Ava stared around at the landscape, studying the light after glow of Afterlights. She walked around slowly, as if in a daze, taking everything in.

Kayla saw a girl walking around. She must've just woken up from Interlight sleep - she hadn't seen her here before. Kayla ran up to her and smiled brightly. "Hi! Welcome to Everlost! You are in my hometown of Austin Texas, in an old forest that crossed over. What's your name?"

Ava jumped with surprise at a voice, eyes wide. She turned and blinked once to clear her thoughts and focus her view. She smiled at the girl's friendliness, "Hi, I'm Ava. Texas? That's cool! Everlost? That's a curious name...who're you?"

"My name is Kayla. You do... do you know about Everlost?" She looked sheepish and apologetic. She hoped the other girl wasn't intimidated, even if Kayla was wearing a ball gown dress.

Ava shook her head. "No, isn't this a dream? I was biking and then I..." she paused, memory a bit foggy, "...I fell." She furrowed her brow in confusion, "I thought I just woke up and I found all this and it's like a dream."

"No, it's not a dream. You're... well, you're dead." She looked really apologetic now. "When you fell you must have died. You were supposed to go into the light at the end of the tunnel, but for some reason you didn't. You're in Everlost now."

Ava frowned. "Everlost..." she murmured as of tasting the word. Did this mean she was lost forever? She had accepted that fact that she was dead now, there was nothing she could do. But Everlost...the light at the end of the tunnel..."Okay. What am I supposed to do now?"

"Well, you and I aren't the only ones. A lot of kids get stuck here. I can introduce you to everybody around here... you just have to get used to everything now, pretty much. You may be able to leave eventually." She took the new girl's hand and pulled her around. "Hey... Do you know if you can skinjack or ecto-rip anything?"

Ava was bewildered at the words. "Skinjack? Ecto-rip?" She had her eyebrows raised skeptically. Her eyes were wide, she felt overwhelmed with it all.

"Oh, that's right, you just finished being an Interlight. Can you--" she stopped to explain Interlight. "You died exactly 9 months ago, and slept for 9 months. That was when you were an Interlight. Now you're an Afterlight. Skinjacking is when you can take control of a fleshie, Nd ectoripping is..." she paused. "Nevermind. I'll tell you later. Now, ask me anything."

Ava waited for a moment before speaking. Her thoughts whizzed around in her mind. She shook her head to clear, only to make it worse. She took a deep, calming breath. "Where is everyone?"

"What do you mean, everyone. All the other Afterlights, or your family?" For once, Kayla was co fused with a newcomer. "Or the living?"

"Oh, I'm sorry. I meant the other Afterlights," Ava explained. She spotted someone and their glow she stepped back, "Who is that?"

Kayla turned and looked. "Oh, that's Courtney. Been here since the 1800s. She keeps to herself a lot. The other Afterlights are just scattered - we're in the middle of an Everlost forest. Go to some cities and you'll find more Afterlights."

Ava took another step back, intimidated. She gave Kayla a slight nod. "Hi Courtney."

"So, any other questions? You're a lot quieter than the normal newbies. Were you this quiet as a fleshie?"

Ava decided that a fleshie was a living human. "No, I wasn't."

"Hmm. So, any more questions? You must be pretty curious."

Ava nodded, "Can I see my family?" She stepped back again.

Kayla smiled. "Hey, look. Courtney's decding to say hi. Hey, Courtney, this is Ava." Then she answerd Ava's question. "That might not be such a good idea... When I have more time I'll tell you why."

Happy looked around nervously.

Avan gave her a dazed nod. She forced a smile at Courtney. "What do you do for fun?"

Happy saw all the girls and frowned. There were no boys around.

While they were talking, Kayla went over to Happy. "Another newbie! C'mere." she grabbed the new virl's hand and pulled her back to Courtney and Ava. "Courtney, these two both need an orientation. Wanna help me?"

"Ummmmm..." happy wasn't very happy about her pulling him towards all the girls ((he's aboy...))

"Oh, that's not true, Courtney. Remeber that one boy? And I talk to you sometimes."

"Nice to meet you too." No fun? Ava was prepared to say no to the orientation, but commonsense told her otherwise. She needed to learn about this world. Everlost. She still had toms more questions. "Kayla, what is ecto-ripping?" she asked.

Happy backed away

She turned to the new boy. "Hey, what's your name?"

"H-h-h-happy" he replied

"Well, you don't seem very happy." she frowned. "There Re more boys around, I promise."

"Where?"' he asked, now brightened.

"Hi Happy," Ava said with another smile, glad she wasn't the only new one. He was nervous, she could tell. Scaredy-cat. Ava saw him change and smiled again.

"Which one?" he asked.

"Is he still here?" Ava asked, a bit darkly.

Kayla kept looking at Happy but replied to Ava. "Its when you can punch a hole in the portal between here and the living world and rip things out and bring them here. I can't do it, but Mason can, you'll meet him later. A BOY," she added for Happy.

"Yeah?" Happy asked.

"I don't know where he went."

Ava was interested with all this new information. She wanted to meet Mason. NOW. "Alright," was her simple answer. "Is there like, a grown up here?" she asked timidly.

"Oh." Happy looked sad again.

"It was 1985, Courtney."

Ava's eyes widened with curiosity and fear. "Does you memory go away the longer you stay?"

"Oh wow..." Happy started to walk away.

"Nope. Only kids in Everlost... No older that 17. And Happy, Mason is still here, I was talking about the other boy. You guys can meet him later, he's a night person."

Happy kept backing away slowly.

"Oh, good." Ava smiled at the fact. Maybe she could ecto-rip too.

"Happy, stay here please." Despite being small and in a wedding dress, her voice was commanding.

Ava turned to Courtney for a moment when she stopped talking. "No one's gonna hurt you. It'll be harder out alone there," she advised Happy.
