Terry Burke Here are mine:

1. Deception Point
2. The Hunger Games
3. The Da Vinci Code

I love Dan Brown books, but the only think I dislike aobut them is how the chapters are so short and they change the POV's almost every chapter.

Daniel Gonçalves that is why dan is an average writter. Believe me. he is just a regular writter but prople tend to like him because he writes about contemporary topics.
Read stephen king or katherine neville if you want big and solid chapters

Nick 2E0NAQ This is a great book and I would read it again some time.

Susana Silvestre not all of us can like the same, thank god! This is one of the worst books I have ever read. Sorry...

Simon I don't mean to sound condescending, but I find the idea that Dan Brown could be in anyone's top 3 books rather laughable. It would be like saying Britney Spears is one of the best musicians ever.

message 7: by Bob (new) - rated it 4 stars

Bob Simon- I suppose that depends on your expectations when you approach a book or author.
Personally, I like Dan Brown's work quite a bit (with the exception of _The Lost Symbol_). But I have what some people would call very simple, pedestrian tastes when it comes to books. I like a good story, well told- which means engaging characters, interesting action, and solid internal logic. I honestly don't care about historical accuracy or 'reality checks' in the books I read. And I'm willing to forgive some almighty big plot holes if the story is engaging.
Yeah, that means I read a lot of what some people would call junk. But when all is said and done, aren't we all looking for entertainment?

Susana Silvestre The Da Vinci Code is entertaining, and can make you think about certain theological certainties.
Deception Point is just ridiculous! Really, in the sense that it made me laugh with every idiotic twist. Its like watching a really bad movie, those that go straight to DVD, but that can make you laugh because you don't take it seriously.

Charles I thought Digital Fortress was much better than Deception Point. I like Dan Brown's short chapters and change of perspective. What gets me about Brown's books is that I find it hard to call them mysteries. The only ones I've been "fooled" in are Davinci Code and Digital Fortress. Somebody told me that if we just read them as more of a sci-fi type instead of a mystery, then it becomes more enjoyable. Thats how I got through Deception Point, but it wasn't that great of a book in my opinion.

message 10: by Simon (last edited May 01, 2011 08:26AM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Simon I've read Digital Fortress, Deception Point, Da Vinci Code, Angels and Demons, and the Last Symbol. I have enjoyed reading every single one of them. The reason why I would never put him in any kind of top-100 isn't because he's a bad writer, but because I've read so many much better writers.

I know it's all a matter of taste, but to say that Dan Brown books should be ranked higher than, say, The Brothers Karamazov or Nausea or Mark Twain... It seems that's a bit disingenuous, because I think even hardcore Dan Brown fans have to admit that when it comes to the art of WRITING (not coming up with an interesting story), Dan Brown is pretty inferior.

Here's an example of bad writing - every Dan Brown books includes a very beautiful and very intelligent woman, and a very intelligent and brave man. Usually these two characters are introduced in the first 3-4 chapters. What I absolutely DESPISE is that the whole books is basically these two characters going through mortal danger, but you ALREADY KNOW THEY WILL NEVER DIE! Why? Well of course, because every Dan Brown book ends with those two characters having sex! No mystery, no suspense.

Tom Wiseman I've read all of Dan Brown's books, and truly enjoyed The Deception Point, but sadly would not place it in my top 3 favorite books, and perhaps not even in my top 10.

It's a great read, for sure, but top 3, no.

-Tom

Ghada Arafat Hmmmmmmmmmm not really I did not like it at all. Actually this book made me think again before reading anything for Dan

Terry Burke I've changed my top 3 books since May of last year. Thinking about it again, I'd like to change Deception Point, but keep The Da Vinci Code on the list. The Hunger Games has moved to number 1, and I'd say my number 2 is Q&A by Vikas Swarup.
Has anybody else read this book? It's the book Slumdog Millionaire was based on. There are some similarities, but mainly the stories and questions are very different. If you haven't read it, you should.

Mehwish Kayani It's an average book. As far as Dan Brown's writings are concerned he writes wonderfully making the reader fell for his story.
This book stood on average among his other books..But I'll really look forward to Dan's future writings..

EDantes Keep reading, Terry. I suspect you will see that top 3 continue to evolve.

I agree, though I enjoy Dan Brown's books, he's not much of an artist. He's an entertainer, following the same proven formula which produces page-turners that are simply escapist entertainment for the masses, just like most movies. Unfortunately in the 20th century this Escapist Fiction has taken over pop culture.

message 18: by Ken B (new) - rated it 1 star

Ken B I have read all of the Dan Brown books and have enjoyed most of them. I am not a fan of authors who use explosions to solve their issues, and Dan Brown does this frequently. Dan Brown books would not show up in my top 50 books but, like Simon says above "isn't because he's a bad writer, but because I've read so many much better writers."

message 19: by Anne (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anne This was his best book.

Nev Px I really didn't like this book, took far too long to get going and then when it did I was too bored to bother

message 21: by Çili (new) - added it

Çili I have read them all.I can not say which was the best because they were all wonderful.

Scott 3 favorite books? Not sure I can narrow it down that much, but there won't be any Dan Brown, as much as I enjoy his books....

1. Dickens, A Christmas Carol. No, I'm not being snooty. I read it every year. It's like an old friend.

2. I'd like to say the entire Harry Potter series, but that might be cheating, so I'll say Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The only part I don't like is the cheesy climax in which Harry and Voldemart are slowly circling each other while Harry monologues and everyone else watches.

3. Roger Kahn, The Boys of Summer. Best baseball book ever, and I'm not a Dodger fan.

message 23: by Jeff (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jeff Tucker I enjoyed all of Dan Brown's books and Deception Point was one of my favorites. I think it's perfectly fine to list this as one of your top 3 books. I think it's a wonderful thing that we all have different tastes in books, movies or music. I, for one, am too old to worry about what anyone else thinks about the things that I enjoy. I agree with you that this was a fun read.

Marline Enjoyed reading deception point. top 2 of dan brown from my list would be angels and deamons , digital fortress

Lana Bradstream I really enjoy Dan Brown's writing and the fact that his chapters are shorter. My day is so full of things and I will not stop reading a book in the middle of the chapter. It may not be literary genius, but I enjoy it.

I will be starting to read Deception Point today. I have previously read two works of Dan Brown. Digital Fortress which is one of my favorite books of all time. Then I read The Lost Symbol which was a book which disappointed me the most because I had so much expectations from it and it was really a poor book. Still I am a great fine of Dan Brown. I know he's not an artist. The reason I think certain people hate him is that he outdoes everybody. He's writing is quite different to any other writer you would ever read, might not be the best but he is a class apart. Let's agree with it. People are not used to what he writes, the plot and concept is weird but still he keeps you engaging.
Finally I would say that whatever people think about him I don't care, I just love him and would read every of his books.

Top 3 for me:
1) The Millenium Triology - Stieg Larsson
2) Digital Fortress - Dan Brown
3) Kane & Abel - Jeffrey Archer and The Kite Runner - Khaled Hosseini

Although I've read the Da Vinci code and the Deception point, they shall definitely not be included in my top 50 since both of the books failed to suprise me with their revealation of the criminal.

I have to agree. I'm not going to pretend that I will not buy everything that Dan puts out even after the huge disappointment that was Inferno, but its only okay. I think I rated Da Vinci Code 5 stars on here, but that was only for the fun factor of it all.
