July 2010
If you do the latter, make sure to put who recommended it to you and an explanation of how each of you felt about the book.
Lalala. I'm just posting to move this one up a bit since tomorrow is July (how did that happen??).
So which day in July is the Father/Daughter Take-a-Walk Day? I have 3 daughters, and I'll send them and their daddy out of the house.

Jennifer W wrote: "Lalala. I'm just posting to move this one up a bit since tomorrow is July (how did that happen??)."June went by WAY too fast!
Definitely. July is going to be tough. I'm mentally thinking through my bookshelf right now. I think there are way too many challenges going on for me right now. LOL.
Amy wrote: "Definitely. July is going to be tough. I'm mentally thinking through my bookshelf right now. I think there are way too many challenges going on for me right now. Too many challenges to fit books into! I know you're working on the UTBG too. Ay carumba! :)
Angela, It is working out pretty well actually :) I just multi-challenged :P
I plan on reading 17 UTBG and 16 monthly challenge books (some overlapped) all within the reading challenge #5 (where I have 40 books scheduled).
Completed Tasks: JulyCatalyst by Laurie Halse Anderson 7/4/10
Father/Daughter theme. He is a preacher (of a religion that I couldn't put my finger on) & she has no faith. Also, he puts something on her in the book that she hates, but really changes her.

For July I read A Swift Pure Cry which is a father/daughter story set in Ireland. The mother has passed and the father becomes an alcoholic, so the oldest daughter becomes a surrogate mother to the two younger siblings. Heartbreaking but beautiful story.

I just finished How to Build a House by Dana Reinhardt. For more info, see this link: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/3...Really enjoyed this book!
Laura wrote: "I just finished How to Build a House by Dana Reinhardt. For more info, see this link: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/3......"Welcome to the board Laura! You earned 2 points :)
I read Confetti Girl which in part is about a girl and her father dealing with the sudden loss of her mother.
Jolynn wrote: "I read Confetti Girl which in part is about a girl and her father dealing with the sudden loss of her mother."Sounds sad :(
Welcome to the scoreboard Jolynn :) You earned 2 points.
I read The Carbon Diaries 2015 which has an interesting relationship between Laura and her dad. It's dystopian so he suddenly reverts into backyard farmer man because he can't get a job and her mom leaves for a break from it all, leaving her to deal with her nutty dad. It's quite an interesting story.
AngelaSunshine wrote: "Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creechgreat book!"
I am so glad you liked it!! It is one of my favorites :)
Actually, speaking to the theme, I wish the dad had been more prevalent in the story.
Laura wrote: "I just finished Burned by Ellen Hopkins. What a tremendous book, recommended to me by my daughter."What is this book of Hopkins's about? I've read Crank and Glass and really... I guess enjoyed (?) them both. Not exactly fun books, but very good.

True! I guess I'd expected it to be more "Indian" with the title, which had been keeping me from reading it. (The whole part in New Moon about La Push was the only part I skimmed through and didn't truly read!) But that wasn't what the story was about at all... I enjoyed it.
Raised by Wolves by Jennifer Lynn BarnesBryn is a human raised by wolves and is Marked (claimed) by the Alpha, who acts as her father and protects her.
Kristen wrote: "Oh! I loved Raised by Wolves! It does have a great father figure in it too!"I really liked it too. Dang it, another series to read... :)
Ask Me No Questions is the story of 2 girls trying to go on with their lives after their father is detained trying to cross the Canadian border for amnesty.

The Venetian Betrayal: A Novel
My dad recommended it to me. My review pretty much says how I feel about it, my dad liked it about the same, for similar reasons. :)
Points: 2
Jesi, you get 2 points for the first book you read within the month (so you get 2 points for The Venetian Betrayal). You then can get 1 more point for every other book you read that fits the criteria (ie: if you read another book recommended by your dad, you'll get another point), through the end of the month.
If you miss a month, you may go back and read 1 book for 1 point (for example, if you read a book with the word "summer" or "sun" in the title, you may get 1 point for June's task). Post those books and points in the appropriate discussion board.
Hope this helps! Welcome to the challenge!

I get points! **happy dance** ...is it sad that these points that I "win" in my groups make me read books I'd otherwise not bother with?
No that's perfectly normal. Since joining goodreads, I've read a bunch of books I wouldn't pick but actually liked! This group is great for getting you out of your comfort zone.
I just finished Tyger Tyger and the daughter in the book sets out to save her father from the hands of an evil goblin. Quite a good fantasy read. :)
I just finished The Clockwork Three by Matthew Kirby, which involved a girl who had to find a cure for her father who was about to lose his leg to infection.
I just read Wildthorn and a large part of the novel focuses on Louisa's relationship with her father and how he supports her on her want to become a doctor.
I read:A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly, about a girl (and her siblings) being raised by their dad
Salvaged by Stefne Miller, about a girl whose dad can't bear to be around her since her mom was killed in an accident

Wow- Salvaged sounds rough....

It's actually a Christian book, so it's nice to see the author tackle some tough real life kind of issues. It was sad, but not overly so. That wasn't all the main character was dealing with.
Read:A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett
The bond between Sara Crewe and her father was so sweet; I cried when she lost him. (I love the movie so much--one of my all-time favorites.)

Fade to Blue Sophie's father disappeared a year ago on her Birthday. Can she figure out what happened to him? Does she really want to know? Very weird book.

I finished An Abundance of Katherines on 7/30, just late in posting. My daughter said it's her favorite book, so I read it. It was great!

Kayla, when did you finish this book? If you read it in July you do get the 1 point, but if you read it in August, you won't get the point since you've already met the challenge.
