I loved Beverly Cleary, too! And I had a tendency to read books featuring animals! My oldest son seems to be following in my footsteps, too, as he usually won't read a book unless it has an animal in it!! And I can't wait to see the Beezus and Ramona movie this summer; I'll probably go with my two younger sisters as we all read her books!

The Luckiest Girl was my very favorite of Cleary's, and I read it to tatters, but I liked everything of hers I could find. Over and over...
I loved Beverly Cleary, but the mouse books were definitely my favorite. Heather, like you, my favorite books were those with animal characters. One of my other favorites was Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.
Fans here, too, of Cleary beyond Ramona (though she is special). The cat in "Socks" doesn't talk but it's still a great story. And Lynne Reid Banks' "I, Houdini" has a great little talking animal.
