Nancy | 2838 comments We're now accepting nominations for August - September.

Please read the rules for nominating BEFORE you create your post!! And check our bookshelves to be sure you are not nominating something we have already read as a group!

We will have one category this month:
Cat1- LGBT Fiction/Non-Fiction

Only ONE nomination per person.

Please be sure to post the title and author.

I would like to suggest a book that's already on my to-read shelf:

The World of Normal Boys, by K.M. Soehnlein

From what I can see on other people's ratings and reviews, it seems like a good piece of literature.

Paul Jr. (paulgbensjr) | 144 comments Because I think it is a brilliant book that I want everyone in the world to read, I suggest Letters to Montgomery Clift by Noel Alumit.

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

Letter to Montgomery sure seems like great reading. Hey Nancy, what about your suggestion?

message 5: by Nancy (new)

Nancy | 2838 comments Black Girl in Paris by Shay Youngblood

It sounds great, and I'm dying to visit Paris again!

Oh, this looks very good.

This is the book that actually made me go "OK...get off your ass, Paul, and write a novel."

Hey guys, where is everyone?

For the time being we only have three of us discussing what will be our future group reading and so far we have three suggestions that seem quite good.

Nancy, do we have a deadline to choose a book for group reading?

I must say, though, that I'm about to purchase both Paul's suggestion and yours, since both are pretty good.

message 9: by Nancy (new)

Nancy | 2838 comments I'll take nominations until Thursday, then I'll set up the poll.

All three suggestions sound great!

The only one I'll have to buy is Letters to Montgomery Clift

I was confused by "Cat1- LGBT Fiction/Non-Fiction ". Which do you want Fiction, non-fiction or either?

If fiction is OK I would nominate Call Me by Your Name by André Aciman

message 11: by Nancy (new)

Nancy | 2838 comments Either is good.

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey Kernos, your suggestion is also pretty good!

I'm thinking about locking myself up in my room and reading all of these four books. =P

message 13: by Nancy (new)

Nancy | 2838 comments We have four nominations:

Call Me by Your Name by André Aciman
Black Girl in Paris by Shay Youngblood
The World of Normal Boys by K.M. Soehnlein
Letters to Montgomery Clift by Noel Alumit

Should I bother with a poll, or should we just plan on reading our selections over the next 8 months?

Is two months per book enough time? I know it can take some time finding books, particularly for our international members.

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey Nancy, I'm fine with these four books for the next months.

I also am fine with two books a month. I don't know about the others.

I would be glad if we could start with The World of Normal Boys and something else though, as it would give me more time to purchase the other three.

But then, as I said, let's see what the majority thinks.

I'm good with whatever is most convenient for y'all. =-)

Two books a month is OK with me too. Should we nominate four more titles, or just use the selections we have for the next four months?

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

Nancy wrote: "Two books a month is OK with me too. Should we nominate four more titles, or just use the selections we have for the next four months?"

Well, in my opinion we could start with what we already have selected. Then, as the time goes, maybe more people will join us and suggest more books, as well as we also would have some more time to think about other good titles to read.

Another thing is: I can keep up with two books a month, I don't know about you guys. Will we read two of them each month, or only one? What books should we start with?

message 18: by Paul (new)

Paul Jr. (paulgbensjr) | 144 comments Knowing my schedule and how I am, I'm probably only good for 1 book a month. I read really, really slowly. =-)

And I'd suggest starting with the one the majority already has in their possession. I have none (other than Letters to Montgomery CLift which I've already read anyway), but can pick up e-versions or hard covers pretty easily.

message 19: by Nancy (last edited Jul 23, 2010 06:16AM) (new)

Nancy | 2838 comments Letters to Montgomery Clift is the only book I don't have.

How about if we start with The World of Normal Boys and Call Me by Your Name for August/September and Black Girl in Paris and Letters to Montgomery Clift for October/November.

Is that OK with everyone?

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

Ok, I think Nancy's suggestion is pretty good. And we could still keep the 1 book a month rate. This allows all of us to read them in a comfortable pace and still have any other parallel reading other then the group's reading.

So, what's it going to be then? The World of Normal Boys and Call Me by Your Name for August/September and Black Girl in Paris and Letters to Montgomery Clift for October/November?

That sounds perfect for me.

Great! I've updated the group's home page with next month's selections. Our previous titles can also be discussed at any time.

:-) This has been on TBR mountains for some time an I've been feeling the need to read a gay romance, as long as it is well written and "unsentimental", as this is supposed to be.

But all of these look good, and I have acquired all but one. I think reading the 4 over the next months a good idea.

I knew you'd agree, Kernos, so I took the liberty of updating the home page before waiting for your response. :)

message 24: by Scott (new)

Scott (scottmillerdc) | 92 comments I want to read world of normal boys again first!!!! Glad Nancy went with that. I typically don't suggest or get involved with selection b/c I don't know if I have the time or energy to read it (especially during the summer and with my current workload...)

Happy reading and hot, hot HOT summer to you all.
.scott.

I will finish Call Me by Your Name tonight. What a joy to read. I have also put this book in my literary-fiction shelf.

What is the procedure here to actually begin the discussion on a group read. I have not participated here before.

Later...

message 26: by Nancy (last edited Aug 02, 2010 09:30AM) (new)

Nancy | 2838 comments Sorry, Kernos. I've just added two topics for each book. If you are discussing any plot spoilers, please make sure to include it in the appropriate topic. Feel free to comment any time. There are no formal questions.

I know I have this book somewhere but have no idea where, so I'm going to borrow it from the library. I'm looking forward to your thoughts.

Joseph Longo (josephlongo) | 75 comments Hi Nancy,
I am trying to find the name of one of the books that wasn't selected. I don't remember the title, but it was about a man who is arrested for some sexual-related activity. It sounds interesting to me. Do you know the title of the book?

Joseph Longo (josephlongo) | 75 comments Thanks, Nancy, an obvious title that I should have remebered.

message 31: by Nancy (last edited Oct 02, 2010 10:16AM) (new)

Nancy | 2838 comments I'll keep a list of our recent titles and include them when we are ready to take nominations for February. It was in 4th place with six votes in the poll, so maybe it will have a better chance next time.

message 32: by Joseph (new)

Joseph Longo (josephlongo) | 75 comments I just ordered it from Amazon. I want to read it. Thanks.

Nancy | 2838 comments It looks good, doesn't it? Looking forward to your thoughts when you're done.
