Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) Borders.com now has ebooks, too. Between now and July 14th, they're giving away Prodigal Son by Dean Koontz (the first in his Frankenstein series), One Shot by Lee Child, The Alchemyst by Michael Scott, Julia's Kitchen Wisdom: Essential Techniques and Recipes from a Lifetime of Cooking by Julia Child, and Master Your Metabolism: The 3 Diet Secrets to Naturally Balancing Your Hormones for a Hot and Healthy Body! by Jillian Michaels.

The books are in epub format and download into Adobe Digital Editions. I haven't put them on my Nook, yet, but I haven't had any trouble with ADE before so I'm guessing it'll work.

One nice thing about Borders is that some ebooks can still accrue Borders Bucks (but not all). On the page for the ebook, under details, it will tell you whether or not rewards are available (if it doesn't say "Sorry, no discounts or Rewards on this eBook", then they're available). Essentially, any book that's not published by one of the Agency 5 you can get reward points for and Borders can discount the ebook if they want to.

Scott | 292 comments Thanks. I had two of these on my ebook wish list.

Dorie (dorieann) Yay for free books! Thanks for posting the book list, I'll have to download a couple of these.

Nathan Henrion works great!

Anyone know how to search through all the freebies they have? A lot of rubbish...do they have a specials page? All the PD stuff is listed too.

message 5: by Nathan (new)

Nathan Henrion never mind...I see the "Free for a Limited Time" button now

Hmmm. . . I can't seem to find "Free for a Limited Time" on their site. When I search the books directly, they are not listed as free. Is the promotion over :(

message 8: by Kristina Simon (new)

Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) Huh. The e-mail they sent me said they'd be free through the 14th, but you're right. When I search the site, they are MUCH more expensive than free now (one of them is like $26??). I even tried going back to the e-mail and click through from there in case it made a difference, but it didn't. Glad I got mine the first day, sheesh! Sorry you guys.

Dorie (dorieann) Apparently the offer still stands, you just have to download their ereader software first. Then it pulls up the store and you see the free book offers from there. I was able to pull these up but when I tried to order it said it couldn't process the order. Didn't give a reason. I'll try again later, maybe it just has some bugs in the system.

Lori {Romancing the Dark Side} (romancingthedarkside) I also got the same error message Dorie. I don't know what's going on. Maybe too many people are on the site, I'll try it again later. :(

message 11: by Theresa (new)

Theresa (tweezle) I had to sign in first to see them. There is a link on the left hand side for the free books. It's down a little. Make sure you are in the ebook section before looking for the link.

HTH

I downloaded the ereader software, can pull up the books now, but when I try to get them, also get the message "your order cannot be processed. Try again later." Has anyone been able to purchase/get them in the last 28 hours or so?

Dorie (dorieann) Thanks Theresa, that worked for me! Angela, try signing in to your account on the Borders web site. Click on the 'Ebooks' tab. On the left will be a link for 'Free for a limited time'. You should be able to see and download the free titles there, but only if you're signed in first. Good luck!

Lori {Romancing the Dark Side} (romancingthedarkside) I just tried to download one and was able to but it won't update in my library. There might be some problems with the software. This totally sucks!

Thanks Dorie and Theresa! I had tried downloading them through the borders desktop reader, but it would constantly give me that error message. Your directions worked. I just went directly to the Border's site, signed in, went to the ebooks section, found the "free limited time only" link at the bottom of the list on the left, and it pulled up the books. Then I chose "add to library", and it asked if I wanted to open it through my Adobe Digital Editions software. Once I said "yes", it downloaded! When I tried to update my Borders library, I still got the error message, but as long as I know that it's in my Adobe Digital Editions software, I know I'll be able to sideload it to the nook, now.

I have a feeling Borders has a few kinks to work out yet, but I'm happy to have these books! Thanks for the help.

Dorie (dorieann) I had the same trouble last night, Angela but it updated okay today and the books are all showing on my bookshelf now. I think Borders' servers are probably being overloaded at times. So keep trying!

message 17: by Danielle (new)

Danielle (xxbadkarmaxx) | 6 comments I thought I was the only person who was having trouble with the borders reader!! I guess it was just a problem with their system yesterday because I tried to no avail to download a book but kept getting the error message. I tried again this afternoon and was successful. Though their books are very expensive, I'll stick with B&N or get them for free at the library!!
