Tara | 142 comments What was you First Sherrilyn Kenyon book? Did you start with the Dark-Hunter series or another one? Did you read them in order? Let us know.

message 2: by Tara (new)

Tara | 142 comments I found the Dark-Hunter series just last year. I was working with a bunch of people who were loving True Blood the tv series and one of them mentioned it was based on a book series. And my OCD wouldn't let me watch the series without first reading the books, and once I finished those, I started looking for another series. After a few short series, I discovered the Dark-hunters. I wasn't sold after Fantasy Lover, but after reading about Kyrian, I was hooked. It took me about a month to get through the series, and I remember I was so bummed because I had been living in that world for so long I couldn't get into another series... until... well, that is a story for another group, but if you've seen me around GR, I suspect you know what it was!

Lacy♪ ♫Movements of a Demigod ♪ ♫ (lb3553) | 7 comments The first book I picked up was Dark Side of the Moon as I was browsing through Books-A-Million. I was trying to find an author like Christine Feehan because I had read all her books and was instantly hooked to Kenyon. Since I started in the middle I had to go out and get all the other books before it to catch up. So far I've read all the Dark Hunter books and most of the related book. I have also read Infinity, the BAD Agency Series, and the League Series. I haven't read the manga or her Kinley MacGregor works yet, but I'm sure I will get to them eventually.

Bethany The first book I read was Fantasy Lover, and in the space of two weeks I read the whole of the DH series. I didn't read any of the books in order (I have a really bad habit of reading series in the wrong order) so I've gone back and re-read them in the right order a couple of times.

I've read all her League books as well as Infinity and the first of her Lords of Avalon books. I've got the BAD series in my TBR pile.

message 6: by Tara (new)

Tara | 142 comments I've also read the League series and the BAD series and I'm reading Infinity, I hope to be finished with it by tomorrow or Friday. I own the first of the manga series but I haven't gotten around to reading it...

(3) Whispered Lies (Carlos & Gabrielle)
(4) Silent Truth (Hunter & Abbie)

I'll be skipping that series because I just don't like military men blah! lol

Fangirl Musings (fangirlmusings) My entry into the Sherrilyn Kenyon world started in 2004. It was about eight or nine at night, and I was bored to tears. So I went browsing at a local bookstore.

After I had randomly snatched up a few paranormal romance novels, I was at the checkout when the saleslady actually took note of what I was buying. She suggested that, if I loved paranormal romance so much, there was a relatively new author on the scene that I would probably enjoy.

I'm -extremely- picky when it comes to my books, but because I didn't want to be mean, I expressed a lot of interest and asked her what author/books she suggested. She left the counter and took me to a book area where Sherri's novels were on display and proceeded to explain to me that the Dark-Hunter series was pretty much kick-ass, and that book one was technically Night Pleasures, while Fantasy Lover was a prequel.

So, I figured, "what the hey," and bought Night Pleasures, thinking that it couldn't hurt to try another author.

And, oooooh-boy! No doubt about it- I was hooked! I immediately went out and purchased all her then-released books, which at that point were books up until Kiss of the Night. I've been following the series ever since, and it's a little funny to think that the first time I read Night Play was when it was a new release! (I would say that book is my favorite, but each and every DH, and SK, book ARE my favorites. Picking is simply impossible.)

But it's not just the Dark-Hunter series that I love and follow. Frankly, I adore Sherrilyn's writing style, period. As such, I have read every single book of hers (barring Silent Truth and Whispered Lies, which those I'm planning on reading right after I finish rereading some of her other books for quotes). I even have some of her WAY older novels too (Daemon's Angel, Paradise City, etc.)

Each series of hers is my favorite, truly. The League, The MacAllisters, Brotherhood of the Sword, Sea Wolf, Lords of Avalon, BAD- and of course, her manga, LOA Marvel comics, Dark-Hunters, and Chronicles of Nick, as well as all her anthologies and short stories.

Literally my entire room, walls, and doors are plastered from floor to ceiling with Sherrilyn Kenyon paraphernalia (printed graphics, bags, shirts, posters, etc.), I've been a member of the fan club for four years now, have been to see Sherri three times in a row each year at book signings, have two 3 inch binders dedicated to entire book
quotes from all her series and character profiles, and I have been doing a yearly series reread of Sherri's books for the last three years, now. I try to squeeze in all her books for the reread, but sometimes that's not always possible, LOL.

If I ever have kids, I even plan on naming them after characters in the series. Needless to say, I'm as die-hard fan as they come, LOL.

(On a side note, anyone here as excited about the Ash and Simi doll release as I am?!?!! :-) )

But with only reading that I see many sleepless nights, many grumpy days at work because I cant read while i am working and an obsession that to many people will be classified as not normal but to my friends on goodreads it will be classified as a must with any great series.

message 16: by Fangirl Musings (new)

Fangirl Musings (fangirlmusings) Oooh!

(*Rubs hands together excitedly* Always fun to help out a new fan!)

Welcome to the SK/DH world, Carole! :) Sherri's books are wide and varied, no doubt, and the answer to "where to start" really depends on what genres are your favorite, or what you're in the mood for.

Sherri has a TON of series under her belt. There's the Dark Hunters, The League, The BAD (co-authored with the wonderful Diana Love), the MacAllisters, the Brotherhood of the Sword, Chronicles of Nick, the Lords of Avalon, as well as the upcoming Belador (again, co-authored with Love) and the Nevermore series. (Not to mention Sherri's other works, such as her Dark-Hunter Manga and her Marvel comics of the Lords of Avalon .)

Personally, I love each and every one of Sherri's series and read 'em all :-). However, a lot of fans will say that what reeled them in, at least initially, were the Dark-Hunter books (included are the Were-Hunter and Dream-Hunter books, as well). But, to each their own of course, so for the sake of being brief, the following are the official overviews of some of Sherri's most popular series.

Dark-Hunter
The Dark-Hunters is one of the longest running vampire series on the market and has an international following. It routinely hits on bestseller lists the world over and is the series Sherri is most known for. These are ancient warriors who sold their souls to the goddess Artemis to protect mankind from the demons and vampires who prey on the world. The thing that most sets this series apart from other vampire series is that it's based on Greek mythology and instead of being immortal, Sherri's vampires only live 27 years unless they decide to feed on human souls. But those souls quickly die and they must keep taking human souls or die. Book one of the series is Night Pleasures. the website is http://dark-hunter.com/

Chronicles of Nick
The Chronicles are about Nick Gautier who is a character out of the Dark-Hunter series. Book one starts when Nick is 14 and he's first introduced into the realm of demons, zombies, vampires and shapeshifters. If you like Twilight, Vampire Academy, Vampire Diaries or House of Night, you definitely want to check it out. Book 1 is called Infinity. Website for the series: http://NickGautier.com/ or http://chroniclesofnick.com/

The League
Set in a science fiction world, the League is about renegade assassins and thieves who protect those wrongfully marked for execution by a corrupt government. They are Hell's new heroes who refuse to bow down to anyone. This is also the only SF series other than Star Wars to hit #1 on the NYT list. Book one of the series is Born of Night. The website is http://LivetheLeague.com/

Lords of Avalon
Based on the Arthurian legends, LOA is about what happened to Camelot after Arthur fell. Now that Camelot is in the hands of ultimate evil, Morgen le Fey, Arthur's knights are fighting to get it back. To protect mankind, Merlin has pulled Avalon, Glastonbury Tor and Camelot out of time and placed them in an alternate realm that is ruled by magick, but earth is still the battleground and the fate of mankind hinges on the victor. The first novel is Knight of Darkness and these are also a graphic novel published by Marvel. This is also a top NYT bestselling series. The website is http://lordsofavalon.com/ The setting for these is fantasy and urban fantasy. Some take place in the middle ages and some in contemporary settings. Some in both.

BAD Agency
Another NYT bestselling series (notice the trend here), these are suspense novels. The Bureau of American Defense (BAD) is a multinational, anti terrorism organization that is trying to save the world from the evil machinations of the Fratelli- an Illumanti type organization that is out to own the world. Sherri writes these with Dianna Love. The first book of the series is Bad Attitude. The website is http://badagency.com/

Manga
Manga, for those who don't know, is the word for Japanese comic books. The Dark-Hunters are a New York Times bestselling manga series. It's the manga adaptation of the Dark-Hunter books for those ages 14 and over.

Hope that helps, Carole!

Now, I am still reading it somewhat out of order. I just HAD TO readh Archeron when it was out, coz I just couldn't wait. So--Now I am trying to finish...I have numbers--> 7,8, and 14 before I will be current and ready for No Mercy. Can't freakin' wait!

1998-I had been bed ridden for about a week following surgery, and had run out of books. ~gasp~ I sent my hubby to pick up a few books for me, as I had 3 more weeks of forced rest. One of the books he brought home was Born of the Night. The US Original edition. The cover turned me off, sci-fi look, with those moons....and I didn't read it until I had run through all of the other books. I was surprised I liked it. :)
I haven't read any other books from The League series.

HI Stacy, you have to read the others, born of fire was a bit slow, but it does get better. I was a little dissapointed with born of Ice, would have enjoyed this more if there had been a bigger story line, the same size as BON & BOF. let me know what you think once you've read the others
Cheers Carol :)

Cf Hello - New to the group

I just finished Fantasy Lover and hated it. Do you suggest that I continue with the series? I am really hesitant to invest my time in such a long series if the books do not get better.

Please give me your opinion?

message 26: by Tara (new)

Tara | 142 comments Hi CF, welcome!

Did you hate the story or the writing. If you hate the writing, I'm not sure what to tell you, every author can't please everyone. You could try her BAD series, there is a co-author that does those. But if you just don't like her, then perhaps Sherrilyn Kenyon and this group aren't for you.

HOWEVER, If you just didn't like the story, I would definitely say to try the next one: Night Pleasures. While people (including myself) will tell you that Fantasy Lover important for background information on many characters we will see throughout the first dozen or so books, it isn't technically a Dark-Hunter book. Night Pleasures is where we meet the first Dark-Hunter, Kyrian. (Who you heard about in Fantasy Lover). It is also the book that establishes many of the reoccurring characters- some of who will become MAJOR players later in the series. This book is also a good representation of what to expect, mostly in the first few books, although we start meeting other things- Were-Hunters, Dream-Hunters, Demons...

So in short I'd say see how you feel after NIght Pleasures, if you still hate it, then maybe the Dark Hunter series isn't for you. But if you liked it enough to see the potential, then keep going, I think they get stronger as the series goes. But these are all just my opinions!

Let us know what you decide! :)

message 27: by Cf (new)

Cf Thank you Tara for your quick response.

I did not enjoy the story of Fantasy Lover. The writing was fine. However, do to your suggestion I will give Night Pleasure a chance.

Once again thank you.

Tara | 142 comments You're Welcome CF, STop back and let me know how it works out. :)

message 29: by Fangirl Musings (new)

Fangirl Musings (fangirlmusings) Awesome sum-up, Tara! I liked that a lot :).

And, CF, I'm in complete agreement with Tara. The writing style remains the same throughout the books, and the storyline in Fantasy Lover is unique unto itself in comparison to the other Dark-Hunter novels.

Sherri wrote Fantasy Lover as a way of "backdooring" her way into getting her Dark-Hunter books published. Like Tara said, it isn't technically book one of the series, but it is vastly important (I think.) Sherri started her Dark-Hunter books back in the day when "vampire" was a four letter word and nothing paranormal was selling. So, to compensate, she wrote Fantasy Lover as a way of tricking to publishers to prove that readers still loved paranormal, despite what the market trends were saying.

And she was right!

So, if Fantasy Lover's story wasn't your cup of tea, keep going - they do get better, right from jump. :)

message 37: by Cf (new)

Cf Quick Advice!

Do you have to read the series in order?

message 38: by Bethany (new)

Bethany Cf - I didn't read the series in order but I think it does help if you do because some characters re-appear and are introduced and others have story lines that continue over more than one book.

-x-

message 39: by Teryl (new)

Teryl CF - I recommend reading it in order because of events that happen that lead up to later books. But, then I have a tendency to be a freak about series order, lol

message 40: by Tara (new)

Tara | 142 comments I'm an absolute stickler for reading in order, but I think with this series, you'll miss some stuff, and each book sort of introduces you to new characters who you go on to get to know really well in a later book. Plus there is background overall story that will get muddy.

message 41: by Cf (new)

Cf Thanks Bethany, Teryl and Tara for your quick responses.

message 42: by Fangirl Musings (new)

Fangirl Musings (fangirlmusings) CF - From the author herself on the FAQs of her site:

Q: Do the books have to be read in order?
A: Absolutely not. As with all my series, they have recurring characters and do refer to events in past books, but each one is written with new readers in mind. So if you pick up in the middle of the series or skip around, you won't miss anything.

I personally, though, read the series in order (lucked out on that) and I'm in agreement with everyone here that, for cohesive comprehension, it's best to read them in order :).

Cf I have finished all the books except for No Mercy. I have enjoyed some books more than others. I was a bit disappointed with Acheron's book. The sexual abuse was overkill and too long and the latter part was a rush mess. Really Tory for Ash - there was no passion what a boring couple. My only question is now that Nick is half demon is Simi his future mate? Also, what will Fang and Aimee's children be human, abomination or wolf/bear hybrid?

message 45: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianejan3) My first ever SK book was "Night Embrace".
I didn't really love the book, it was alright, but I was intrigued by Zarek and Acheron so I came back for more.

Listed in the order of how I read them:
Night Embrace
Dream Chaser
Devil May Cry
Dance With The Devil
Acheron

I'm purchasing more of the books online, hopefully I'll have them by he end of the week.

Nikki ~Kharma~ (nikki_kharma) Hi Yall, Im new here.

My name is Nikki, and the first SK book I read was Acheron - early last year. I was browsing for a new read and came across it. I loved the cover so I bought it. At first I wasnt sure that it was a series, but I read the author notes about how this was much darker than the rest of her books. I cried and cried but finally made it through. I fell in love with all the characters, especially Simi...just love her. I continued to read out of order, then went back and read in order...much better that way. I have read all the DH, WH & DH in this series along with the first two in the League. I am currently waiting for No mercy to come out in paper back (I know it sounds odd, but since the rest of the series I own is in paperback...I cant mess it up with buying the hardback....plus with limited spending for books, I have to go the cheap way :D)

I will agree with CF - the end of the book seemed kind of rushed, but the first part does explain so much through out the series and why Acheron is how he is....but none the less I love him.
