What would you like to add, ladies?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh
The Judy Moody books by Megan McDonald.
The Clementine books by Sara Pennypacker.
The Ramona books by Beverly Cleary.
Dragon's Milk by Susan Fletcher, and its sequels.
Mandy by Julie Andrews.
Everything ever written by Tamora Pierce and Robin McKinley.

And YES, A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle, and From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsberg! Those are two of my all-time favorites, Misha. :)

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Bun, I never thought of The Borrowers that way before, but you're right! Arrietty is totally an adventurous, smart girl!

Deltora Quest series byEmily Rodda, The Rangers Apprentice series by john flanagon , Artemis Fowel Eoin Colfer are books my daughter read when she was younger. I don't know if they qualify for your category but my daughter is adventurous & very smart (and I am a totally bias parent). :)

Cosmic Sher (sherart) | 2234 comments I read The October Country & The Halloween Tree when I was young and they shaped my reading & interests more than I realized growing up. It also inspired my writing stories. Ray Bradbury still does.

Misha, I think it's really cool what you got from the Nancy Drew series. Sometimes it's not about what might influence you negatively but what does influences you positively instead. I'd also put the whole The Time Trilogy: A Swiftly Tilting Planet, A Wind in the Door and A Wrinkle in Time on the list. It definitely had an impact on my view of the Cosmos. :)

Samantha (samhanson) I really loved Julie of the Wolves and Matilda as a kid, as well as all the American Girl books. Although it's more YA, I was super into the Daughters of the Moon series by Lynne Ewing too.

I think adventurous girls should read the same books as adventurous boys, and vice versa. I never thought, reading a book about a boy having an adventure, "I love this book, but it's about a boy so it doesn't relate to me." Good stories are good stories.

Misha wrote: "Yes! Harriet the Spy! Another book that very much influenced me as a child. I even started keeping a snarky journal about my classmates for awhile."

Me too. I became a child spy...
