Does The Hunger Games count in this category?
The Hunger Games (Hunger Games, #1) by Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games

LemonLinda (lwilliamson0423) Wallace, I would definitely put The Hunger Games in scifi/fantasy and would add the second in that series - Catching Fire.

Raymond (byraymondarturo) | 16 comments I haven't read that much sci-fi, that I am aware of. But one of the only books I have read in this genre is Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke. And that was some good stuff. :D Gave me a good first impression of the sci-fi genre. I've actually been meaning to read another of Clarke's books.

Nadia A (bagambo) The only sci-fi writer that popped in my head was Ursula Le Guin (is that even how you spell her name?). I had to read a book by her for a fantasty fiction course I took one year. Sci-fi is not normally my cup of tea, but I did enjoy The Hitchhiker's Guide and Slaughterhouse-Five - those were rather intriguing books.

I want to read Ursula Le Guin. Have you seen The Jane Austen Book Club? Those are the books that Grigg recommends to Jocelyn (not sure if he does that in the book, because I actually haven't read it).

I think The Hunger Games is fantasy...not science fiction.

I HIGHLY recommend Dan Simmons Hyperion Cantos for sci-fi. Best I've read so far!

Those are the books he recommends. I read Left Hand of Darkness based on his recommendation in the movie. It was pretty good, but it's also not the first book in that series (although it did well as a stand-alone I think). The book, The Jane Austen Book Club was terrible. Bleh...the movie was more enjoyable.

I LOVED "Ilium" by Dan Simmons. Seriously, if you like "Hyperion" you've got to read Ilium. It's like historical fiction and sci fi got together and had a baby.... mind blowing.

Ti (bookchatter) | 13 comments I don't read much sci-fi but I am reading Mockingjay (along with the rest of the world) and I suppose that could be considered sci-fi or dystopian. I think as a rule though I lean more towards dystopian, rather than sci-fi but the lines are so blurry these days.

message 11: by LemonLinda (new)

LemonLinda (lwilliamson0423) I am now reading Mockingjay as well. It has not caught me as quickly as the first two in the series.

Carin - I want to try Ursula some day... might have to have you golding my hand though, haha!

LemonLinda-- I am hearing that from several people. I have to read the second one still, so can't weigh in... but plenty of people have said it doesn't pick up until the end.

I recommend starting off with the Earthsea series rather than Left Hand of Darkness. They are shorter and a little more accessible. Left Hand of Darkness is pretty hard core literary sci-fi.

Carin, I've never read any Ursula... would you recommend the Left Hand of Darkness for me?

Absolutely! I think you would love it. I think the book works as a stand alone, but it's part of a series so you may want to start at the beginning. I actually think you would enjoy the Earthsea series as well. LeGuin is a fantastic writer. Very literary and has really interesting ideas.
