Lee Modesitt is like a mentor, though neither of us knew it until we met last year. We met at SpoCon where we conducted panels on writing.

I've read the Recluce Saga and the Soprano Sorceress Series back in my college days. I had no idea that they had such an influence on my writing. Ah, the things we forget as time goes on. I digress. Let's get back to our meeting.

Sitting next to Lee, for Mr. Moddesitt insisted that I call him by his first name, was a bit intimidating. The way in which he carries himself, his vocabulary, everything about him speaks of his brilliant mind. I felt a bit like a country bumpkin walking in with horse dung still on my shoes. Really. I'm serious!

I am a college dropout - good grades but life got in the way: that's another story though. Lee has not only graduated from college, but he taught in residency for many years. He's done everything from the humble lifeguard to the renowned research scientist.

Not only his his work brilliant, but as a man he is humble and kind. Through our conversations I gleaned a few morsels of wisdom concerning his work.

When Lee put out his first book, he broke a huge barrier. Lee wrote in First Person: that means from the "I" prospective instead of the "Them." I had forgotten that. (I also write in first)

Lee also informed me that his Soprano Sorceress books broke another rule: 1st person, Present tense. The norm at the time was 3rd person past tense. Again I was shocked. I write in 1st/present too! And Soprano is one of my favorite series! BTW: Did you know his beautiful wife was his inspiration for this series? She is a soprano opera singer.

Until we met, I had no idea we had so much in common. I had completely forgotten about the tense in his books.

Lord willing, I will be on some more panels with Lee this summer. We are scheduled at Fandemonium to do panels together. I hope to continue leaning more about this wonderful man. My memory for facts isn't my strong suit - I am a fiction writer after all. Maybe I'll bring a notepad...

Oooo - on second thought, maybe not. Maybe I'll see if he'd like to join us for a discussion of his work and life... If our group is a respectable size, perhaps he'll take the time to say, "Howdy."

Have you met Lee? Know any interesting Modesitt facts. Please share!

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I've never met him, although we've chatted in email a few times over the decades. Doesn't he have a slew of kids?

That is one topic we have yet to broach. I'll have to ask him this summer. Do you know if he's good at stuff online? Does he do forum chats?

Tom (tomgendron) | 2 comments I am building a cabin in Utah, one weekend at a time. It's about 50 miles from Cedar City. I would love to meet him sometime. Does anyone know of any book signings or readings he may do around there?

Only the event listed here: the convention at Saltlake. There will be both a signing and a reading there.
