LemonLinda (lwilliamson0423) The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield - a great book for book lovers.

This is the first book in Sue Grafton's "alphabet" series. They are terrific!

I don't like mysteries, usually. This kept my attention though. Its the third book of so far 3 books. It was the first I read. Now I'm reading the first which is called Heartsick and is pretty good so far!

Zoe | 113 comments I love that series Raymond! I've read the first two and am waiting for the third from PBS.

Me too! For some reason, Chelsea Cain is changing my mind on mysteries and thrillers. After the third book I went ahead and read the first one to see how she started the series (Heartsick) and I loved that one too! So sometime in the near future I'm hoping to read Sweetheart. I love how clever Cain makes Gretchen Lowell!

Zoe and Raymond -- is this a super scary series? If not, I'm going to have to look into it... you guys are making me curious.

Zoe | 113 comments Oh no hon, this series is NOT for you! It's creepy and gory. The alphabet series is not though! I think you'd like that one.

Lol, glad you already know about my tastes to help me out :)

Did you end up reading The Passage? When/if you do will you please rate the scary factor? I've gotten both sides of the coin on that one (I can't remember if we've discussed that one).

message 10: by Zoe (new)

Zoe | 113 comments I haven't read it yet, but I definitely will in the next few months! I'll let you know how it is. I've heard it compared to Stephen King's The Stand a lot, which is one of my favorite books, so I am SUPER excited to get my hands on a copy!!!

What's the alphabet series about?

Zoe | 113 comments A female PI. The first is 'A is for Alibi', second is 'B is for Burgular', etc., which is why it's referred to as The Alphabet Series. She's currently working on 'V is for...', I think

Carin I like Tony Hillerman's mysteries. They are quick, fun, and expose me to a little Native American culture (and remind me of home in the process).

LemonLinda (lwilliamson0423) A great classic mystery is The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins. I read that one last year and loved it.

Gwen - Chew & Digest Books - (cybergwen) Sue Grafton's Alphabet series are great mysteries for the faint at heart and I am not saying that because of my partiality for local authors. I swear.

Personally, my heart goes pitter patter for more noir style crime/mystery authors like Mark Billingham, Michael Collins, Elizabeth George, & Jo Nesbo. Life is messy and often the guilty don't get the punishment we would like....

All 3 books were great!

Melissa Harris Great thread! I always enjoy a good mystery and there are lots of ideas here. Thanks all!

PDXReader I've been really enjoying Louise Penny's Three Pines/Inspector Gamache series, starting with Still Life. The second book was even better than the first, and the rest of the series is highly recommended as well. She reminds me of a modern-day Agatha Christie, with Armand Gamache similar to Poirot -- but with her own Canadian slant on things, which make her writing unique.
