Finally got around to starting Essex! This first essay really did speak to me, the whole battle about using religious language within Unitarian Universalism.
The way out congregation does RE also popped into mind. From K-7 they are focused on learning about religion more so than spirituality. 8th grade is coming of age, and we've started doing HS as small group ministry. We start off with a religious base, a religious foundation, then move to deepening spirituality. I think this model is going to work, but only time will tell on that front.
The natural time to start really getting into spiritual depth, at least to me, is in high school. Teens start to go through all kinds of changes, and as they do, they start to question everything, including their beliefs.

Our first essay was the Rev. Dr. Barry Andrews's "Educating for Faith" -- what truths did you find in these pages?
If you've had a chance to look at any of the Tapestry of Faith curricula, would you say that they meet his criteria for faith development?
What else spoke to you?
(Up next are the essays of the Revs Susan Davison Archer and Marjorie Bowens-Wheatley.)
