I actually have many more favorite R.E.M. songs but didn't feel like listing them all. My poor fingers.
T, that link goes to their greatest hits, from 88 to 03. There's some great songs on there, some I had forgotten about. Think i'll have to go get that cd.
I can't believe how many great songs R.E.M. has. Do you remember "Belong"? I love it and understand it more now that I have a child."Belong"
Her world collapsed early Sunday morning
She got up from the kitchen table
Folded the newspaper and silenced the radio
Those creatures jumped the barricades
And have headed for the sea, sea
Those creatures jumped the barricades
And have headed for the sea
She began to breathe
To breathe at the thought of such freedom
Stood and whispered to her child: belong
She held the child and whispered
With calm, calm: belong
Stood and whispered to her child; belong
She held the child and whispered
With calm, calm: belong
These barricades can only hold for so long
Her world collapsed early Sunday morning
She took the child held tight
Opened the window
A breath, this song, how long
And knew, knew: belong
This song gives me the chills whenever I hear it.
Here's a video of the song:

I absolutely LOVE Murmur, but will pass on everything else they have ever done. I respect them, and love that they never officially replaced Bill Berry, but just didn't like the direction they went.
How great is Bill Berry's uni-brow? He was always my favorite band members. Quiet and did his job well. Hope he's in good health after his medical scare.
He had an aneurysm that was caught early enough. It was soon after that he chose to retire and become a farmer. Last I heard he was doing great and thrilled to be living a normal life where the furthest he ever was from home was in town.
Man, sounds like Berry's living the good life to me. I'm so glad they caught that in time. Again, I really, really like him. This happened years ago, Chick. I think they were on tour and he was getting bad headaches and passed out while playing the drums. Not sure if it was in rehearsal or in concert.
I think it was just as they were heading out for a sound check. I don't think he ever made it to the kit.
Life's Rich Pagent <3 it.I am, I am, I am Superman, and I can do anything!
You don't really love that guy you make it with now do you?
I know you don't love that man coz I can see right through you.
OK, i like REM, and I have a small brush with greatness story to go with them.I saw them in concert in the early 80's, in Nashville. They were the opening act, for, wait for it...................
English Beat (I LOVE THEM)
Later I was in the limo with them on the way to some sleazy campus party. small brush with greatness
Ah.. REM, great band! Man on the moon and Near wild heaven were cool songs. Do you all rememeber the song Stand in '88 I think it was?
Wow, you met them??? But like a long time ago? Not to make you sound old, but a long time for me? Cool! My aunt met the guys from Judas Priest before they were big.
Guitar Chick-Headbanger wrote: "Wow, you met them??? But like a long time ago? Not to make you sound old, but a long time for me? Cool! My aunt met the guys from Judas Priest before they were big."It was barely met them, like just in their vicinity. English Beat was trying to score drugs, I said Hi, don't have any, REM was just 'around' us. That's why it is a slight brush. I just love to tell the story because they were an opening act for a band that is not really together anymore and was never as successful as REM.
Yes, it was a long time ago, before you were born.....
Do you ever get tired of hearing that phrase?
Here is another one, "I was your age when I saw the concert". That is the truth.
Yes, this was before Michael Stipe became so full of himself.

Michael Stipe is a fabulous song writer. One of his bandmates said something to the effect that he is an expert at putting down on paper words that evoke a flood of memories. I guess he's looking at that subjectively since they've been through so much together, but I feel the same way even though I've never met them.
My favorite R.E.M. songs:
Radio Free Europe
South Central Rain
Drive
Fall on Me
Disturbance at the Heron House
Finest Worksong
It's the End of the World as We Know It
King of Birds
All the songs off Green, especially "Orange Crush," "Hairshirt," and "You Are the Everything."
All the songs off Out of Time, especially "Belong," "Half a World Away," and "Me in Honey."
All the songs off Automatic for the People, with "Nightswimming" being one of my all-time top 5 favorite songs. It is a gorgeous! song.
Love Monster, especially "I Don't Sleep, I Dream," "Bang and Blame," and "Crush with Eyeliner." I love when he sings "she's ten miles of bad road."
I haven't listened to most of their newest stuff, though. I sort of fell out of touch with their music, although I worshiped the ground they walked on back in my twenties.
