We won't be reading our first book for maybe a month or two, but I want to get opinions on what we should read. I'm thinking that we'll start in June or July. Any recommendations?

Callie (allicay) | 18 comments I have absolutely no idea. But lets read something really good!
And it would be great if we could read something they have at the library or that somebody has an extra copy of...Salem Library's selection is really limited but if Payson library has more than one copy and somebody could check it out for me or something

message 3: by Heather (new)

Heather | 11 comments Ya that would be good. Maybe each book we read will be different so then they are not all the same genre.... I don't know what books though... hmmmm.... I get back to ya'll

Lindsey | 13 comments If we want to do classics Little Women or Eight Cousins (my favorite by her is actually the sequel to this book, called Rose in Bloom) by Luisa May Alcott are really good. Or Anne of Green Gables is good too.

I actually started reading Eight Cousins the other day. I think we should start with a pretty short book, just to get started.

Callie (allicay) | 18 comments that sounds good to me ;)

Reading a smaller book? I'm thinking we should start with authors first. What authors are you guys interested in?

Ummm let me think...

Lindsey | 13 comments ... I went and looked some up. What about the Little House books By Laura Ingalls Wilder, Frances Hodgson Burnett ( A Little Princess is my favorite but I really like Little Lord Fauntleroy as well), or Old Yeller is good too. Ooh or what about The Wizard of Oz or ALice in Wonderland? I havn't read either of those. I know you said authors specifically, sorry, I am just thinking mostly of books that I know of ( :... We could do a C.S. Lewis. Anne of Green Gables isn't long also. Havn't read 1984 or Animal Farm either.Madeleine L'Engle is good she wrote the series that starts with A Wrinkle in Time. (; I got lots of suggestion ( :

I think we should read Alice in Wonderland. I've been wanting to read it and I started it once but things have been crazy. Now that it's summer I'd really like to. I like the Little House suggestion, but I don't know that we should get into a lot of series. I think I'll make a poll for it.

message 11: by Callie (new)

Callie (allicay) | 18 comments well Alice in Wonderland is my favorite book, but if you want to start w/ a shorter one, that's not the one to pick. I'm good with anything though. Its good to pick books we know of, because we know they are a)not a waste of time and b)not offensive, or else we probably wouldn't suggest them. But i think it is also good to find new ones and broaden our scopes instead of just reading books that we know we like already

Alas, tis true. You are so very smart, Callie. I still think we should read Alice in Wonderland, though:) Would you suggest that, Callie?

yes i would suggest it very highly

Alright, it's decided then I suppose. I'll put it on!

message 15: by Heather (new)

Heather | 11 comments Okay sounds good to me!

message 16: by Heather (new)

Heather | 11 comments Since we are reading Alice in Wonderland I think a fun book to read would be The looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor. You may all be thinking that sounds ridiculous, I did too. Until I actually read the book. It is a different version of what happened in Alice in Wonderland. I loved this book and think it would be a good book to read after Alice in Wonderland. Just suggestion.

 Hope | 40 comments Mod
Huh, interesting. We'll have a poll for the next book and that can be on it.

message 18: by Heather (new)

Heather | 11 comments Haha ok. Well okay anyways some books by Ann Rinaldi look really good. I have read one of her books and I instantly fell in love with her writing. I read the book Hang a thousand trees with ribbons. She writes really good books but I am not sure they are the kind of books we would want to read, cause... they are obviously not classics but they are very good.

 Hope | 40 comments Mod
That's just mostly what we read, other books are good, too. I like that title. Maybe I should read it.

message 20: by Heather (new)

Heather | 11 comments I highly recommend it.

message 21: by Callie (new)

Callie (allicay) | 18 comments is there a certain amount we are supposed to read each week? and also are we reading just Alice in Wonderland, or Through the Looking Glass as well? i will be at girls camp the week we start so i may be a little behind, but i will try ;)

message 22: by Hope (new)

 Hope | 40 comments Mod
No, you can read it at the speed you like, but I would recommend reading a few chapters a week just to stay on top with conversation. Through the Looking Glass is included in this read. Okay, you can start early if you want.

message 23: by Callie (last edited Jun 07, 2010 06:18PM) (new)

Callie (allicay) | 18 comments kay cool. well i am not the boss here, but i personally think it would be good if we said "try to get to chapter _ this week" because people have their own opinions of what "a few" means. and i do think its okay for people to get ahead or behind, but it would be good for us to try to stay about in the same place so people aren't saying stuff that happens past what others have read

message 24: by Hope (new)

 Hope | 40 comments Mod
That's true. Good idea, Callie! Well, I'm not sure how long the chapters are so we'll have to see when we start it.

Lindsey | 13 comments Heather wrote: "Since we are reading Alice in Wonderland I think a fun book to read would be The looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor. You may all be thinking that sounds ridiculous, I did too. Until I actually read..."

So is the Looking Glass Wars like a funny version or a more modren version or what? I might just read it on my own since we probably will not end up reading it as a group. And it is appropriate right?

And also a question... Alice and Wonderland is the first book right? And then Through the Looking Glass? Sorry kind of a dumb question...

I think Alice in Wonderland is a great book to start on! I havn't gotten around to reading it so this will give me the chance. ( : Hey I don't know if you will like this suggestion, but we could just discuss it after we read it and you could give evryone like a month or whatever to read it and then we would discuss it. Or we could discuss it by chapter. Either way :)

message 26: by Heather (new)

Heather | 11 comments The looking glass wars is supposedly the "true" story of Alice in wonderland. I really enjoyed the book and highly recommend it. It is the first book in the series, I only read the first book though, but I enjoyed the book and would like to read the rest. If it would help you I usually don't like fantasy books but I really liked this book.

message 27: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 13 comments Okay thanks! And it dosn't have anything inappropriate in it?

message 28: by Heather (new)

Heather | 11 comments Oh and I forgot to tell you it is a totally appropriate book, a little romance but hardly any, and I don't think it swore at all.

message 29: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 13 comments OK great!

I like that idea. I think we'll just give everyone a month to read it and then we can discuss it. Does anyone oppose?

message 31: by Callie (new)

Callie (allicay) | 18 comments nope i think that's a great idea.

Alright, then how about until July 14. Everyone good with that?

message 33: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 13 comments Yeah I think so, but I know I'm going out of town about that time too...

message 34: by Hope (new)

 Hope | 40 comments Mod
You can really start and finish whenever you want, it's just supposed to be in that time frame. It isn't even a requirement to read it.

Just got the book today. I'm happy with the date. I have a few books waiting to be read but I'll squeeze this one in.
