In your wildest dreams, what would this group be? Do you want something resembling a book club with assigned readings? Do you want to share reviews and thoughts more informally? Can someone figure out which button to press for chocolate?

Mattkinsi | 4 comments I'm all for a book club style group - I need someone to not only be there for force me to read it, generally as I read it I want to talk about it and how to apply it.

Ok, I'm going to start the negotiations by suggesting that we start with Essex Conversations as it's an excellent starting point and gives us a definite format (individual essays!) for accountability and discussion.

(Full disclosure - I've read it before, but not in a while, and would love the opportunity to discuss the various ideas of these very learned folks!)

Mattkinsi | 4 comments That would be awesome - my DRE let me borrow her copy of it, and I haven't had a chance to start reading it yet.

Naomi (naomiking) | 2 comments Essex Conversations works for me. Read/discussed in several places, but I always enjoy fresh perspectives.

Joanna Crawford (joannafc) | 2 comments Sounds great! I read it in "Intro to Lib Religious Education" and parts again this semester in UU Theology. Would like to experience it outside of a class setting. And I need something positive. Just finished "Jamesland."

Ok, folks - let's use a sliver of free time in the next week to read the introduction and first essay (Rev. Dr. Barry M. Andrews - Educating for Faith) and discuss as we see fit. I'll try to blog on it in another sliver of free time.

Catherine Loya (catherinedre) | 1 comments Hi all,

Hope it's ok for me to just jump right in! I found my way here from the MisDRE and Wonder blog, via the UUpdates aggregator. I'm Catherine Loya, DRE at the UU Community Church of Santa Monica, California. I'm excited to take part! Like Kat, I've read Essex Conversations before, but it's been a while and I feel like it's time to revisit it. All the better to do so with some new friends. :)

Glad to have you, Catherine!

I did the reading today - maybe 30 minutes? Now to come up with something insightful to say about it...

Andie (andie_arthur) | 1 comments Hello,

Came here via Naomi's twitter account. I'm all about weaseling my way into book clubs that expose me to books I might otherwise not read. Particularly ones about Unitarian Universalism and faith development.

However, as someone whose profession is in the non-profit world, I tend to be a library goer and less of a book purchaser by neccesity. Any tips on finding Essex Conversations or other Unitarian Universalist specific books that aren't in the Miami Dade County library system? Would inter-library loan work?

Thanks for any suggestions and help!

Andie

Hi, Andie --

Weasel away!

I'm halfway across the nation, so I don't know the extent of your library system! That said, the UU books are often hard to find in public library systems. Got a church library you can borrow from?

Kat
