Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1332 comments 25.1 - Valorie's Task - Independence Day
In honor U.S. Independence Day (July 4th)...
A. Read a book with a character that is in the military or retired from the military. EXAMPLE: Articles of War
AND
B.Read a book of your choice with a Blue, Red, or White cover.
(EXAMPLE: Come the Spring (Rose, #5) by Julie Garwood )

Please post cover when you post your task.

If you need suggestions OR have suggestions for books to read for this task post them here.

For part A, does the character who is "retired" from the military have to be someone who is technically "retired" (put in 20 years or so, and retired), or does a veteran work (someone who served in the military, but didn't make a career of it)?
Thanks!

message 3: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 1295 comments I highly recommend All Quiet on the Western Front if you have not read it.

I am thinking I am going to re-read A Farewell to Arms or For Whom the Bell Tolls. I just love Hemingway.

These work right...I feel like an idiot for asking that. :)

message 4: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 1295 comments clarifying question: Can the book for part A be nonfiction?

message 5: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 1295 comments Some colored covers from my tbr (let me know if you agree Valorie since they are not all solid like your example was):

Run by Ann Patchett

The Robe of Skulls by Vivian French

The Children's Book by A.S. Byatt

Smiles to Go by Jerry Spinelli

Are these covers okay for white?

A Short History of Rudeness Manners, Morals, and Misbehavior in Modern America by Mark Caldwell

Supreme Conflict The Inside Story of the Struggle for Control of the United States Supreme Court by Jan Crawford Greenburg

How about these for blue?
The Last Colony (Old Man's War, #3) by John Scalzi or
Half the Sky Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide by Nicholas D. Kristof

Thanks!

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 2114 comments Are you asking for a book on Amercans in the military? I have a book on my TBR, The Bamboo People by Mitali Perkins about young soldiers in Burma? Would this work?

message 8: by Cindy AL (new)

Cindy AL (cangelmd) | 645 comments Tagging onto Karen's question, should it be real military or can it be military science fiction or fantasy? I'm presuming that historical real military - Civil War, Napoleonic Wars is OK, what about those?

Deedee | 2383 comments Will this work for white?
Nothing to Envy Ordinary Lives in North Korea by Barbara Demick

message 10: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cindyreece) | 15 comments What about one of the books from David Baldacci about the Camel Club? I believe "Oliver Stone" is ex-military.

message 12: by Karen Michele (new)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 2114 comments I also wondered if this cover would count for white:
This is the UK copy and it is the one I own. I just started it and was going to push to finish it before the 1st because I hadn't found a place for it yet, but it's even about different color worlds, so let me know if it will fit.
Thanks for the fun task!

message 13: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jml_417) Will The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy work for military?

And, will Precious by Sapphire work for a white cover?

Thanks!

Ellen (missellen82) | 216 comments Lulu wrote: "What about one of the books from David Baldacci about the Camel Club? I believe "Oliver Stone" is ex-military."
"Stone" was CIA -- another member Reuben Rhodes is a West Point grad and Vietnam vet.

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) | 458 comments Would The Kitchen God's Wife by Amy Tan work for blue???

Elizabeth (Alaska) From my husband's library, Tug of War. I'm absolutely certain this isn't something I would have picked up, but it's a little over 200 pages and I might learn something. For the color, Dream When You're Feeling Blue. Note that the Berg book would also work in the Wedding task because it has BLUE in the title.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Cait, you're having way too much fun!

Liz Cait & Ms Anderson, I'm right there with you. I think I'm kind of OCD when it comes to all the lines of bookcovers. They look so pretty with their matching colors! ;)

Elizabeth (Alaska) And, as if I needed them, you've given me a few titles to add to my Wish List.
