Stephen (havan) What would you all say to a writing challenge in May?

I've heard of these before in other sites and the Writers group that I attended in NYC years ago had one every month assigned by the lady that led the group.

We'd have to propose and then agree on a challenge before April 31st then we'd all write a story with a deadline of May 31st. We'd get to read and comment on the stories as they are submitted and then optionally pick a favorite.

What do you say? The NYC group found it to be a real growth experience and creativity booster.

Some past challenges in the NYC group were:
Write a short story using any locales and characters that are an update of Aesop's "The Fox who had Lost his Tail" The winner of that was by a guy who wrote about foreskins.

Write a bifurcated short story (two parts) The first that paints a villain and the second that explains the villain. For that one I picked a terrorist bomber but I wasn't very sucessful with it.

Write a short story that includes an unrequited, undisclosed love.

Stephen (havan) Gotta agree. Writing IS work.

Many professional writers tell aspiring authors that they should resolve to spend 2 hours a day writing.

A serious athlete wouldn't dream of competing without training first. Neither can writers. The only difference is that the muscles WE exercise are our hearts, minds and souls.

What I'm proposing is that we needn't train alone.

Laurena | 211 comments I think we should give it a go. I was in another goodreads writing group, two actually, and we did contests...unfortunately, those groups 'died'.

Suzie Conquest (MsConquest) | 22 comments I completely agree! I think a challenge is exactly the kind of motivation that some overly busy / sometimes lazy people (not including myself, of course ... wink wink) need to get the brain working and thinking of new things to write about :-) I'm in.

how about we have not just a challenge (we still vote on who's is best) but also give feedback on other ones? that way we learn.
