When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead

This was a very interesting, intriguing book. Juvenile fiction, so not a lot for a parent to be concerned about here. The only thing I could see is there was some bullying. It didn't predominate, but it was there. The story takes place in New York City, and the kids walk back and forth to school, so they run into some crazies along the way too.

Some topics that may come up include: friendship and love, how small and big things you do cause a ripple effect for yourself and others in ways you can't imagine sometimes, how people aren't always who and what they seem/don't judge a book by its cover. Some good stuff for discussion here!

I think When you Reach Me would be a WONDERFUL book for parents and kids to read together OR to teach in a classroom, because it not only has some great themes, but it has a mystery that you have to figure out.

It really would make a great book to teach Kellee, I agree!

I think it would be good for reluctant readers too because it really draws you in from the beginning.

And I think it is a book that some students wouldn't pick up on their own, but is so worth reading; so, with teaching, the teacher can help the students.

I've thought about rereading it as well. Yeah great idea for classrooms, pairing a classic with a Newbery winner.

I loved this book. I thought it was brilliant. I loved that the story was complex enough to entertain and interest an adult, but still simple enough that a younger kid would be able to keep up as well.

This is one of my favorite reads for this year. So good!

When I read this book a couple of months ago I did enjoy it. I am planning to give my copy to my fifth grade son to read as soon as he gets through a few more books for "Summer Reading."
