What would be some photos that would make a great book cover you could make yourself?

Lynn did you get to choose the cover or did the publishing company do it for you?
Here's a book cover I made for the book I'm currently working on: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_wgVSDgwdBUs...Even though the mermaid on the front doesn't look quite like the mermaid in my story, it was the best I could find. :)

I am indi-published, which means I have a lot of control over all things. This can be good and bad. My first cover was a total failure - I thought black and white would help it stand out from all the dark books on the shelf. It didn't - the book just faded into the background.
I met one of Tor's premier cover artist at a convention. He took one look at my book and had took pity on me. After going over what the book was about, he suggested a cover template. I found an art student online and had him draw what we had designed. I now have a theme for all five books in the series!
