Yeah, I loved Matilda the best too! Especially the part where she uses her powers to take down the Trunchbull!
My favorite is The BFG and The Witches - some months ago- I went on a Roald Dahl buying spree- purchasing 11 of his books including his collection of short stories geared to adult readers- I really love his writing style and the Thurbereque illustrations!I must say that they are a bit hard to read after doing some research on Dahl- true he played a key role in nursing his wife Patricia Neal back to health after her terrible stroke- but I was unaware of the truly hidious anti-semitism he not only believed in but was quite happy to say horrible things about Jews outload as well as in print-
In 1983 Dahl reviewed Tony Clifton's God Cried, a picture book about the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon depicting Israelis killing thousands of Beirut inhabitants by bombing civilian targets. Dahl's review stated that this invasion was when "we all started hating Israel", and that the book would make readers "violently anti-Israeli", writing, "I am not anti-Semitic. I am anti-Israel."[37:] Dahl told a reporter in 1983, "There’s a trait in the Jewish character that does provoke animosity ... I mean there is always a reason why anti-anything crops up anywhere; even a stinker like Hitler didn’t just pick on them for no reason."

Hmmm... I haven't read The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me. I'll have to check that book out!

Thanks!!! :D
I read all the novels of him and finished almost all his short stories. i just dont know how to say in words how crazy i am for him. his stories are so damnn good. its just amazing how roald dahl could think of such ideas.
I recently purchased the 15 book box set of Dahl books with Blake illustrations. Am reading them all. I'm currently reading Charlie and the Glass Elevator, which I never read as a child. It's even more absurd than usual. What I like most about Dahl is that his lines drip with a delight for story. I find this in his kids' books and his adult books too.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has to be my favorite. I know everybody loves this book, and how can you not? My favorite part is the name of the candies and those absurd rooms. I couldn't read his books as a child as well, and I so wish that I could. They weren't available at all here back then, but every child should read these books. Really, it'll open up a whole new world for them!
=)
My favorite book has to be Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I must've read it like... 60 times LOLThe Witches is extremely good as well (second favorite Roald Dahl book), same goes with Matilda (third favorite).
I would recommend reading Fantastic Mr. Fox and Danny the Champion of the World.
I've started reading Roald Dahl rather late in life so naturally I read "Matilda".... loved it. (I' still in her "spell"!)So I'm wondering... what would be the next Roald Dahl book to read that maintains some of the spirit of "Matilda" ?
How about some of his collections?
The spirit of Matilda - a child who bonds with an adult, with the child's genius being noticed and rewarded by the adult? You could try Danny the Champion of the World. It's an earlier book, while Matilda is his last, but it's got some of the same touching elements. His short story collections are a different beast altogether. They are wonderful, but they're not for kids. They have sex and gore in them. A great collection is The Best of Roald Dahl (Vintage), but any collection of his does the trick.
