I think it was a really neat story.

message 4: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid The first time I read it I didn't like it much. I couldn't get into it. The second time... I loved it. I don't know what changed but I thought it was amazing.

I love how it was based off of Nomadic and Mongolian Culture. The world is amazing too!

message 6: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid It was so different from Bayern, Tira, or Kildenree. It was different yet really enthralling and interesting. Dasha was an amazing protagonist.

message 7: by RedPath, The worst Mod. EVER. (new)

RedPath | 850 comments Mod
The main character is Dashti :)

message 8: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid Ah! I know that. I just got the names mixed up. ARGH! Dasha is awesome and Dashti is also wonderful. In this instance it was Dashti.

I like the name Dashti. So cool!

message 10: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Harmon (mandyharmon) I loved this one. It's one of my favorites.

message 11: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid I just reread it, and I found myself disliking it this time. The characters irked me. Dashti and Tegus especially. Saren, despite her skittishness, was my favorite.

message 12: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Harmon (mandyharmon) The first time I read it, I disliked it, but the second time, I liked it. =P

LOL. It's good.

message 14: by Katerina (new)

Katerina (klymene) | 1209 comments I liked it. It was very different from the other books that Hale's written. It was a little confusing at first, though. It was frusterating how easily Dashti got pulled in to service.

message 15: by Emily (new)

Emily I loved how Shannon developed the culture of the people.

message 16: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid It isn't the difference in writing style, necessarily. The characters just didn't seem real to me. They didn't seem believable. Except for Saren, but she was annoying.

RedPath | 850 comments Mod
-shrug- Well, the way Dashti was raised gave her a different mentality than from most of the main characters in her books. She's a bit naive, but that's because she grew up like that. To her, thing were black and white, either right or wrong, good or bad. And she had to learn that things aren't always like that.

Ditto on the Saren Part, but she turned out alright

message 19: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid She was the only character that I liked in the end.

I think BOATD was good. It's not my favorite by her but it was and enjoyable read. Enough that I re read a while later. I think Saren was okay, but stupid. I did not like Saren very much. Dashti on the other hand was interesting. I don't really have a favorite, but if I had to pick one probably her or that Khan (right title?)

message 21: by Emily (new)

Emily I like the one that turns into a wolf heh heh heh. (btw I'm kinda tired right now... if you couldn't tell...)

message 22: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid Dashti was too perfect. Unrealistic. Uninteresting. No Personality.

message 23: by Emily (new)

Emily Yeah, I know what you mean.

message 24: by Hannah, Bek and Red are depressing: BEST mod ever. (new)

Hannah | 2744 comments Mod
True. I guess I odn't hink to much about characters. I guess thinking more about it, I didn't really have a favorite. That wolf guy was weird.

message 25: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid I have a problem: I am a writing fanatic who is obsessed with realistic characterization. It ruins many books that I once loved. *Sigh*

message 26: by RedPath, The worst Mod. EVER. (new)

RedPath | 850 comments Mod
I didn't think Dashti was perfect.

message 27: by Emily (new)

Emily whoa *head palm* I read it wrong. I thought we were talking about Dasha! I'm confuzzled. Yeah, I didn't think Dashti was perfect, either.

message 28: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid She wasn't completely perfect, but too perfect to be an interesting character.

-shrug- She seemed naive and simple-minded to me. And since the book was in 3rd person...

message 30: by Katerina (new)

Katerina (klymene) | 1209 comments I thought it was in first

message 31: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid It was a diary, so yes, it was in first.

I hate books written like that (generally) but i didn't mind this ALL that much. just....the characters weren't that developed.

message 33: by RedPath, The worst Mod. EVER. (new)

RedPath | 850 comments Mod
MY BRAIN WAS DEAD T-T

I meant 1st person.

And character development is harder in first person.

message 34: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid I just prefer third person in general. It isn't necessarily Shannon. *Shrugs*

message 35: by Katerina (new)

Katerina (klymene) | 1209 comments Tamora Pierce is much better in 3rd than in 1st, just saying. I know it's kinda irrelivant

message 36: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid I am a big fan of characterization and if something has a tendency to diminish character development... Not going to approve.

I think all the different POV's are interesting. I can't say which is my favorite. I've never thought that much about it.

But I really like 3rd, because sometimes you can see the Bad guys plan and wonder how it will all work together. there are also disadvantages to it. For ex. sometimes writers will split up the story into TONS of people's perspectives and it get's really annoying that you keep switching. I could give examples

1st is also cool because you don't know what's gonna happen and there can be suspense.
like I said all are good. :D

I actually kind of like the rotating narration. I'm doing that with my book. Rotating between three siblings.

Some rotating narration is fine- like Rick Riordan has started to do in his Kane Chronicles and Heroes of Olympus series', but that's by chapter- it gets annoying when it happens two or three times within a chapter.

message 40: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid Ah yes. That would be annoying.

Yes, I know. But I've read books with like 5 OR MORE. It does get annoying if there are THAT MANY.

Exactly. I read Red Riding Hood ( Red Riding Hood by Sarah Blakley-Cartwright ) and it did that fairly often.

The Alchemyst That series got to the point of TONS!

Into the Land of the Unicorns Not so bad at the beginning but by the last book there were definatly a whole bunch of skips. Annoying.
