Hey guys, I'm sorry I'm not on here much. I'm not on the internet much. I have however come across a great book. It is called Vampires, a field guide to creatures that stalk the night. It is a book that covers major vampire folklores from all over the world. It isn't totally accurate but it is incredibly interesting. great illustrations as well. I will post it on the book shelf.

I'm may have to take a look at this book, I have a fasination with Vampire and they myths, legends and folklore surrounding them. I'm going to see if I can get it off Amazon.

I ordered the book of amazon and can't wait to read about the different vampire myths, you never know I may come up with a story to go with one of the myths.

I've been reading the book and its really fasinating, may give me ideas for writing a book - I love to write but have no idea where to start.

I'v just finished reading this book and it is brilliant, I never realised just how many veriations on the vampire legend there is. It is also interesting to note that Bram Stokers version of a vampire is a bit wide of the mark. if you can get hold of this book I would.

Dylan, thats an interesting idea, I think we should do something like that and try and get everyone involved, I'm sure Josh won't mind.

Hayley you are so right. There are variations galore with vampire legend. I love seeing how authors take from these legends. I was even reading online the other day about a disease that is similar to "vampirism" and how it has sparked the myth along. I wonder if that is what "I am Legend" was based on. I haven't read it yet, but the description on the back of the book sounds like it.

I've not read 'I am Legend' yet but I've seen the film and not sure how close they are. I would have to look this up on the internet and see how much is has influcenced the myth of the vampire. Reading the book gave me a idea for a book - I'd love to right but I always end with a story that looks like the last one I read, so annoying. In the book, their are The Vampire Ladies of America and it would quite interesting if I could weave a story around this legend. I'll have to work on a plan.

The only vampire books ive relly read are Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles id like to read some others any suggestions

try The Travelling Vampire show by Richard Laymon, quite an interesting take on Vampire's. Also, read Dracula by Bram Stoker because its a brilliant read and is a classic. I can't think of anymore just at the moment. Maybe one day you'll be reading my book lol

Salem's lot's a great read!
I loved it! Kinda a mordern version of Dracula.
Fangland also a good read.
I Am Legend as well.

I am Legend is sooooo good! one billion times better than the movie! You'll love it, so much more happens in the book.

I love vampire novels! Not sure, Mole, whether my chick taste will appeal to you, but the "Anita Blake" series by Laurell K Hamilton is really good. I think you would like books 1-4, but after that is anyone's guess.

Patricia Briggs writes a series about a were-coyote's run in with vamps in book two of her Mercy Thompson series. It's called Blood Bound. The vampire bad guy is bad ass.

If you like Dracula, The Historian might also appeal to you. It's long, very long.

"I am Legend" is on my to read list, but the movie freaked me out so badly that I am trying to get it out of my head before I read the book. I've been told that the movie is really different from the book.

I just got Necroscope today, and am going to read it later.
Does anyone like Necroscope?

Hey Dylan, Necroscope sounds interesting. Necromancy is a gift of Anita Blake and in that series she finds herself up against the mother of all vampires who has her similar gifts. So I would definately be interested in reading this. Good suggestion!

Talking about SK, there is a short story in one of his collections that is regarding Vampires - I can't remember the name but I remember the plot line. Its based on Salem's Lot, its driving me mad that I can't remember the name of the story or which collection its in.

Hayley, I think the story you're thinking of is actually called "Jerusalem's Lot" (the full name of the town from Salem's Lot, it's in Night Shift.

I'll second Dylan's recommendation of I am Legend, it has actually been filmed a number of times:
Last Man on Earth (1964), The Omega Man (1971) and now the Will Smith version.
None of the movies have come close to the book.

And for a variation on the vampire genre, I'll really have to pimp the Swedish vampire in Let the Right One In, you may have heard of it as the film version (Swedish, as well) seems to get rave reviews among horror fans.

Excellent novel, one of the top vampire stories I've read. Not your normal explanation, but very believable.

If you want a great vampire book that covers every myth over the centuries to today try Theresa Bane's Actual Factual Dracula: A Compendium of Vampires.

Another vampire novel is The Hunger by Whitley Strieber . There's a sequel, The Last Vampire, though I never read it yet.

hey Cairnraiser I have to agree with you about I am Legend.. I really enjoyed the book much more than the movie although I liked the film for what it was but it is so different from the book you get a much different experience from the original story..

So, The Historian was good? I have been thinking about reading it for some time.

Maybe I should give it another try but I just couldn't get into it. So many people are still talking about it, maybe Ill be in the mood to try again later. But it was rather slow.

its definitely long but I really liked it at first I had some trouble getting into it but then I got sucked into the story

Theres is two versions before the Will Smith version Legend. The first one stars Vincent Price and is closest to the novella. The second one is from the 70s, with Charlton Heston.

I love the original movie. I really need to read the book.

Speaking of vampires. I was at Borders today and they are selling off their calendars for one dollar each. There were these vampire ones left that are really cool.
Boogeymanuals Presents: Vampire: Bloodlines. A 13 month calendar.
Each month has a different vampire with some info and a danger rating. Very cool art.
There are -
Impaler, Soul Sucker, Strigoi, etc.
Well worth a buck for the art alone.

Maybe you should check the Borders website and see if that calendar is up there and order it that way. Then you avoid the mall.
Talking vamps: there's the novelization of 30 days of Night, plus the graphic novels which the movie is off of.

That was a fun book. The illustrations were great!
