RandomAnthony What are you doing for the fourth weekend? Do you like the fourth? Fireworks? All that?

I think we're going to have a pretty mellow weekend...I'm good with that. I'm going to cut the grass tomorrow so I don't have to think about it over the weekend...might plant a few more things on the side of the house as well. We can see the fireworks from our front lawn. Maybe hit the coffee shop with the older boys one of the weekend mornings. Oh, our local farmers market opens Saturday, too, so I could skip driving to the one a couple towns over, but I'm not sure, the one a couple towns over is way bigger. I'll probably watch some baseball and finish reading Atmospheric Disturbances so I can start The Crying of Lot 49. Maybe I'll hit Costco for Boca Burgers today we can grill out. I like the fact the holiday landed on a Friday. When it's on a Wednesday or whatever the whole week gets messed up. Although I suppose if the holiday is closer to the middle of the week people can combine off days for a longer break.

I like fireworks but around here they're notorious for starting late. I hate that. Growing up my dog was TERRIFIED of the 4th of July, all the fireworks and noise, but Shadow, my current dog, doesn't seem to care much either way.

Happy 4th!!!! I like living in America. Yay America!!!!

(no offense to our international colleagues, of course:)

Hayley | 576 comments I wish we had a fourth of July over here.

I have actually got plans for this weekend because we have family over from Ireland - so i will celebrate the 4th of July with you from over here in lovely England :)

message 3: by Summer (new)

Summer (summerbp) I'm working on the 4th...holiday work = overtime pay! Yay! After work, who knows? My husband has to work, too, so I'll probably just putz around at home. On Saturday, I'm attending a friend's wedding. We'll see how that goes.

I enjoy the 4th, but I've never really done much. A friend who used to live on the lake used to have a big fireworks display every year, but that's done with now.

Hayley | 576 comments Charly, Guy Fawkes is the 5th November and he tried to blow up the House of Lords along time back and he was charged with treason against King and Country - not sure how he died. On the 5th November we build massive bonfires and put a Guy Fawkes effigy on top of it, then we set fireworks off and play with sparkles. Great fun as a kid, not so fun now.

Fireworks are not a very big hit in Alaska for the 4th. It tends to be a bit bright out. (Still getting 21 hours of sunlight) Our original plans were to go with a bunch of friends out to the Minto flats and party all weekend. But then I caught the nasty, so I will probably sit at home, maybe have a BBQ for those that don’t go out to the flats.

message 6: by Hayley (new)

Hayley | 576 comments Just remembered - Guy Fawkes was hung, drawn adn quartered - pretty grisly. The Bonfire is a celebration of the fact that the plot was stopped and parilment didn't go up in smoke. I should know all of this but I had to use google!!!

message 7: by Ruth (new)

Ruth Just woke up and realized the 4th is upon us. We'll ask our two daughters and kids if they want to come watch fireworks from our patio. From there we'll be able to see fireworks over the ocean from 2 different cities. We'll probably have hot dogs, cole slaw and watermelon.

message 8: by Not Bill (new)

Not Bill | 1061 comments RA, curious - why the need to apologize for stating your love of country whilst on your own soil? That just seems rather odd. But, I whole heartedly second your sentiment. Happy Independence day (almost) y'all!

message 9: by Not Bill (new)

Not Bill | 1061 comments Idiot libruls out here banned fireworks at the ocean. Hell, they even banned fires. Schmucks.

message 10: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony NB, I simply did not want to exclude our international Axis colleagues from either the conversation or their own national pride. They're welcome in the backyard this weekend as well...perhaps they'll bring good fireworks;)

message 11: by Not Bill (new)

Not Bill | 1061 comments Of course RA, we would never want to exclude. Fireworks are most welcome. Growing up, we had neighbors that would go to Wyoming just to bring back fireworks. We'd set cherry bombs on all the street lights and use cigarettes as delayed fuses. The shock of the cherry bomg going off would knock out the lights for about an hour or so, and then it would show time. Fun stuff!

Sarah (songgirl7) We're going to a Sacramento Rivercats game (triple A baseball) tomorrow night, and they'll have fireworks after. Friday morning Brent and I will get up and watch 1776 which is our tradition. Then in the afternoon a gaggle of theatre friends are coming over for burgers and dogs and potato salad and your standard BBQ fare. One of the theatre "kids" (she's 19 but will always be a kid to me) is a dancer with Radio Disney and she has her last show before going off to college so we're all going to see that, then come back to our house for board games and a Mario Kart tournament. We're not setting off fireworks for a few reasons, but mainly because of all the fires in CA and the extremely dry conditions. If they set them off at the Roseville fairgrounds, we'll be able to see them from our back yard.

Riley doesn't like fireworks either but she just hides under the table in my husband's office. She doesn't freak out or anything, she just hides.

My mom is marching in the 4th of July Parade in my home town (where I grew up) Sonoma. She will be marching in the pro-Obama contingent. So, as the only local daughter available that morning, I will be standing faithfully by the side of the Square to take pictures of my mom, marching around the square with her bright red pants on. Hopefully this will earn me some BBQ.

My daughter will be going with her dad to watch her Uncle crush cars and blow shit up on his ranch with his tanks. Yes, real tanks. He collects them. He has something like 80 of them now. Yes, real ones. Their family is a little eccentric.

Then.... laying in the field and watching fireworks directly overhead. It's one of the things I love best about my home town. My mom brings one of her clients, Bucky, who is a 6 1/2 foot tall 50 year old retarded man who makes the most amusing noises when he sees fireworks I have ever heard.

Yes, it's a special 4th. Yes, my life is often like this. I don't really have a "normal".

Chris and I are flying to California on the 4th to go to his grandfather's house in Escondido. Grandpa Phil is turning 90, so the family is gathering to celebrate over the long weekend!

I go to my hometown in SE Minnesota (pop. 2600) to watch the fireworks. We sit on the hill over- looking the baseball fields to watch them. Everyone I went to high school with shows up (and shows off). I just like sitting with my family and watching the fireworks. We are alway right on cue with our oooohhh and aaaahhhhs. My mom always does a big grill-out, too, so we eat until we're stuffed. Ah, the small town fireworks. Gotta love them!

message 16: by Not Bill (new)

Not Bill | 1061 comments My daughter, fresh back from surf camp, is infected with the camping bug and inisists we go camping over the holiday weekend. Will be interesting to see what can be done at last minute. Usually, it's watching nephews play in Little League All Star Tournaments, family BBQ and watching the firework show from my back deck.

DakChar - I like yer uncle's style. It's good to see someone who has a firm grasp of this whole "freedom" thingy.

Not my Uncle, actually NB... it's my ex-brother-in-law. And yes, I'm certain you would appreciate his collection. Perhaps you should make a jaunt there one of these days:

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it, Charissa. Randomanthony, don't even bother...

message 36: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony I didn't, although "desecration of the Beatles" tempted me...

Charissa (dakinigrl) | 3614 comments Mod
RA... they aren't desecrating the Beatles on purpose, so you would probably just find it even more torturous than I did.

Swoony, beautiful Beatles' harmonies, mmmmm....
"Dear Prudence" just sang, even though the pretense for singing it was dumb. I didn't care, the music swept me away, just like Calgon!
