Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9544 comments Okay, it's been awhile, but I've gathered up the nerve to post another GR feedback request, and I'd love it if anyone so inclined would go over there and add a comment of support, if you agree. Here's the link: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/3...

Basically, I'm requesting a refinement of the "mark unread" feature, one where you can open a topic with too many posts to read in one setting, read a few of the posts, and only have the ones you've read be marked read. Right now, in that scenario, no matter if you read 1 posts or 101, they all are marked read when you leave the topic and you have no way to pick up where you left off except to remember the topic name and the number of the post you last read.

Thanks!

Ann (annrumsey) | 17099 comments LOL, Carol - I am marking this post and thread unread so I can come back to it. ;)

Shomeret | 1505 comments I think this would be difficult for GR. They would need to make every post markable read or unread. It would be a huge change for the database and lots of work. I'd like to see it, but I don't think we can expect it any time soon. It will rank with improving search--another important and pervasive change that would be difficult to do.

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9544 comments Shom, you may be right, in which case they will have a record of level of importance to users by the response of other GR-ers.

Ann (annrumsey) | 17099 comments I'll clean this up to be more generic and post it to your suggestion thread too Carol! I agree with Shomeret, the alternative seems like it would be cumbersome to systemically hold that level of detail and the reader would have to make some sort of notation next to posts that were read vs. those that were not if it were to work.
I wonder if there could be other alternative solutions to your dilemma Carol - a dilemma that I share. I think mine is similar.
I will 'read' a thread here on this group easily because, of 100+ posts, I have kept up with them daily and have only a few to catch up.
Even so, sometimes to find again quickly a thread I have read, when there are no new posts to alert me to the location isn't always easy.
Not so hard eventually on this group where I am familiar with the layout, but almost impossible on a group where the layout of threads groupings by topic is more obscure. And for another group with a thread of over 100+ posts I am unlikely to read an entire thread in one sitting, but once I read one, I am marked as all read. Goodreads attempts to help with the notification system letting us know if we choose, that someone has added a post, but even then you don't know where you actually stopped reading.
One alternative would be a way to mark posts like we do the progress in a book "I am on page ___" turns to I am on post #___" or
I doubt you would like my suggestion of being able to read chronologically, not threaded as an option ;) but I liken it to Facebook where I start at the top of my wall with the latest post and then work my way backwards to a point where I either give up or reach the time range I had covered the last time I checked all of the posts.

BarryP (barrypz) | 3520 comments I guess I missed the whole argument. I marked it "read".

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9544 comments Ann, thanks for your response. I'm not sure I see any workarounds that are easy. I guess I will take to noting the # where I left off in a topic. It doesn't happen here, where I keep up pretty well and the unread posts notification is sufficient. I need this more in groups where I don't check in so often, or new groups that I join.
Reading chronologically wouldn't be much better, where if my intention is to read everything I'd still have to note the date where I left off so i could come back and pick up later.

And since Barry is marking the whole topic "read" I will take the opportunity to say that he is a Mr. Smartypants.

But new posts keep showing up. There are worse things I can be called than "smartypants".
I did manage over 1500 pages of reading on line at Disney. Hate to have unproductive time.

Do you mean while you were waiting in lines?

BarryP (barrypz) | 3520 comments Yup, in line, not a minute wasted.
