Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) Let's talk about Madonna.

I became a fan of hers in the early 80s, and I was a big fan of hers for more than 20 years. I'm not as in love with her now. I think her music quality has diminished.
But I still appreciate the body of work she's accumulated.

What are your favorites by Madonna?

Laurie (barksbooks) (barklesswagmore) Did you see the Glee episode? It was great. My kids kept asking why the Glee cast was dressed so weirdly in lace and bracelets and great big bows. They'd never seen such odd fashion sense. I didn't admit that I use to dress the same way and had hair that defied gravity.

Madonna's earliest stuff is my favorite, Like A Virgin, True Blue. She lost me somewhere around "Erotica" (was that it?) and went sort of techno-ish.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I didn't see that, BarkLess. The fact that they have a Madonna episode tells what an icon she is.

I have to say that I loved "Music" and "Ray of Light". They are two of her best albums, in my opinion. I didn't care for her last two albums that much, although "Hard Candy" was better than the one before that.

I think she needs to recharge her creative juices.

message 4: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) I'm with BarkLess about the Erotica period. I loved her during her Ray of Light phase. That's a favorite song and album of mine.

I was a teen in the '80s and love her earlier stuff and her groundbreaking videos on MTV. Once she got into the sex book I didn't like anything that came afterward.

Oh, and I hated that Dick Tracy and Evita crap.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I don't think Madonna is a strong actress. But we can't all be multi-talented.

message 6: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) Oh, it's not just her acting, all that music "inspired" by her crappy movies is what I was really grousing about.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) Oh, you don't like the music? I have an issue with some of her acting, personally. She doesn't have much range.

message 8: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) I'm not a fan of any kind of music inspired by a lackluster movie. Yeah, I have an issue with her acting, although she was pretty good in DSSusan.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I see what you mean.

I love her not as much now as then but I still do love her. The Erotica stuff is awesome, I love Bedtime Stories. The whole CD is great Take A Bow, Secert, and my favorite Human Nature. I can't speak about anything after Ray Of Light, Frozen being my fav. I sort of picked up some other women in music and she fell by the way. Her acting has never been good, in DSSusan she was sooooo bad. I've only seen bits and pieces of Evita but it seemed to me she was much better at it. Dick Tracy, and Shanghai Surprise should never have been made. One day i'm going to have to catch up with her music.

message 11: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) Aw, I thought she was good in DSS. But maybe I've got no taste. :-)

And that one where she takes up with some guy about to get married. She messes it up and for some reason they have a tiger. Can't think of the name of that pice of trash, but it was stinking baddddd.

message 13: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) LOL. Who's That Girl? That came out in my early twenties and I took a kid I was nannying for in the summer. Crappy movie.

All that damn giggling she done. Got on my last nerve. Like she was 14 or 15 instead 20 something. Please!

message 15: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) And that annoying Bronx accent or whatever it was. Like Betty Boop!

Didn't you just want to rip her throat out and scream "Stop sounding like that!" Oh it was annoying as hell!

message 17: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) Don't like her that much. Being a Christian, Like A Virgin never really worked for me.

message 18: by Dana * (new)

Dana * (queenofegypt) I think Madonna can still manage to put one of two great songs out per album. I appreciate her more now that Gaga is trying to take her place. What a characiture she is. Looking back to my younger days, I liked Madonnas shock value, but think Gaga is pretty lame and talentless. But it could be my age, maybe if I had been this old when I first saw Madonna, I would not have liked her either. But I think Madonna can sing, and Gaga cannot.

Anyway, I wish Madonna would lay off the horse steroids, seeing her manhands is pretty gross.

message 19: by Praj (new)

Praj Lady Gaga is a lame excuse for Madonna.Even with her overtly sexed up attire she cannot produce the effect that Madonna did with her Erotica.Yes Dana! Madonna should loosen up the muscles or she'll end up looking like a drag queen.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) Lady Gaga kind of gives me a weird vibe when I see her. Her face looks funny. I'm not trying to be mean in saying that.

I don't want to get into Madonna's morals. She has a different set of values from mine, and that never matched. But I could always appreciate her as being a talented singer, songwriter, and performer. Now, it seems as though she's lost her spark to me.

message 21: by Praj (new)

Praj Madonna should stop remixing her songs and tone down her drag queen shows.. her new video not that impressive!

message 22: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) But then again, the people I listen to don't have the same values either (Except Paramore). I just don't like Madonna. Probably due to the fact that I was born after her popularity died.

message 23: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) And yes Lady Gaga sucks eggs. And Her song meanings are so disturbing.

message 24: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) As a soon-to-be 45 year old (ouch!), I would never, ever tell a talented person not to write, sing, dance, whatever just because (s)he reached a certain age.

But I get creeped out with Madonna dressing and acting like she did at age 20,30, and even 40. She has hit the 50 mark and those "sexy" pictures with her and Justin Timberlake--who is young enough to be her child--just skeeved me out.
http://www.arbobo.fr/wp-content/uploa...

Madonna has an OK voice and I don't think she has ever done her own scores, but she is a good writer who can pen a catchy tune. My husband and I used to joke that her tunes were evil because they got inside our heads with their poppy sound and wouldn't leave for days!

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) You're right, she never did the music for her songs, Tressa. Initially, she always worked with Patrick Leonard for the music part. I think her vocal quality improved since her early days. I admire that she did try to work on that. It frustrates me how some people refuse to grow old gracefully. It's not a big deal. And believe me, I'm getting close to 40, so I understand how that feels to know you're getting older.

message 26: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) I think her vocal quality improved over the years, too. It was a little nasally and Betty Boopish in her early days.

No, growing old is not a big deal. But when I think of older women dressing and acting outrageously, I always think of an aged Betty Davis dressed in a baby doll dress with circles of rouge on her cheeks. You know what I'm talking about? Trying to hide her wrinkles with layers of makeup or whatever else trick she's got up her sleeve?

And that goes for men, too. For example, George Hamilton.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) Yes, it just gets really sad. When a person has so much plastic surgery that their face doesn't move, ever. It becomes really clownish.

message 28: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) I read recently where Hollywood is moving away from motionless faces. That's good. I mean, get your wrinkles blasted off, but stop tying your sagging face in a knot behind your head. It's just not natural.

Oh, I read in another article about how facial bones sink in as you age, so pulling the skin taut makes it look even funnier because it's not the sagging skin that is aging so much as your bones and muscles.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) It makes them look worse because they are fighting a natural process so hard.

I was channel surfing last night and I came on the infomercial for the 60's pop music. And the man doing it is Bobby Goldsboro, I don't remember the woman. Now this man was born in 1941, that would make him 69 years old, and old enough to know better. His face looked scary! It was so pulled back if a strong wind had built up and went past him, I do believe his face would have been pulled off. These people have got to know just because you have the mony to do something, doesn't mean you should!

Did you see it? It was horror personifield!
I was trying to find a recent picture of him but I can't find one.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) No. I think I'll pass, thanks. I don't need horror today. Too hot! :)

message 34: by Lori (new)

Lori (barfield) | 513 comments Mod
OMG how hot is it? Our high today was 84, but it's supposed to be 91 and climbing starting tomorrow. Going to the Zoo next Wednesday. It's going to be 87 and sunny. I pray it stays that way. My middle daughter only lives 20 minutes away from the zoo.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) It's in the low 90s, but has gotten into the 100s. Not fun!!!

message 36: by Lori (new)

Lori (barfield) | 513 comments Mod
Yeah, we'll get into the 100's before the end of August. Hell we stay up in the 90's during September, and October, it doesn't start cooling untill mid November.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I already wish it was fall.

Hell I just wish for a job! And then for fall.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I'll keep you in my thoughts. I have a couple of family members who are in the same situation. It's very frustrating to be there. Hugs!
