: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) Exactly.
And it seems a lot of women in rock were emerging in the eighties. That's kind of the origins of Riot Grrl
