message 1: by Chachic (new)

Chachic | 262 comments Hi guys! We have this similar thread in my other Goodreads group and I think it would be fun to list down your finds in one thread. I'm interested to know where people buy their books and what's available in those stores.

message 2: by Chachic (new)

Chachic | 262 comments I'll start with my splurges for this month. I got the following from Fully Booked:

Summer in the City by Elizabeth Chandler Major Crush by Jennifer Echols The Lost Conspiracy by Frances Hardinge The Ex Games by Jennifer Echols

Not all at the same time though. I picked them up one at a time and Fully Booked is the only bookstore which has these books. Recently, I went to the POB (previously owned books) section of National Bookstore Cubao and picked up the following:

The Book of Dead Days by Marcus Sedgwick Regency Buck by Georgette Heyer Surrender None (Legacy of Gird, Book 1) by Elizabeth Moon Lucia, Lucia by Adriana Trigiani Beauty by Robin McKinley

All for P200 only! :)

message 3: by Aaron Vincent (new)

Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) | 2053 comments There's also a POB section in NBS Cubao?! I thought it was only on the North Ave. branch.

message 4: by Chachic (new)

Chachic | 262 comments North Ave? Do you mean the Quezon Ave branch?

message 5: by Chachic (new)

Chachic | 262 comments The POB section is Cubao is a lot bigger than the one in Quezon Ave.

message 6: by Aaron Vincent (new)

Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) | 2053 comments Oh shoot. Yeah. Quezon Ave. See I really easily get lost in the QC Circle. lol

message 7: by Chachic (new)

Chachic | 262 comments The POB section in Cubao is the entire fourth floor. You could spend hours in there.

message 8: by Aaron Vincent (new)

Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) | 2053 comments Would I enjoy spending hours there though? You know that only the YA section is the only section I go to if I am in a bookstore. hehe

message 9: by Chachic (new)

Chachic | 262 comments They have a lot of YA books in there.

message 10: by Aaron Vincent (new)

Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) | 2053 comments Oh cool. I would definitely go there soon.

Anyways these are my latest splurge:

Point Blank (Alex Rider, #2) by Anthony Horowitz Scorpia (Alex Rider, #5) by Anthony Horowitz Eagle Strike (Alex Rider, #4) by Anthony Horowitz Skeleton Key (Alex Rider, #3) by Anthony Horowitz Geektastic Stories from the Nerd Herd by Holly Black The Necromancer (The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, #4) by Michael Scott

And the hardcover edition of

Gone (Gone, #1) by Michael Grant

message 11: by Chachic (new)

Chachic | 262 comments The first three Anthony Horowitz books are available in the Cubao POB section for P30 each. :) My friend gave it to me last March.

message 12: by Chachic (new)

Chachic | 262 comments Here's a picture of the books my friends gave me for my birthday and these were all from the POB section: http://pics.livejournal.com/chachic/p...

message 13: by Aaron Vincent (new)

Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) | 2053 comments WHAAAAATTTTT!!!!!!!!!???? Alex Rider 1, 2 and 3 for only 30 pesos????

The world is a huge bitch!

message 14: by Apokripos (new)

Apokripos (apokalypse) | 3321 comments Ohhhh! I love NBS Cubao POB! If there ain't no good books at BookSale I always head there...

I reckon that's where I got

Wolves of the Calla (The Dark Tower, #5) by Stephen King
by Stephen King for only 100 Hardcover First Edition...

Yeheey! ^_^

message 15: by Chachic (new)

Chachic | 262 comments Aaron, yep that's why you should check it out! They don't always price their books that cheap. Other times the books cost around 100 for paperbacks and 250 for hardcovers.

Jason, nice find! A first edition!

Agree! Kung minsan talaga pana-panahon...

NBS Cubao is the one of the places that gives me headache... Just the half of the floor takes me like two hours to scour for some good finds...

Ohhh... NBS Cubao...

message 17: by Ariel (new)

Ariel Acupan | 390 comments NBS cubao, is that the one at the back of Gateway?

message 18: by Apokripos (new)

Rightee-oh!

message 19: by Chachic (new)

Chachic | 262 comments Yes, you really have to devote hours when you want to browse that entire section.

message 20: by Ranee (new)

Ranee | 1902 comments but beware, NBS Cubao closes at 8pm! hehe.

message 21: by Celina (new)

Celina (celinabac) | 67 comments CHACHIC: You're so lucky with your finds. I was just there last week and didn't find anything! But I got these:

From Fully Booked
The Abhorsen Chronicles (The Abhorsen Trilogy, #1-3) by Garth Nix Fire (The Seven Kingdoms Trilogy, #2) by Kristin Cashore

From Booksale
Everlost (Skinjacker, #1) by Neal Shusterman Let's Get Lost by Sarra Manning The Fire by Katherine Neville

message 22: by Chachic (new)

Chachic | 262 comments Celina, those are great finds in Booksale! What branch of Booksale did you go to?

Bluemoon, did you get yours from Chapters?

message 23: by Chachic (new)

Chachic | 262 comments Hahaha no, I just know that that's your favorite bookstore there in Canada!

message 24: by Chachic (new)

Chachic | 262 comments I have a feeling you also know what my favorite bookstore here in the Philippines is. Right?

message 25: by Aaron Vincent (new)

Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) | 2053 comments Chachic., That's pretty easy. It's not like we got tons of choices here.

message 26: by Celina (new)

Celina (celinabac) | 67 comments Chachic wrote: "Celina, those are great finds in Booksale! What branch of Booksale did you go to?

Thanks Chachic, I got them at Booksale at SM Southmall. So far, that is my favorite branch here at the south.

message 27: by Chachic (new)

Chachic | 262 comments Celina, no wonder it's your favorite. You've gotten some pretty good books there.

Bluemoon, I would have to agree! Even though we always complain about availability over here, things have really gotten better ever since Fully Booked arrived on the scene. It's funny because my most recent blog post is about availability of books here: http://chachic.wordpress.com/2010/06/...

message 32: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments Wow Jzhun. Dami mong pera!
Yesterday, I bought The Chocolate War (you rated this with 5 stars) at P15. BS North EDSA. Nakita kong hawak ng young girl at binabasa ang blurbs. Nakita ko na ito sa FB The Fort last month at P495 and I almost bought it because I had read your teasers while reading it or while you were still planning to read it. But since it is not 1001, I dropped it. Pero kahapon, I was repeating a mantra na sana bitawan nya, sana bitawan nya. ha ha ha. Binitawan nga!

Bluemoon wrote: "ooooo...you guys are buying books like CRAZY!!!!"

Guilty! Though, i have less time to read now coz classes starts Tuesday. But whenever I have this urge to grab that book, i always reasoned that someday, I will have that time to read all those books and I actually have this vision of my own public library (God's willing) open to less fortunate kids who cant afford to buy books. So my buying now is sort of an investment for that dream. : )

message 35: by Ranee (new)

Ranee | 1902 comments kafka for 180 pesos? where?

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments Ranee wrote: "kafka for 180 pesos? where?"

Sa Pampanga raw. Bihira yon no? Bargain na Murakami. Normally pag may Murakami ka, di mo ibebenta o ipapahiram (except kay Ranee ha ha). Parang magiging treasured possession mo yon. Ha ha ha

message 37: by Ace (new)

Ace (lj560) | 1169 comments I bought my "A Wild Sheep Chase" in NBS at Php50(brand new). Ang lakas ko nga daw sa kanila sabi nung mga sales ladies dun. hehehe!

Sa NBS SM Pampanga nga Renee. I saw it sa napakagulong display ng mga books! Nagulat nga din ako. Medyo tattered na kasi and may water damage yung bandang dulong pages, pocket book size. I think P300 ++ yung original price. Since its my first time to read Murakami..it will do.

Apokripos (apokalypse) | 3321 comments @Kuya Doni: I highly recommend The Chocolate War! I guess this one of 'em books that makes you wanna grab the closest people around you and shove it on their face and say "You gotta read this!" I dare say Cormier really set the bar how we look at YA right now. It may not be included in the 1001 Books but it definitely paved the way for the YA Genre the respect it has right now.

As one critic noted Cormier was the one who put literature in the YA Literature category.

I read on a thread somewhere that you're past those books with exciting plot and all, I say this one has a fast-paced writing, the twists will make you aghast, and ending will devastate you. You'll suddenly think about yourself and the world around you if what the novel told is truth or not.
But for me what made me give it 5 stars is its challenging theme that starts with this equally challenging question:

Do you dare disturb the universe?

We have the same dilemma today, I'm reading "Written In Bone" by Simon Beckett and I don't know why I can't imagine what I'm reading and after reading a chapter, I really can't tell what happened in that chapter.

message 48: by Apokripos (new)

Apokripos (apokalypse) | 3321 comments @Ace and Bluemoon: I guess the both of you might have a reader's burn out syndrome. Well then my advice is to steer clear of reading. I always felt that from time to time. What I do is I just watch films on dvd so that I'll miss reading. And that's the antidote to that I think, you must feel that you "miss" reading...
