message 2: by Nadia (new)

Nadia A (bagambo) Zoe, I want to read The Pasage, too! It sounds like it will be such a great read! I have The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo on my TBR list and The Hunger Games - I'm so behind with those series.

Ooohh, I've added Stiff and taken it off of my TBR a couple of times. I think it sounds really interesting, but I can't decide if it will utterly creep me out! Haha! Do you know anyone who's read it?

message 4: by Zoe (new)

Zoe | 113 comments Sorry Wallace, just saw your message! Stiff was good, but not great. Some interesting parts and some dry stuff. It didn't creep me out but I think I have a higher "creep out thresh-hold" than you, LOL!

I read 'The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner' yesterday afternoon. It's a Twilight novella that focuses on a peripheral character from Eclipse. It was good; I liked having another peek into the Twilight world.

The movie Eclipse was great, BTW. Better than the first two movies combined!

message 5: by Nadia (new)

Nadia A (bagambo) Hi Zoe! I just saw Eclipse today and loved it!! I think it was even better than the first two films.

Zoe, you definitely have a higher creep out thresh-hold than I do! :)

Noted.. Twilight is in the Summer queue! Am working on Outlander right now.

message 7: by Zoe (new)

Zoe | 113 comments Nadia - I think my friend and I are going to go see it AGAIN next week! I tried to add you on FB, BTW, but it wouldn't let me :( The "add as friend" button was missing.

Wallace - How far into Outlander are you? Are you liking it so far???

message 8: by Wallace (new)

Wallace | 303 comments Mod
I'm about 160 pages in. YES! You were so right, the first 50 pages were ok, but (literally) at page 50 (like you said) it sped right up. I've only been reading it in snippets at bedtime and I'm already as far as I am. I'm trying to figure out what happens with the rest of the series (I.e. the fact that there is a rest of the series makes me believe she doesn't find her way back home. But I won't let myself look at the descriptions of others in the series for fear it will give it away. ;)

message 9: by Zoe (new)

Zoe | 113 comments I'm about 1/2 way through Wuthering Heights and, sadly, I am just not that into it. I don't really see what all the hype is about. I'm not a big fan of the language and I don't really sympathize with any of the characters. Any Wuthering Heights fans out there that can tell me what the appeal for them is???

message 10: by Nadia (new)

Nadia A (bagambo) Zoe, I'm one of the few who has yet to read that book. It just has never really caught my interest. Everyone I know who has read it has loved it, but who knows if they were telling the truth. Sometimes I think people say they like a book, because everyone else seems to rave about it. Hmmm.

message 11: by Wallace (new)

Wallace | 303 comments Mod
I know you know this, Zoe, but I didn't like Wuthering Heights either. I tried to read it last year and just could not finish it. I gave you the link to Opinions of a Wolf, but then i realized it was a different classics that she read and didn't like (Woman in White). I know Ti (www.bookchatter.net) did a whole series on Wuthering Heights. Might be interesting to read those.

message 12: by Zoe (new)

Zoe | 113 comments FINALLY finished Wuthering Heights and I hated it from start to finish! I'm ready to move on to The Madonnas of Echo Park.

message 13: by Wallace (new)

Wallace | 303 comments Mod
Good for you for finishing. "I hated it from start to finish"... I'm laughing!

message 14: by Nadia (new)

Nadia A (bagambo) Congrats on finishing Wuthering Heights! That completely rots that you hated it, but you persevered and finished it - you rock! And now you can move on the better reads :)

message 15: by Zoe (new)

Zoe | 113 comments Yes, I'm 3 chapters into The Madonnas of Echo Park and loving it!

message 16: by Wallace (new)

Wallace | 303 comments Mod
Oh good! I have 100 pgs of Outlander and then I'm there with you. Knowing your reading habits, you'll probably be done by then, haha! But at least we can discuss soon! :)

Zoe | 113 comments Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro Never Let Me Go

I keep hearing such good things about this book! It has also been made into a movie that is being released in September. PBS estimates that I will get it in about 7 weeks, so right before the movie opens!

message 18: by Wallace (new)

Wallace | 303 comments Mod
Is this the movie with Keira Knightly? and Carey Mulligan?

message 19: by Zoe (new)

Zoe | 113 comments YES!!!

message 20: by Nadia (new)

Nadia A (bagambo) Zoe, I'm looking forward to your thoughts on the book. I will definitely be watching the film version of it - I like Carey Mulligan. As for the book, I wasn't a huge fan of it - there were parts that I really did enjoy and others that I just didn't. Perhaps I'll do a reread of it, before the movie comes out - I'm sure there are things that I missed, which made me a bit iffy on the book. Hmmm.

message 21: by Wallace (new)

Wallace | 303 comments Mod
I remember you saying that, Nadia. The movie looks really good though!

Zoe, I'll wait to hear what you think before adding it to my TBR.

have you gotten this yet?How are you doing on your TBR list... made any dents?

message 23: by Zoe (new)

Zoe | 113 comments Not yet! I've got about a 5 week wait, I think. From my TBR list I've read:

Gossip of the Starlings
Wuthering Heights
Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers
20th Century Ghosts

None of these books was unputdownable, but they were all (besides WH) enjoyable.

The rest I'm still waiting for from PBS

Wallace | 303 comments Mod
I almost borrowed Stiff from the library. I actually thought it looked pretty interesting, but then I couldn't decide if I would be able to handle it.

message 25: by Zoe (new)

Zoe | 113 comments I think you could handle it. It's more interesting, rather than gruesome.

message 26: by Wallace (new)

Wallace | 303 comments Mod
oh wow, I will have some issues with the animal stuff as well... big animal lover here. But sounds VERY interesting.

message 27: by Wallace (new)

Wallace | 303 comments Mod
Okay, good to know. :)

message 28: by Zoe (new)

Zoe | 113 comments I'm about 150 pages into The Passage and it is sooooooooooo good!!!!!!!!! All the hype was true. I was a little worried I would have too high of expectations of it from all that I had been hearing and would be dissappointed. That is not the case AT ALL!

message 29: by Zoe (new)

Zoe | 113 comments I also just got Mockingjay and checked out The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest from the library. It's gonna be a great couple of weeks of reading!!!!!!

message 30: by Nadia (new)

Nadia A (bagambo) Zoe, The Passage rocks! Can't wait to find out what you thought of it. Its just such a fun book and even though its about vampires, it really isn't. Enjoy!

message 31: by Wallace (new)

Wallace | 303 comments Mod
Seriously, Zoe... you will be lost in books for the next week (I'm predicting that's the amount of time you'll need to finish all three of those considering you are the Tazmanian Devil of reading). ;)

Looks like a fun list! I have Mockingjay and Hornet's Nest on mine too, but have to read the second books in each series first.

message 32: by Zoe (last edited Sep 03, 2010 05:59PM) (new)

Zoe | 113 comments Finished The Passage! LOVED the first part of the book. I thought some parts in the middle lagged a little bit but it picked up in the end. At first I was sooooo dissappointed in the ending, I had so many unanswered questions! Then I remembered it is the first book of 3. I'm curious to see where the next book will start at. Now on to The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest :)

message 33: by Zoe (new)

Zoe | 113 comments I'm only 35 pages into Never Let Me Go and I am enthralled with it! Hope it continues to be this interesting and suspensefull.

message 34: by Zoe (new)

Zoe | 113 comments I finished Never Let Me Go and I absolutely loved it!!! I just thought it was perfect. So piognant, I just really felt for the main characters in the book. The scene with Kathy H. listening to her song, that really affected me. I think this might be one of my most favorite books ever. Of course, I love sci-fi(although I really think it can be classified as that in only the loosest of terms), books set in England, and books about boarding schools, so I pretty much knew I was going to love it as soon as I opened the cover.

Zoe...what did you end up thinking of Wuthering Heights? I read it finally because I felt I "had" to....I agree...why so hyped? I never ended up really caring for or about the nasty characters....while I liked it ok...3 stars....it will never go down as a fav for me.

I need to read this.

message 37: by Zoe (new)

Zoe | 113 comments Shelli - I HATED Wuthering Heights, start to finish! I have no clue what the hype is. I thought it was terrible. :)

message 38: by Zoe (last edited Nov 14, 2010 10:41AM) (new)

Zoe | 113 comments These are the books sitting on my nightstand that I intend to read before buying any other books (gettting books from PBS as they become available is an exception, though!):

Brother Odd (reading now)
The Book Thief
The Many Lives & Secret Sorrows of Josephine B.
A Clash of Kings
Big Boned

message 39: by LemonLinda (new)

LemonLinda (lwilliamson0423) Zoe, I loved The Book Thief and then read I Am the Messenger also by Markus Zusak. Both are very creative and amazing books, but I think I liked I am the Messenger even more than The Book Thief.

message 40: by Nadia (new)

Nadia A (bagambo) Zoe, The Book Thief is awesome! I love that book! It is one of my favorites! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

message 41: by Zoe (new)

Zoe | 113 comments Well, I broke my rule. I bought
Room for book club, read it in about 28 hours and loved it. I also bought
Star Islandbecause I was able to get it for 30% off! I'm still going to try and read the books that I've had for awhile first, but it's going to be hard, I love Carl Hiaasen!!!

message 42: by Zoe (new)

Zoe | 113 comments Broke my rule again! I bought Full Dark, No Starsand am going to read it as soon as I finish A Clash of Kings. I just love Stephen King!

I'm jealous! I almost bought it yesterday but held off.
