Kandice | 4388 comments I may be a stickler, but that does NOT strike me a King cover. Of course I will buy it and read it, but that cover...I don't like it.

Michael Stewart (michaelfstewart) | 19 comments I agree Kandice, don't see that as a King cover either. Funny, clicking on the cover brings up Shimmer by Morrell. (not recommended) IMO

message 4: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) | 64 comments That is a pretty interesting cover. I like it, but that doesn't say Stephen King to me. I wonder what the deal is...

message 5: by Kandice (last edited May 19, 2010 08:24AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kandice | 4388 comments Oh, I like it, it's just that he's never had an actual photograph on any of his covers at first release before. I don't even know if there are any later editions with actual photos on the cover. They are always abstract, raised, or drawings. That's the sort of cover I associate with him. It's a beautiful shot, just not...King-ish.

*shrugs*

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I don't really like it. I don't get it, and it looks unbalanced to me. *shrug*

Kandice | 4388 comments As far as unbalnaced goes...that might be what they were going for:D Still don't like it.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Yeah, probably. But it doesn't even make sense to me. I read some of the little blurbs about the stories, and that cover doesn't... mesh.

Adam Smith (chaos624) | 19 comments I don't mind it, the only covers I get out here in Australia these days are obnoxious single colour with title covers. I've taken to only buying when I can get a better cover.

message 10: by Mary (new) - rated it 4 stars

Mary (madamefifi) I don't care about the cover, I'm just happy to see something new from Uncle Stevie! Yay!

message 11: by Lori (new)

Lori (barfield) Maybe it has to do with one of the stories in the book. Either way I kind of like it.

message 12: by Bonita (new)

Bonita (NMBonita) I don't like the cover, but it won't stop me from being first in line for the book :)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) | 665 comments It won't stop me either, but it does not work for me! Definitely a bad idea! :\

Kandice | 4388 comments Of course. First thing I said was that I'd buy it the day it came out, I'm just happy you can't actually see the covers when they are shelved.

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) | 665 comments I would just love the person who made that decision to know.....bad idea.....doesn't work.....not a "Stephen King" book cover!

Felina It strikes me as very Twilight-y, which makes me sad. But I'll still read it, of course. :P

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Felina wrote: "It strikes me as very Twilight-y, which makes me sad. But I'll still read it, of course. :P"

YES! That's what it is. It's like the person is trying to mold themself into a flower with their arm as a stem, and with the black background, that's exactly what it feels like.

Felina They are trying to appeal to a different market. That fine I guess but I think they should be more concerned with their current fan base. Boo Stephanie Meyer...you ruin everything!

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) Bah there's been pretentious arty poses on books for years before Meyer's books, hell that's what her's are based on folks. Also keep in mind even the biggest authors don't get to choose the cover art on their books so don't hold it against the book or the author.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Yes, Amanda, that's true... but this cover bothered me for a reason I just couldn't put my finger on, and Felina said exactly what it was.

And I know that authors don't get to choose their covers, but that fact doesn't mean I have to like them any better. :)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) But I might add that it's true that Meyer's covers have spawned a new trend in book cover art. Publishers are trying to capitalize on the popularity of her books.

For example:
The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan
Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë

And these are two that I know of just off the top of my head. *shrug*

LOL!!! I guess I can fathom that the publisher might want to appeal to Meyerites. (Maybe there's a better word for Meyer fans?)

oh they already came up an especially stupid one all on their own "twerds".

Kandice | 4388 comments At the risk of needing to duck spitballs or something, I devoured the Twilight books, knowing all the while the actual writing was crap. Meyer knows a good story, she just didn't know how to tell it in a professional way. The Host is her as a "better" writer because of her experiences, and practice with Twilight. I think she shows promise. You can't teach someone to draw up a story in the same way you can teach the mechanics of writing.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I thought they were Twi-hards? LOL

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) Becky wrote: "I thought they were Twi-hards? LOL"

both actually its like trekkies and trekkers.

You'll not get any spitballs from me Kandice. You have every right to like what you like. I've seen other authors do the same as you describe so I can believe it. Having seen both of the first two films (my sister is a closet fan) I can see where you're coming from especially with the author's eye view on the matter.

Felina No worries Kandice. As far as my book loving circle of friends is concerned I am out numbered by Twilight fans. If I already didn't hate the romance genre then the poor writing probably wouldn't have bothered me that much either. It was just a fatal mix for me. I hate the books not the readers. So Twilight sisters...live long and prosper. *goes to iron her 'Team Harry' t-shirt*

lol I too am a Potter fan Felina

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I read and enjoyed the Twilight books... they were addicting - but as K said, they weren't literary genius or anything.

But there will never, NEVER, EVER come a day when I wouldn't be Team Harry (or rather Team Ron ♥). Harry Potter IS literary genius.

Kandice | 4388 comments *clears throat* BTW I adore Star Trek and don't care if you call me a Trekker or a Trekkie. I still have the toys from when I was a child and will be James Kirk's girl until the day I die.

Okay, got that out of my system.

Felina Ha ha

*Team Harry group hug*

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Should we do one of those super-awesome all-hands-in-the-middle team high-fives?

GOOOOOOOOOOO TEAM HARRY!!!! :D

Kandice | 4388 comments GOOOOOOOOOOO TEAM HARRY!!!! :D

I think I agree with you on that. I'm reading them too and I appreciate the story. I just get so disgruntled with her inability to tell the story that I forever want to toss the books to the floor Which is one of two reasons I read them on my Kindle. First, no throwing. 2nd, no one knows I'm reading them. hee hee hee ain't I a stinker?!

Oooooo yet another reason for me to adore you Kandice.

Kandice | 4388 comments No, Leslie, you're not! I put book covers over them as I read for the same reason;)

100% agree. I only read books I don't want to admit to on my kindle. Also good for mega bricks...um...Under the Dome.

I'm a Trek fan too :D Fav captain is Picard. Other fav characters include Data, Spock,Scottie,Troy, and Tasha Yar.

I'm also an X-phile and Buffy fan partial to Willow, Spike and Xander. :D

Felina Yay Buffy!! I loved Spike much better than Angel. Angel was way to moody. Buck up buddy!

I like Supernatural as well.

I like the vibe in this thread.

Yay for Buffy! Though for me it wasn't Angel or Spike, it was Oz. I was really sad he didn't appear at all in the later seasons (though I think he came back in the comics).

Yay for SPN! Don't even get me started. Too many hotties right there (though I seem to have a thing for guys named Chuck, and I'm seriously not kidding :D)

Lori (barfield) Has anyone preordered this book?

message 46: by Jeff (new) - added it

Jeff | 32 comments No listing for the Kindle edition of the book on Amazon yet. I hope it's not another one where they don't release it until a few months after the DTB version is released (but I think it will be :( )

Ok, I'm feeling pretty stupid right now...but what does DTB stand for?

"Dead Tree Book". Sorry, I should have spelled that out. It's commonly used in the Kindle forums to refer to the "paper" version of a book vs. the eBook. :)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) | 665 comments Gotcha. Thanks, I should probably know that, though. What bugged me is that with Blockade Billy...first I treated myself to a first edition from Cemetary Dance. I never do this but it wasn't much so I did it. Then I got myself the Kindle version so I didn't have to open the other one and I could keep it nice. But then I found out that the version available in the stores would have an additional story that I had never read. So, then I have to buy that one as well. I have 3 versions of Blockade Billy now! lol What a pain in the butt!

I have the Kindle version and it ticks me off that it doesn't have Mortality. I'm thinking about getting it from the library just so I can read Mortality.
