Hi there! I just joined this group and thought I'd share a couple that have only been out for a couple of months that I'm interested to read.
by Ron Chernow
by Edmund MorrisI have the Washington biography but haven't started it yet. The Morris book is the third in a series, so I'd like to start with the first book and work my way up to it.
I just started Washington by Chernow. It is very good thus far and his writing style is very engaging. Enjoy!
I really enjoyed his book on Hamilton. Very detailed but with an approachable writing style. I imagine that, like with the Hamilton book, it'll take me a while to get through Washington, but it'll be an enjoyable experience.
Having read Hamilton, I was very interested in Washington, especially with the great reviews and comments I was hearing. Like Donny, I also appreciate Chernow's style. I finished it about two weeks ago and wasn't disappointed. I've loaned it to a high school student (mentee) and he's really getting into it.
Washington: A LifeI just finished reading Washington, it was my first book by Chernow and I highly recommend it. As previous reviewers have mentioned, his style is very detailed but well worth the time. I tried to just bite off 50 or so pages a night after work but found myself unable to put it down on many occasions. I highly recommend it and am looking for other Presidential Biography recommendations as well.
I just heard about a new book on Washington --
by Edward G. Lengel. They had a segment on NPR's All Things Considered where Robert Siegel talked with Lengel (located at http://www.npr.org/2011/02/21/133943644/George-Washington-Separating-Man-From-Myth in case anyone's interested). It sounds really interesting, and since Lengel is chief editor of Washington's papers, I'd think the book would provide good, informed insight into Washington and how he's been characterized over the years.
