Kelly A. | 499 comments What are some of your favorite genres? Do you stick with the one or two you like or do you branch out?

I am pretty limited, I tend to read only historical fiction novels....

message 2: by Kallie (new)

Kallie | 42 comments I'm a bit of a sucker for romance novels, but I'd say that I have a fairly eclectic taste, I like memoirs, and fantasy fiction, YA, historical fiction etc. I'm willing to try just about anything!

I can read anything, but I prefer certain fictions: I like mystery/suspense books, have started to really love the classics(working through the 1001) and have noticed a trend towards some fantasy (which really shocks me).

I have a hard time with memoirs, especially if they are about abuse, addictions, murder, etc. I know things like that exist, and I can read all about it in fiction books, but memoirs make it harder to pretend it isn't real. :)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I read pretty much everything however fantasy, YA, historical fiction and mystery dominate my bookshelf.

message 5: by Drew (new)

Drew Wilson (drewhamilton) I like YA, light fantasy, history, and historical fiction. Can't do the vampire thing, just can't.

message 6: by Amy (new)

Amy (signgirlamy) I like a lot of fiction, and mystery and fantasy. I've gotten into YA books a lot more from being on this site, and I was surprised to find that I like a LOT of YA books. I'm trying to read more historical fiction because I've really enjoyed what I've read, but they're just never the exciting books I want to grab off the shelf at the bookstore.

I like memoirs, especially if it's drug/alcohol/life-problem related. I just can't read very many of them over a short period of time - it gets depressing.

I'm not a huge fan of short stories. I hate to see characters come and go so quickly!

message 7: by Kelly A. (new)

Kelly A. | 499 comments I am trying to branch out more and get out of historical fiction a bit, but I find books that take place in 21st century North America bore me to tears. I do like fantasy though.

Ditto on the vampire thing, haha.

message 8: by Alicia (new)

Alicia (kalypso) | 214 comments I don't really stick to a genre. I am not big on romance. I like reading classics. Other than that I pretty much read whatever sticks out...

message 9: by Melanie (new)

Melanie (melaina) | 32 comments I read a bit (ok, a lot) of everything: fantasy, romance, YA, thrillers, historical fiction, fiction, classics and criminal justice books: The first two genres being the ones I read the most, because I read them the fastest: I'll usually balance one or two criminal justice/political science books with about a dozen novels, lol :-) I'll read the first two in the same amount of time I'll read the dozen :-)

Yeah... I'm a bit of a book addict/HEA addict: life just seems depressing enough, and fantasy/romance always has the good guys winning :-)

message 10: by Kayla (new)

Kayla | 604 comments I usually read general fiction, classics and memoirs but I've been reading more YA and fantasy novels lately. I'm also interested in reading more mystery/thriller books, so I've been browsing around for good ones.

I have trouble getting into historical fiction. I have a few that have been on my bookshelf for quite some time, but I will read them one day, eventually. LOL

message 11: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Kayla, I'm sure you've already read some of her books, but if you are looking for mystery Mary Higgins Clark is always amazing.

message 12: by Kayla (new)

Kayla | 604 comments I actually haven't read anything by her yet. I'll definitely look into it. Thanks Kimberly!

message 13: by Amy (new)

Amy (signgirlamy) Kayla, Michael Connelly is my favorite mystery author. I highly recommend you check him out!

message 14: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
Kayla, I agree totally with Kimberly. Love Mary Higgins Clark. I haven't read Michael Connelly though, so I will have to check that out too. Oh, and the Steig Larsson trilogy is good (at least the first two) Impatiently awaiting the third.

message 15: by Amy (new)

Amy (signgirlamy) Stiegg Larsson is awesome! I saw The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo movie over the weekend. It was great, and I loved hearing them talk in Swedish.

The third is out already! The girl who kicked the hornet's nest? Isn't it out in the US yet? It is in Europe and Great Britain.. If anyone is desperate, you can order it off bookdepository.co.uk (no shipping costs anywhere in the world, a really bad idea for compulsive book buyers, lol), paperback, at like 10$...

No, not until the end of the month.

message 18: by Adrianna (new)

Adrianna Grezak (adriannagrezak) I've been getting into historical fiction, historical mysteries, and graphic novels. I generally don't like being confused about the time/setting when I read, which probably explains why I'm into historical genres.

message 19: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments I'm so excited that so many people are getting into historical fiction!! I remember when this group started, I was like the only one who read that genre! Yay!! :)

I mostly read historical fiction, memoirs (anything really except about celebrities), fiction, and european royalty. I read a lot of fiction too. Basically anything involving women with a struggle in life and how they overcome it.

message 20: by Spencer (new)

Spencer (spencerafreeman) I'm with you, Melanie, I'll take a HEA any day.

Of course I'll read anything, but I find myself leaning more toward romance (contemporary & suspense) - mostly because I devour books like those and light reading is always on the menu during the school year when my brain can't take heavy, thought-provoking literature. Not to say I don't appreciate those, but I don't want to strain my brain 24/7!

I've wanted to get more into historical or YA since I've read a little from each genre, but I never know where to start and what I'll like. I guess I'm afraid I'll chose the wrong book and waste time trying to get into it when it's not my cup o' tea.

Any suggestions??

message 21: by Nicholas (new)

Nicholas Beck | 4 comments I basically stick to two main genres in my reading. Horror written by either H. P. Lovecraft or Stephen King, definitely more of Lovecraft. The other genre is a group all its own, Dean Koontz. Anything that Koontz writes, I am going to read, no matter what kind of story it is.

In my writing though, I stick to science fiction and horror. But I don't see myself staying in that small range for very long.

message 22: by M (new)

M Hmm nonfiction mainly, usually psychology and philosophy. Those are the sections I head straight for in bookstores. Other than that I read whatever based on recommendations.

For Fiction, I basically read anything people tell me is good, so I read a lot of random genres there. I love books about dystopias though... I also read random books I find lying about the house that my brothers read... so I've read a lot of random things.

message 23: by Natanya (new)

Natanya (vraisemble) | 255 comments I love dystopia literature, but I read so many different novels and my favorites come from many different genres, so it's hard for me to pick one (besides just fiction in general)!

message 24: by Katie (new)

Katie | 3 comments I love to read lots of different genres. I like historical fiction, fantasy, YA and biographies.

Recently, I have started to read more non-fiction.

message 25: by Caity (new)

Caity (elimarna) My life is dominated by fantasy, but I've been treading the waters in YA fiction lately. I also LOVE WWII. If it is about WWII, I probably want to read it.

Some mystery/suspense/thriller is cool, too, and I like historical fiction and some general fiction. I like a good biography, as well.

What I really need to start reading more of are the classics. I may pick up Anna Karenina if I can find my copy, otherwise perhaps snag my mom's copy of Great Expectations or something. Not really sure yet.

message 26: by Nikki (new)

Nikki It varies. At the moment I mostly read classics, especially 19th century and Victorian. I also love vampire books, but not those YA ones that have been popping up everywhere over the past year. My favourite vampire series is the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice.

message 27: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments I think everyone knows mine :) Historical fiction & memoirs!!

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll pretty much read anything depending on my mood. But what i read the most are YA Fiction, fantasy and historical fiction.

message 29: by Dan (new)

Dan (dwaterfield) Modernist, I'm a complete sucker for Joyce, Woolf and Waugh. Saying that, but still related, I've been getting in to the 19 and 20th century French poets recently, Apollinaire and Baudelare. I'll be delving in to some Rimbaud when I have the chance.
