Dfordoom | 5 comments I personally much prefer the old school mysteries. P. D. James is about as up-to-date as I ever get, and in generally I really prefer mysteries written before the Second World War. How about you?

Rochelle Gridley | 4 comments I would agree that I usually like the old manor house mysteries. However, recently I read the Steig Larsson books (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, etc.) and they are excellent. I do like Martha Grimes because of the humor in her books and they do tend to center in village life. I never got into the Sayers stroies and want to try them sometime soon. Can anyone suggest the best one to start with?

Dfordoom | 5 comments I think it's best to read the Dorothy Sayers books in sequence. Lord Peter Wimsey ages and goes through various changes as the books progress.

Have you ever read Georgette Heyers mysteries? Those have been enjoyable to me.

Rochelle Gridley | 4 comments I concur with the Georgette Heyer recommendation!!

It's a much delayed comment now but Dfordoom is quite right. Dorothy Sayers read in order is a truly beautiful thing! :-)

And on our Book of the Month discussion thread...I just suggested we start with Whose body? by D. Sayers. Hope some on here will jump on board or make another suggestion!

message 8: by Sherry (new)

Sherry I'm glad you suggested the Dorothy Sayers book. I had been considering starting to read her books, and that solidified my decision. I just placed it on hold at the library. Thanks!

By the way, I also love Georgette Heyer's mysteries. They're such fun!

And I would be greatly in the debt of anyone who can suggest some good authors of manor house mysteries, especially series.

Elizabeth (elizabeth8921) | 41 comments Reading P.D James and would love to go with a book from Dorothy Sayers. Have not read her.

All - on the BoM discussion thread, a few of us have agreed on the Dorothy Sayer's book Whose Body for our first Book of the Month club book for the group. I'm proposing that we aim to have it finished by the end of February. Check your local libraries/used book stores...no need for our wee hobby to break the bank. Please feel to use the discussion thread for this book to confirm your participation, OK?
