message 1: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) Me, I personally write fantasy: high fantasy, urban fantasy, historical fantasy... but I'm currently working on 2 dystopians

message 2: by I am Bastet (new)

I am Bastet | 16 comments I write anything and everything fantasy! My preference is urban (but sometimes urban set in another world) but I've tried writing it all--even a horror fantasy.

message 3: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) Yay fantasy :D

message 4: by Rebekah Faith (new)

Rebekah Faith (musicalradiance) I'm thinking of expanding on a short story i wrote a couple years ago. Not sure where it'll take me, but I AM sure that is my idea and I didn't steal it from anyone. :) hahaa.
It's sorta a real-life fantasy, I haven't looked back at it in depth, but enough that I can expand, and be more descriptive.

Do IO seem like I'm sorta rambling on and on about nothing?

message 5: by Hope (new)

Hope (heyhopeful) I'm working on some..
-Historical(ish) fiction.
-Some fantasy/time travel.
-Modern-day.
-Dystopian.

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) Jillian -always aspiring- wrote: "Fantasy (paranormal/supernatural, dystopian, sci-fi, horror, etc.) is my main focus. :)

If I wrote about real life, I think my writing would be boring. o.o Most of the books I love are fantasie..."

I mostly read fantasy too! I don't think I could ever write "realistic fiction" - just don't have that particular skill!

message 7: by ★ Jess (last edited May 30, 2010 01:31AM) (new)

★ Jess Fantasy!
Who dosent enjoy it? The limits are endless.

I write urban fantasies and horror mostly.
Well, not really Stephan King like horror, but...creepy, skin crawling horror.

Recently though, friends and my parents are saying im getting really good at "fantastic endings and twists"

message 8: by Hope (new)

Hope (heyhopeful) I've let my mum read some of my stories, and she's encouraging, but it's harder for me to keep in the mood of the story when I'm worried about what other people will like. A long time ago I was letting a friend read one of my stories, and she said something about it being "dry" and so I put in some humor, but looking back it didn't seem to fit at all. So I just try to ignore outside influences and do my thing. :) So I'm shy of showing anything to anyone until the final draft. xD

hahaha I'm incredibly neurotic about my stories. Like, NO ONE reads them until I'm absolutely finished. I take my inspiration from Charles Dickens, who kept his manuscripts in a lock-box because he didn't want anybody to see them. :P That's why I haven't posted any of my writing on goodreads

message 10: by Megan (new)

Megan (megandarle) | 26 comments i like to write about drama/ action/ adventure. probably because thats what i like to watch the most

Skyelark *Incredimazing* Charlie Logan (skyelarkcharlielogan) | 7 comments I really like to write science fiction and fantasy. Idk, I just like the imagination part of it. Anything can happen, really. :)

The only writing on GOODREADS of mine, was a fan fic i wrote for the very purpose of posting it here, and a story i just want to share with every one and anyone.
But i dont show a lot of writing to people. Just short stories that are done, or hooks.
My main one-soooo many people have asked to read it, and ive constantly denied them :P

message 13: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) I personally think that's smart :P
For me, it's my story until I'm finished and ready to edit/revise, then I'll probably get together a critique group...but I'm also paranoid about my stuff getting out--stupid, right?

message 14: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess me too!!!

I have a bucket load of stories-and none of them up here (except for the two i wrote for that purpose)

I was talking to Amber about short story collection, she wanted to see-so i sent one or two to her.

But yeah, i get paranoid too.
When i finish my story, i'll probably hand a few manuscripts to people.

message 15: by Megan (new)

Megan (megandarle) | 26 comments i start to write a story but then i get stuck major time. then while i'm stuck i start to get an idea for a new story and i start writing about that. so now i have about 3 stories all in progress.

message 16: by Fhal (new)

Fhal (donellys) | 33 comments I have lots of story plots inside my head but I can't seem to find time and write them. I write fan fiction and I have several stories written in notebooks and a couple published in fanfiction.net

I like writing my own little stories from books I love and the only stories that I had the courage of putting on the internet was about Twilight. I would hopefully move to more books and write something non-Twilight because I don't feel comfortable just remaining in one area.

I recommend the following sites if you want your works published and if you guys want to hear some reviews about your work :D

Fan fiction: www.fanfiction.net
Fan Press [for literary works:] : www.fictionpress.com

Take Care!

Diana This is the beginning of one of my stories:

http://www.goodreads.com/story/show/5...

The rest of my stories aren't online.

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

I write anything, any type of creative writing for school I jump at, but otherwise I'm kind of an in-the-closet writer. Mainly because I don't want ppl talking about it to me all the time, especially if they don't like it. Maybe thts y I like the internet so much..
Like I said, I write anything, but mostly the stuff I have on here has kind of young adult romance. That I definitely would never show anybody in real life! Lol

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

Um, I've noticed that I have the tendecy to always involve supernatural in my stories... But I also tend to mix romance in. I mostly like to create complex and realistic CAHARACTERS. Don't like too complex stories... In the end I mess the story up myself!

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

*CHARACTERS

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

Haha i totally get that! I can make totally messed up characters but if its too complex of a plot even i get lost!

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

i know! so i try to keep things simple (my characters may slap me some day for their past XD)

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

Haha ya id always do that 'talk to your character' game or whatever in other groups with the mc from my old story and it always ended in tears and i hate yous...

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

ouch! you're characters are harsh!

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

Well wouldnt u do that too if ur bf died? Lol i deserved it

message 26: by Susan (new)

Susan Quinn (susan_kaye_quinn) | 7 comments Wow! Looks like lots of great fantasy, SF, and post-apocalyptic writing going on here!

I have a young adult love story coming out soon, a middle grade science fiction novel I'm polishing up to start shopping around, and a young adult paranormal book that I need to finish (just a few more chapters to go). And another couple stories dancing around in my head, waiting their turn. :)

message 27: by Poindextεrr. (last edited Jun 07, 2010 02:53PM) (new)

Poindextεrr. (carpe_diem) | 24 comments I write a lot of poetry.

I especially enjoy the simplicity & sweetness of couplets-- they're short and to the point, which I really enjoy. They also have that tinge of mystery in which you can apply the message of the poem to almost any aspect of life.

Most of my poems express my views on life, religion, (not really politics), and many, many other things. They can be a bit depressing at times, but usually I try and teach a lesson or two.

:)

message 28: by Arch (new)

Arch | 90 comments I write contemporary romance. I like to show romance in my stories. I know that a lot of books are classified as romance, but you don't really see the romance. Yes, you get a HEA, but what about the candle light dinners? The fun times, such as the hero and heorine playing a game or either cooking for the other? Give me more romance.

Very cool, Susan! So do you already have a publisher for your first story?

message 30: by Jess (new)

Jess | 104 comments The two main books I'm working on are contemporary fantasy and a post-apocalyptic.

message 31: by Natalie (new)

Natalie (natalierenae) I wrote quite a bit in high school, but then the first year of two of college, I stopped because I got frustrated with it. At the moment, I've made the resolution to try and start up again. I've got about three or four stories in the works, but a LOT of editing needs to be done. I have no trouble coming up with ideas, and I can usually figure out the beginning and the ending...it's always the middle that gets me! Lol. Hopefully devoting more time to writing will help me out with that.

The story I'm working on the most right now is a dystopian.

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

@ Catherine: ick. killed bf? that's a BAD move if you plan on confronting your characters...

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes I never really had a chance lol! But it was necessary, I think. Idk honestly i havent read it in so long i cant remember! Lol

message 34: by Ayunda (new)

Ayunda (ayundabs) Hi guys!
I mostly write short stories, but I'm working on a novel right now. Mostly my stories are about normal everyday things, like school, friends and stuff.
Look at my writing here: http://www.goodreads.com/story/list/2...

message 35: by Jamie (new)

Jamie (jamie1elizabeth) I like to write long stories....but...I tend to not finish them....it stinks cause I want to...but I usually get too frustrated.....but....my writing is usually dark and fantasy like...or thrilling....or horror.....things like that.......I do write happy things but not as much....if someone asks me to I will though. I can write anything from realistic fiction to what I said earlier...what I can't write it non-fiction documentary stuff...like reports and stuff like that....I hate it.....but if it's creative....I can do it. I have no trouble with ideas...but I do frustrate myself with wording....I want it to be perfect...although somehow...I've give my mother nightmares after telling her parts of my stories....I wonder.....maybe it's just her.

What makes you say that?

message 37: by Jess (new)

Jess | 104 comments Well, I dunno if you MAKE it scary per se, but your ideas should have horror elements. Like, you shouldn't throw in stuff to make it scarier, the story itself needs to be scary. So your idea might just be scary enough. Just go for it!

message 38: by J.m. (new)

J.m. (groovywriter) | 2 comments I write genre-busters dealing with the reality that underlies our 3-D reality. One of my latest readers described my work as "mystical," though I try my best to make the mystical stuff secondary to the thrills and chills. To describe my writing, I've used the comparison: "What if Stephen King wrote Left Behind?" Take a religious subject that fascinates many readers, then add some completely secular twists.

Good luck! I'm not easily scared either, but apparently some of the books I read are horror. I disagree, so just make the thriller good to you, and worry about genre later.
That sounds cool J.m.!

★ Jess The way you word writing is so important!

Last year i wrote a short story, which was....meh. Decent.
Then i edited it, changed the wording, and i even gave my self spine-tingles.

I totally agree! Most of the time my stories are so wordy, that in revision I have to be more succinct. The difference is unbelievable.

My descriptions are that way, but my action and the actual plot over explain everything. No matter what you're writing, I think word choice is so important.
