Laurel I've recently begun to focus more on shorter novels or novellas. I genuinely enjoy the variety in styles, from crisp page turners to a more in depth character study. I also sincerely love sitting down and reading an entire book in one sitting. It all develops in front of you - no interuptions to pull me from the magic of the story!

I've recently read Blockade Billy by Stephen King, Little Fuzzy by H. Piper Beam, The God's Engines by John Scalzi. Can anyone recommend some more I should look into?

Jim (jimmaclachlan) "Once there was a Giant" by Keith Laumer

"And Call Me Conrad" by Roger Zelazny, later expanded into "This Immortal". Actually he has several books/stories like that.

Those are off the top of my head. I agree with you. They can be very enjoyable. More developed than a short story, but fairly quick, tight & decisive.

For short stories the best volumes would be the Legends series edited by Robert Silverberg. Authors seem to write short stories for that series which are later expanded, of which Robert Jordan and Neil Gaiman are good examples.

Another book of short stories I enjoyed was Emerald Magic: Great Tales of Irish Fantasy by Andrew M. Greeley.

A.F. (scribe77) I also recommend the Legends series; they're great books.

Annika Howells (annikahowells) I'm not usually drawn to short stories. I did enjoy The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter though. I'd like to read the rest of the stories in the collection I had, but I've somehow lost the book!
