Elizabeth | 9 comments 'The God Delusion' by Richard Dawkins. I've been looking at this book on my shelf for about 3 months now.

Yay! I think we can officially call 2 people a group. The Dawkins book looks interesting--I've read reviews. There've been a lot of books on atheism lately. The Hitchens one looks interesting too--he's annoying but I can't stop reading his essays on Slate.

What is today, Tuesday? Should we wait til Sat. and see if anyone else joins us?

message 3: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth | 9 comments :) I agree. We are a bonafide group. What the Hithcens' book you're referring to?

I just added it to the bookshelf (just to show...not a must-read)

Sineadm | 15 comments Hello, I was drawn in by the title of the group.....hope I won't regret it.

DROP AND GIVE ME 50!

Just kidding. I hope you don't regret it either.

Why don't we do this...let's each add a couple of nonfiction choices to the bookshelf, then we'll choose this weekend.

message 7: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth | 9 comments Have we decided on a book yet? I vote for 'The God Delusion' by Richard Dawkins.

Laurie (lauriea) | 73 comments Mod
I'm good with that. How about The God Delusion for July, and An Eater's Manifesto for August? That'll set us up for the summer. Maybe we'll pick up some extra people along the way.

I'll post this schedule, and maybe look around at some of the other groups to see what they do as they read.

Elizabeth | 9 comments Sounds good to me. I'm so excited!

message 10: by Debbie (new)

Debbie | 4 comments Hi everyone, I'm Debbie and I'm a book addict...
Just joined today, who could resist with a name like this! Finally others who actually like non-fiction books :) I've never heard of the God delusion, but sounds interesting. I finished "In defense of food" by michael pollan-that might be one to think about in the future. I'm buying the book on my way home tonight! Can't wait to chat more about books, what a great website...

Our group is growing...this is great! I ordered the Dawkins book from Amazon this morning. We can easily change the Pollan book to something else--we're so small there shouldn't be a problem finding something we all haven't read that we all want to read.

Add books to the shelf, and we'll negotiate the August pick.

Bring your friends! Because mine won't come!

message 12: by Debbie (new)

Debbie | 4 comments The pollan book is so good, we should read it anyway! I believe it's one of those books everyone needs to read....I have a feeling whatever we pick will be awesome :) I went to a bookstore to get the Dawkins book and got there one minute after they closed early for a book reading. Last name Sedaris and I didn't know the author. I would of went just to find out, but was busy :( Talk to you all soon!
Deb

Sineadm | 15 comments Hello,

Lucky me, I have the Dawkins book already, my boyfriend borrowed it from someone ages ago but its just been gathering dust so I'm all set to go. Its a miserable rainy day here - perfect for reading by the fire.

I'll get on and put some suggestions on the bookshelf too.

Sinead

Dao (dao1) | 2 comments Hi Laurie,

I'm here!! It took some time to get over the terrible Canadian joke... :D

Let the discussions begin! Looking forward to it.

Dao

Hmmmm. I'm still waiting on the book from Amazon. Maybe it'll come this weekend and give me an excuse not to clean the house.

I will set up a new thread for it though. I'm excited that we're up to 6 people! (5 + 1 Canadian)

ps: Hi Dao and Fran!

Fran | 20 comments Hi Laurie--
I love to read but am not real tech-savvy. So I hope I do all the Goodreads group stuff right. I am glad to be in your group. Fran

Now that we're up to 8 people, do we want to vote on another book for August? We've got one vote for Nim Chimpsky and my suggestion for In Defense of Food. Let me know by next weekend (7/19) if you have a preference or want to suggest another title.

message 20: by Debbie (new)

Debbie | 4 comments One book I almost forgot about was "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle". I don't remember the author but is in the similar vein as Michael Pollans 'In defense of food'. I'm enjoying the dawkins book alot. Hope you all are too.
Debbie

message 21: by Sue (new)

Sue (suer) The author is Barbara Kingsolver and it is a wonderful book. 'In Defense of Food' would go with it - perhaps one month read one book, and then the next the other?

message 22: by Laurie (new)

Laurie (lauriea) | 73 comments Mod
It looks like next month it will be a food book...either In Defense of Food or Animal, Vegetable, Mineral. Having read neither, the sound very similar, although maybe Pollan is more policy and Kingsolver more personal? I don't know...just a guess.

Laurie (lauriea) | 73 comments Mod
I guess we'll keep the Pollan book for August...I'll post a note on the main page.

message 24: by Sineadm (new)

Sineadm | 15 comments Not sure where to put suggestions for next books but thought that after the debates on God and food a Biography would diversify the mix a little. No specific suggestion from me, there is a weighty tome about Chairman Mao waiting on my bookshelf but not sure I'm ready for that yet.

I like the biography idea. I watched Sophia Coppola's Marie Antoinette the other night and thought it might be interesting to read the bio it was based on--I think it's by Antonia Fraser. Or we could go trashy and read the new book about Madonna written by her brother.
