Steven (tbones) | 408 comments I'm a facebook dude. Are you a Farmville or Restaraunt City junky yet? My wife and kid are hooked on that stuff now...I mean crazy hooked.

Charlie (bitsyblingbooks) here is my facebook page. Love to add and be added:

message 4: by Darcia (new)

Darcia Helle (darciahelle) My husband got me into Farmville. These games are far too distracting!

message 5: by Julie (new)

Julie | 31 comments I conceal everyone else's games. Otherwise I would never get to see what I signed up with Facebook for: the family pictures, the notes as to how everyone is doing.....

message 6: by Darcia (new)

Darcia Helle (darciahelle) Yes, it can get out of control. I hide all the game information. I have some friends and family who go nuts with Mafia Wars. If I didn't hide the game, I'd never see anything else!

message 7: by Julie (new)

Julie | 31 comments That's what I discovered.

message 8: by Susan (new)

Susan Gottfried (westofmars) | 68 comments I have never really played computer games, despite my dad's best attempts to change that about me. Computer time is writing time (although the past five years, regrettably, is also now marketing and networking time. I miss the days when I'd do nothing but write!)

Still, come find me on Facebook. Just look for West of Mars -- you'll find me as Susan Helene Gottfried and you can like my fan page at West of Mars (or like the pages for my two main characters, Trevor Wolff and Mitchell Voss, as well!).

The Facebook group I listed is where the clown story originated.

message 16: by Steven (new)

Steven (tbones) | 408 comments Well that's cool and the clown story really was totally cool. You writing would make some awesome short films. I think they should ask you to write for one of those Masters Of Horror DVDs. Have you seen those yet?
If you ever go any further with the clown or toy stuff let me know cause I really want to read more.

I think I've heard of the Masters Of Horror, but I've not seen any.
No clowns or toys at the moment; right now I'm writing fractured fairy tales.

Hi Sue, do you have a fanpage for Homecoming? I can't remember. And a little off-topic, your spotlight has been posted: http://www.examiner.com/x-37362-Canada-Sci-Fi-Examiner~y2010m4d20-An-authors-Homecoming

I had to fix a small problem when I first posted and I don't think I emailed you about it being live on Examiner.com.

message 21: by Sue (new)

Sue Bowling (sueannbowling) | 55 comments Yes, Homecoming has a page on facebook. It's at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Homecom... and I go quietly crazy trying to figure out how to link to it from my own page on facebook. My author website is http://www.sueannbowling.com

Timothy Dean (timothyjamesdean) | 32 comments Hi friends - fellow writers and readers! Nice to see Steven here... such a great supporter of Goodreads' authors, and of this site, among other friends.

It's hard to do all the things we authors are advised to do online - facebook, myspace, you tube, twitter, etc. etc., and as I'm into video, I have others as well, including yahoo video, dailymotion, blip.tv, and more! I love meeting authors and readers - it's part of what this is all about. BUT I have to work at it to balance this with writing, which does not like other mistresses, and family (ditto!).

All that said - please "like" my page, and I'll make a point of doing the same for everyone on this list (that I haven't already done).

http://www.facebook.com/TimothJamesDe...

PS I invite you as well to "friend" me on FB. The more writers and readers in my online friend group - especially people who have interesting things to say about their lives - the better! Long live the social network revolution. And I do hide all games from my feed - life itself is game enough for me!

I am definitely interested in reading the Fractured Fairy Tales. So far the work you've put up on here has me hooked on your writing style and I really want to read more.

message 37: by Joshua (new)

Joshua (JoshuaCaleb) | 62 comments Ah facebook. As computer/net savvy as I am, I cannot seem to get the hang of Zuck's privacy conundrum. I tried creating a fan page for my book series, but couldn't build anything interesting into it(FBML is completely foreign to me) I have a profile, but am considering deleting it after the continued privacy fiascoes. I enjoy using Twitter much more.

message 38: by Caroline (new)

Caroline Leavitt (carolineleavitt) | 20 comments Facebook is really important for writers--and rather than the fan page, I would suggest just making your regular page more interesting. I've found that people want to interact with YOU more than they want to go to a fan page and just see a series of messages. It's really worth it--tons of media people on FB, as well as readers. And you just need to check your privacy settings the way you ant them.

message 39: by Darcia (new)

Darcia Helle (darciahelle) Caroline, I agree. As a reader and a writer, I'm not fond of fan pages. I want readers to feel comfortable interacting with me and I think fan pages put a distance there, sort of like putting yourself on a pedastal. The privacy issue doesn't bug me at all. I want people to find me and I don't put anything on my Facebook page that I wouldn't want the world to see or know. The point of it, for me, is to be found. In reality, anything you put out there can be found by someone if they want it bad enough.

message 40: by Caroline (new)

Caroline Leavitt (carolineleavitt) | 20 comments Oh, I'm glad you agree! Me, too. I hate the fan pages, actually because it feels like an author trumpeting in your face. I'd rather hear an author excitedly talking about a great review than to see it just posted up there. Intimacy is what people want, I think and I absolutely agree with you about the distance. FB put up a community page for me without my permission (like a fan page) and THAT was upsetting. They wouldn't take it down, so I told everyone not to go there, and they have not.

message 41: by Joshua (new)

Joshua (JoshuaCaleb) | 62 comments Darcia, Caroline, you both make good points.

So, you basically make you regular page into a quasi-fan page, accepting any and all friend requests? Interesting idea, I suppose I didn't really put anything sensitive on there (I too was under the assumption that if it's on Facebook, it's public no matter what) Though it's kind of a sad state of affairs when our only option for such broad social media exposure is the privacy claptrap that is facebook. (though I admit, the recent changes are better.) But I still trust Zuckerberg about as far as I can throw Steve Jobs(something I've really been wanting to try :)

Ah well, maybe I'll keep it.

message 42: by A.F. (new)

A.F. (scribe77) | 142 comments If you are going to use your profile as a quasi-fan page be careful. In the past, Facebook has been known to suspend profiles with what they consider too much promotional content.

message 43: by Joshua (new)

Joshua (JoshuaCaleb) | 62 comments A. F. wrote: "If you are going to use your profile as a quasi-fan page be careful. In the past, Facebook has been known to suspend profiles with what they consider too much promotional content."

Can't you make some kind of question so not just anyone (bots/trolls) can be your friend? Like a question to do with your book so you know they are a "fan"?

message 44: by Caroline (new)

Caroline Leavitt (carolineleavitt) | 20 comments But that's my point, you don't want your FB to be too promotional because it turns fans off. Fans want to know more about you--the person, the writer they admire. Your website is where you get promotional. A FB page that was all promotion would turn me off to the author, and I'd never do that myself. I try to talk about all sorts of things so people get a wider image of me than just a novelist/critic.

message 45: by A.F. (new)

A.F. (scribe77) | 142 comments The reason I mentioned it was because an author got her account suspended for discussing her book on her profile. She didn't think she was being too promotional, but Facebook did.

And Joshua, I don't think you can limit fans like that on Facebook, but you can edit your settings to limit who can post. Some authors have created a group for their promotional needs.

I do understand the limitations of fanpages though, I've tried to be interactive on my fanpages, but it hasn't generated much interest.

message 47: by Ellen (new)

Ellen Maze (ellenmaze) | 37 comments AF SAID: The reason I mentioned it was because an author got her account suspended for discussing her book on her profile. She didn't think she was being too promotional, but Facebook did.

ELLEN SAID: oh my Goodness! I had no idea that this was a possibility! I promote my book all the time on my profile. YIKES! I'll cut back because I surely don't want to lose all my 1300 friends (most of them fans)!

I do have a fan page, so maybe I can start moving my readers over there and just promote there. I sure am glad you guys warned me! THANKS!

Here's my fan page - please join -- http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid...

And whoever's not my friend, I invite you to friend me on my profile: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid...

message 48: by Caroline (new)

Caroline Leavitt (carolineleavitt) | 20 comments That's so strange--I never knew that was a possibility. Maybe it was in the way she was promoting it?

message 49: by Caroline (new)

Caroline Leavitt (carolineleavitt) | 20 comments Karen, your link isn't working!

message 50: by Darcia (new)

Darcia Helle (darciahelle) I promote my books and contests on Facebook, though not obsessively. Every author I know does. I didn't know they would suspend your acccount for that. Maybe that person was spamming people or something? I do get constant email blasts from one particular author and that gets irritating.
