The character of Elsie Feather, the main heroine, is loosley based on my great-great-grandmother. I really wanted to write the incredible story of her daughter, my great-great-grandmother, but I opted to begin the story where it all began, where the events of the Trail of Tears would define a nation and all future generations.
Every story has a beginning, and this is the beginning of my family's.
I have had a few people ask me about the the character of Elsie. This is what I want the reader to see her as when as they read her story.
First, I tried to envision what a young woman would be like in those days a young wife, and a young mother, all molded into one woman, Elsie. I look at her character as a young flower, young and beautiful, but as the sotrms of life hit her, she becomes wilted, broken, and about to fall, in the darkest of all winters, but then comes back to life again the moment the sun's rays touch her, and she moves into a more mature and graceful individual. This can actually describe the "every" woman, from the dawn of time, that has had to do battle for her family's survival.
