Alexa Adams' First Impressions takes an enjoyable turn on the Pride & Prejudice plot without sacrificing the attraction, wit, and brains of the original characters. There is no risk of over-drama and this version gives us a chance to see how many of the characters could have made a different choice from the original story. You might be surprised to find even Lady Catherine sharing her thoughts on the unfolding romance of her favorite nephew.

This book really just makes me smile. Rather than a twist, I would call it a reblend using a good recipe and Austen-style storytelling.

Join in the discussion in this thread if you have a chance to pick up the book sometime in the near future.

Patricia Gulley Lady Catherine's thoughts were fun, but I put this book down. Rehashes of the story are different IMHO than sequels.
I picked up Old Friends and New Fancies. Supposedly--it is advertised this way--the first Austen sequel written in 1913.
So far, so good.

Hey, Patg! You are right, with a sequel or continuation, you know you will get somewhat of a different story where some new plot will be playing out. I like to check these out too, but then the question is plausibility -- do the lives of the original characters live up to expectations?

And as for the retellings, some are just too closely done to the original story. They interest me though, so I keep investigating them a little and do like when the authors seem to be real devotees of Austen and respectful of Austen as so many readers are.

I know I read part of Old Friends, but never finished it. Give us a quick review when you can.

Thanks for the quick review Sarah--I will keep my eye out for it at the library. I haven't read a "re-telling" of an Austen story yet, so this sounds like it would be a fun and light read.

Patricia Gulley An interesting Blog suggestion came from my local JASNA group. The lady is from Vancouver BC. I thought she was from Vancouver WA, but the blog about her time in Chawton is very interesting.

Patricia Gulley Every year I get the general group tour thing from JASNA to go. I never do it. A retired travel agent is not good on tour. But it always reminds me how much I want to tour the places our Dear Jane inhabited. The pictures on this blog are very helpful.
For me the perfect tour would be 7 days, 1/2 Agatha Cristie and 1/2 Jane Austen. Then another week in London for the Lanes, theater and brousing.
