Hopscotch Series Challenge (QUARTERLY)
I'm confused, lol, but will be in!Would it look like this? (just examples!)
Book 1 of Mercy Thompson (OK, love the series!)
Book 2 of Psy-changeling
Book 3 of Demonica
and so on up to Book 10 of Anita Blake, (Which is one possible END OF CHALLENGE)
then back down to Book 9 of breeds....on down to
Book 2 of Demonica
and finish with book 1 of Fever (Second possible END OF CHALLENGE)
Are re-reads allowed? (please!)
Sorry! Yes, that's is exactly how it would go. Order, ends, etc. You could (if you used your example) read book 2 of demonica on the way up and book 3 of demonica on the way down. Yes, I'll allow re-reads. :)
how will I be able to wait that long LOL! You can pass the time by making your list?Valorie wrote: "I'm in! I may need a reminder in October to start reading! LOL!"

Perfect! Thanks Steph!
I've created an event for this challenge. If you'd like to get a reminder 1 day prior to GO-DAY, answer 'yes' or 'maybe'.Event Info
Sorry about that. I think I jumped the gun. I answered yes to the event. I will delete my message #8, and repost it closer to October 1.
I still have it listed in my Members List, so I will just copy the info from there when the time comes.
No worries, hun. I'm probably going to post mine this weekend. Just to make a plan. We don't have to stick to it, but it'll help me plan my reading goals for the rest of the year. You're welcome to post your list at anytime. Just don't start reading until 1 Oct. :)

I have an excel spreadsheet that I use to make my reading list every single month. That's how I keep track of what I'm going to read each month and for what challenge.

I am in but I am not ready to post a list yet. I have to figure out where I am with my series by then. I expect to see some from these series if I haven't gotten to them yet: (I posted my next one to read in each series... This should help me get organized too lol)
Narnia is more fantasy than PNR but I need to get caught up because of the next movie coming out!
EXAMPLE: ( I will tweak this before the start date. )
1. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
2. The Fury and Dark Reunion
3. The Vampire Lestat
4. Vampire Academy
5. Darkfever
6. Dead and Gone
7. Night World, No. 3: Huntress, Black Dawn, Witchlight
8. Hawksong
9. The Fellowship of the Ring
10. Night Pleasures
And as for back the other way... I don't know yet LOL
Judithe wrote: "Hey Steph, we can read our list any order, right?"Hm, I was thinking in order 1-10, then, if you chose DOWN it would have to be in order 9-1.
What do you think, southpaw? Were you thinking in order or any order when you thought of it?
yes, I know, I'm goin' all Gumby again
Awww....I'll be waitin on books...lol...all the ones on it are books I'm waiting for. But, it'll be fun, and it is a challenge after all!
Well, can't have you not joinin' in on the fun, so I'll go with ... books can be read in any order, as long as you have a book for a different series for each #1-10. :)
I was out when we had to read them in order, but when I saw Steph relented in her craziness, I was in. Then I went and checked my lists and I don't have a #10. Ugh. Of course, I'm listening to the 10th Harry Dresden right now. Double ugh.
And I'm already planning on starting & finishing a 9 book fatty fatty 2x4 fantasy series before the end of the year, so don't even suggest I start another new series with 10 books--I know you were thinking it. ;)
Come on, Laura. Really, what is just one more new series (with 10 books)?! It's okay. We will help you thru it. LOL
That's what we're here for, to encourage you to try new things, and support you in your reading & challenge madness!(What new 9 book fatty fatty 2x4 fantasy series??)
LMAO!! Ya'll are seriously crackin' me up!(1) L³: My craziness? Hey, I was just going along with how I thought I remembered the game was played. LOL! But, alas, Gumby prevails again. Glad you're in!
Here are some good #10 options:
(Sookie) Dead in the Family
(Hunters) Hunter's Salvation
(WOTO) Frostbitten
(Dark/Carpathians) Dark Symphony
(Argeneau/Rogue Hntr) The Rogue Hunter
I haven't read them, but: Maggie Shayne, Sherrilyn Kenyon, LA Banks and LKH all have PNR series which are long. Maybe one of those #10s would be fine reading OOO.
I know, I know, you aren't a big PNR fan. I'll keep looking. :) If it helps any, I'm missing #8 and I realized it when I had just finished reading #8: Bonds of Justice! LOL
(2) SP, are we corrupting you too or just bringing out your wicked side? LOL! That sounds just like something I would say. Go girl! Push her! Peer Pressure! :D
(3) OMG! LMAO! Out of all that, yes, first was the support and encouragement we expect and love from Miss Judithe. But, then ... ?? what challenge ?? hehehe Challenge Goddess is on the hunt.
Judithe wrote: "That's what we're here for, to encourage you to try new things, and support you in your reading & challenge madness!"Encouraging, enabling, what's the difference? :)
Judithe wrote: "(What new 9 book fatty fatty 2x4 fantasy series??)"
My other GR friend Sandra rec'd me Janny Wurts' Wars of Light & Shadow series. We're both straight fantasy lovers and I rec'd my fave fantasy series to her, George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice & Fire series & she loved it. So when she said this series was awesome, I have to read them. Plus, I needed a series with 7 books to finish EP Odd Series Challenge. So I'll read at least the 1st 7 before the end of the year. The 9th one comes out in October.
Over 5000 pages of finger lickin' epic fantasy goodness. :)
Laura, that looks quite interesting! Before my current love affair with UF & PNR, I mostly read Fantasy with some SF thrown in...haven't picked up a new2me series in that genre in awhile...
Steph wrote: "Here are some good #10 options:(Sookie) Dead in the Family

I've read the Sookie #10 and the WotO #10--I'm pretty much always caught up with my series, if a new one comes out, I'm usually on it pretty quickly. Oh, except the latest Georgina, Succubus Shadows, I just haven't been in the mood for Georgina's stupid Seth angst, and stupid Seth in general. :)
And according to the author's website, that Hunters books is #11--the one before it had 2 stories & is listed as #9 & #10. But hey--that makes #10 a novella, which I might be able to swing. Maybe. But that is sooooo not my cuppa. You know my cynical aversion to cheesy PNR. :)
So don't count me in, I'll reevaluate when we get closer to October and see how I'm doing on my To do List. :)
Judithe wrote: "Laura, that looks quite interesting! I haven't read either, but I need to. :)
And I see you loved Susan Cooper's Dark is Rising series--I'm reading them soon for my Lifetime of Books challenge. Glad to see they're good. :)
No worries, Laura. Hope you'll be able to join us. If not, I'm sure I'll be able to snare you with another challenge soon. >:) hehe
Steph wrote: "No worries, Laura. Hope you'll be able to join us. If not, I'm sure I'll be able to snare you with another challenge soon. >:) hehe"Who me? I'm not that easy. Hmph.
I am confused... So we have to have number 10 be the 10th book in a series and number 9 be the 9th book in the series and so on? There is no way I can get up to that many books read by the time this challenge starts... :(
That's right...Where are you at in series now? I went through my list of pre-orders to fill in some spots....
There are some series too that are fine to be read out-of-order...Right off hand, most of Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter series can be read without reading all, and Feehan's Carpathians is similar. (Those have lots of books and could help you with the high number part of the challenge....)
Laura Lulu wrote: "... Anne MacCaffrey & Mercedes Lackey. I haven't read either, but I need to. :)And I see you loved Susan Cooper's Dark is Rising series--I'm reading them soon for my Lifetime of Books challenge. Glad to see they're good. :)

McCaffrey and Cooper's books have been favorites since way back when...They keep moving along with me! Mercedes Lackey is a more "recent" find...I actually read a couple of her books when they came out during my highschool years. I ran across them in Amazon one day, and remembered liking it well enough to buy it (again! my book collection mysteriously disappeared from storage after my move to Japan became permanent...though I have seen some very familiar titles on my sister's shelf when I visit...). I've now got (and enjoy rereading) most of her books....
I confess...I've been a series addict since I was a kid...

I never read ANY series out of order. If I did I know I would regret it later. I just don't know about this one. I am on Dead and Gone but that is the farthest I am in any series. I may have to say no on this one :(
I am sorry I couldn't do it! I just have too many others going on. I love the idea and will probably be able to do one like it if there is another one next year. I just don't have enough long series I am reading that I am that far in yet. I will let you all know if I change my mind

Sandra wrote: "Laura, didn't you say you had 23 active challenges, at the moment. Easy ... I rest my case!"
Watch it sister.
Judithe wrote: "I confess...I've been a series addict since I was a kid..."
The first series I fell in love with... :)
OMG! LMAO!!! <Pot, meet Kettle.>AV, don't worry, hun. There will be many, many others. Some of us have been with a series for quite a while and won't have a problem with this one, or at least not as much of one. CYA at the others. :)
Laura Lulu wrote: "Judithe wrote: "No comment...."Pot, meet Kettle. ..."
Guess the only question is which one is which?
CHALLENGE EDITED: After realizing that a hopscotch "board" typically goes up to #9, not #10. I've edited the challenge to read #1 - 9, then back down, if you choose to, from #8 - 1. If you've already posted your list and wish to read #10 as well, you are welcome to do that and may use it as a bonus book. :) The challenge isn't set to begin until 10/1, so you may edit your list and remove your #10 book, if you'd like.

"Hopscotch Thru Your Series" Challenge
Duration: 3 months (Oct 1 - Dec 31, 2010)
# of Books: 9-17 series books
Rules: Read 9 books from 9 different series. Just like a hopscotch board, you'll have to read UP book 1, book 2, book 3, book 4 and so on up to book 9. In that order and only one book per series.
However, you may choose to read your way back DOWN as well. In which case, after you have read book 10, you'll have to read DOWN book 8, book 7, book 6, and so on down to book 1. If you choose to do these add'l reads, you are allowed to use books from a series you read on your way UP. Meaning it is possible to read more than one book within one series, in order, if you play it right.
Let me know if I've confused anyone. ENJOY!
