Seeing her life become real in this movie she was so sad to me. Not getting to have her HEA was heart breaking.
I could see how some the themes of her books related to her life after seeing that movie (if it was accurate). I liked the movie, it was sad though.
I was unable to finish this movie due to Tom Lefroy's disgusting discussion about...do I really have to say this...no, I don't...
nor she find herself a Darcy either and she died much too young!! I could always find a use for the books she could have written but didn't.
I just watched this movie this weekend. It was very well done. I am glad that they stuck to the story of her life and did not change anything.
I really enjoyed this movie and would recommend it.I thought that Anne Hathaway did a good job as Jane and Maggie Smith(she does a great job in everything)is one of my favorite actresses.
I don't know you managed to get through the animal mating part though. I never did. It ruined the air or let's say aura about Jane. Not that Anne Hathaway was terrible at Ms. Austen's character..it's that it ruined everything for me and plus it disgusted me.
I own, love, and have watched this movie many times. But it should not be taken for a factual account of Jane Austen's life. Yes, Tom Lefroy existed and Jane mentioned in a letter having met, danced, and generally carried on with him on one occasion. The rest is speculation and fiction. This doesn't spoil the story or invalidate the movie, at least not for me. It just puts it in perspective.
I want to watch this so bad. My aunt has seen it, but she says there was one part in it...probably what Anna was talking about, so I haven't gotten to see it yet. Hopefully soon!
Good acting in this movie from both James and Anne. When I first watched this movie Tom made me blush in certain parts. haha...
haha, I just realize how ambiguous my statement was. I meant he made me blush when he did certain of his scenes. Maybe it was because of James Mcvoy. I think it was when I watch this movie, I googled his name to get more movies he starred in :P. It was sad for me when Jane did not get the ending I think she deserved. The writers at least stuck to that true part of her life (pertaining to marriage). I do not want to go into specifics because I do not want to ruin it for you.
This is a site for you if you want to know more about the rating. It is very detailed http://parentpreviews.com/movie-revie...
I liked this a lot but it did make me cry! But if things has worked out better for Jane romantically then maybe she wouldn't have written six novels and what a horrible world it'd be without them ;)
We have started talking about this on another thread so thought I'd post a comment to bring this thread to everyone's attention. So who has seen this, who hasn't? If you haven't, watch it and we can discuss :)
Sarah Louise wrote: "We have started talking about this on another thread so thought I'd post a comment to bring this thread to everyone's attention. So who has seen this, who hasn't? If you haven't, watch it and we ca..."Thanks for doing that, Sarah! :)
I won't have time to watch it before I head out of state, but I think I'm going to get it from my library when I get home.
It's definitely worth watching :) Some of it is more fiction than truth but it gives you an idea of what it was like for a female writer at that time, the obstacles Jane had to overcome, etc. James M is sooo cute too!
Well, I'm sure Soph at least will be proud of me, but I just finished watching Becoming Jane. :)Have you watched it yet Soph? Because I would love to compare views with you.
For the moment, overall impression... :'(
I haven't watched it yet!! I will v v v soon and I want to discuss as well!
Is that sad but good??
Is that sad but good??
Sad but.... sad. :DIt was good, but as you know I am a very wordy (well, that's one way of putting it) person, so I am dying to discuss all the many points of view I have on various parts of the movie.
I will say that I didn't think Anne Hathaway could pull off Austen, but she does wonderfully.
And <3 James McAvoy. :D
:) I did cry a little - and James M is so adorable!Anyway... I've been bothered ever since I finished watching it wondering whether I would have done the same thing as Jane in regards to Tom.
I think I would have gone through with the elopement and fought for a life together, but you don't really know until you've been in that situation, do you?
The only other impressions to talk about that immediately come to mind are:
1. I hate that Judge dude... a lot.
2. I respect that young Wisley man a lot more than I thought I would at the start of the film.
3. I started crying...again...the way that James acted Tom saying his daughters name and kind of stumbling over it - perfect acting, so sweet and sad! :'(
I agree with all your points!Wisley, definitely more likeable than you expect...
I think I would have fought more, I'm quite passionate and did indeed have to overcome some difficult odds to be with my husband (he was worth it!)
And the bit with his daughter, oh so emotional!
Of course, much of the film is fiction and we don't know what really happened... But he did really name his daughter Jane.
Thanks. :)Wisley ended up kind of cute and sensible actually.
I too am passionate and would like to believe that I would have fought more - of course, I have no situation really to compare it to. The only situation in which my "passion" has most presented itself is being asked on a date by the boy that I loved, having him betray me and for more than two years watch him with my best friend, only finally giving up on him after he chose another of my best friends over me. So, not much of a comparison... But I'm glad you got what you wanted. :)
:) It was very emotional! And very sweet too.
I think that fact that he did name his daughter Jane is... telling, to say the least. And besides, apparently when Lefroy was asked on his deathbed who the love of his life was he replied "Jane Austen... in a boyish way." Awwww! :)
