Hi there all, so I'm thinking of doing something a little bit different for this one. I want to do two group reads - one historical fiction and one any genre. Neither is mandatory, but I think that it would be fun to do something a little different.

So, please list your nominations here. Please remember to link to the title, and to list the author as well as why you'd like to read it. You can nominate 1 book from each category.

Thanks!

Edit to add: Nominations will be open until Saturday May 22nd, and then we'll vote.

So, here are my nominations to get the ball rolling. :)

HF: The Beekeeper's Apprentice by Laurie R King. I recently read "A Study in Scarlet" (the first Sherlock Holmes story) and this book was recommended to me. It looks very interesting, and I love me some Victorian era mysteries. :)

Any genre: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson because it looks really interesting, and has been recommended to me numerous times. :)

LemonLinda (lwilliamson0423) | 626 comments HF: I really want to read The Birth of Venus by Sarah Dunant. Several friends that have quite similar tastes to mine have recommended this one to me.

Any genre: YA - The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Again, very highly recommended by lots of friends and I want to read this series. First, The Hunger Games in June, then in July, Catching Fire and then in August, Mockingjay, when it is first released.

I loved The Hunger Games and Catching Fire. They are great books. :)

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3122 comments I own the Hunger Games so I vote for that one.

You'll have to vote in the poll Jayme... Meanwhile do you want to add any nominations?

message 7: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments HF: To Shield the Queen by Fiona Buckley. This one seems interesting because it combines HF with mystery so it's a little different than other books we've read in the group. Plus I own it and it will help me lessen my owned TBR mountain. :-)

Any Genre: Soulless by Gail Carriger. This falls in the genre of steampunk, which is one not many people have been exposed too or heard of. Here is the wiki explaining the genre- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steampunk
A couple of GR friends have read this one and highly enjoyed it. Plus, I've seen it recommended in other groups. Help me be in the in-crowd and vote for this one. :D

What? Keep my sanity? :P

(Oh poo, I'm such a bad example.)

message 29: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) How about:

HF: Aztec by Gary Jennings. Someone nominated this awhile back and I became interested in the blurb. Plus, a good friend recommended it. It looks epic and is supposed to have some sex in it.

Any genre: The Lions of al-Rassan by Guy Gavriel Kay. Historical fantasy, so it's not all that far off the theme. Kay's books are fantastic and this is supposed to be one of his better ones.

Chris, you're my kind of man. lol.

message 31: by Shomeret (new)

Shomeret | 206 comments I want to re-nominate Portrait of an Unknown Woman by Vanora Bennett as my HF nomination.

For my non-HF nomination, I want to nominate Pastwatch: The Redemption of Christopher Columbus by Orson Scott Card. It's a time travel novel that deals with history in a very interesting way.

message 32: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) Chris knows us too well :P

message 33: by Felina (new)

Felina Stop stop. Way to many good books that I want to read being nominated. Chris wins with Lions. I've wanted to read that forever!!

message 34: by Gina (new)

Gina I went to the poll to vote but didn't see these books? Am I looking in the wrong place?

message 35: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments We're still nominating Gina. Becky will let you know when it's time to vote. Would you like to nominate something?

message 36: by Gina (new)

Gina Yes, I would love to nominate Dark Places by Gillian Flynn. There is so much buzz about it. It seems to be a dark mystery. For my HF nomination, definitely Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks. I have had this book for a year and am dying to read it. The reviews are great!

message 37: by Julie (new)

Julie (readerjules) Ooh, I want to read Year of Wonders too

message 38: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments Years of Wonder was great! It was a sad story, but the writing was beautiful.

message 39: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 3034 comments Mod
Good choices Gina, I've been eyeing Gillian FLynn's books for a while. :)

message 43: by Felina (new)

Felina Heather wrote: "I have absolutely no clue what I'll end up voting for this round. There are usually a couple that I'll end up leaning toward, but this round, my gosh every one of them sounds good!"

Same here.

message 44: by Julie (new)

Julie (readerjules) Ok, where's the poll? It's not up yet and I want to vote! :-)

message 45: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 3034 comments Mod
LOL Sorry... I guess I was hoping that we'd actually get some more nominations. I'll put it up right now.

message 46: by Julie (new)

Julie (readerjules) Well phooey....both my votes came in second.

message 47: by LemonLinda (new)

LemonLinda (lwilliamson0423) | 626 comments I have already read The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo earlier this year and enjoyed it. I was not as enthralled as a lot of people have been, but then I have read that the story improves even more with the next two books in the series which I plan to get to sometime soon.

message 48: by Maude (new)

Maude | 732 comments I am so looking forward to reading I, Claudius! I, too, have read The GWTDT and am looking forward to discussing it also.
