I recall a childrens book that I read maybe 40 years ago about a grandmother telling her grandkids about a treasure hunt that her father had set up before he went away (civil war?) and the kids never solved it. Then the woman's grandkids find a clue and...

Anyone recall the title of this book?

In the Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle books by Betty MacDonald, whenever Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle is getting low on money, she finds some pirate treasure her husband hid for her before he died. Finally, in one book, she's run out of money completely. All the neighbor children take sections of her house (during a rainstorm, and the basement is flooding) and hunt for more treasure. One little girl snags her pocket on something in the attic, and uncovers a hoard of pirate gold. Does that sound right?

In googling, I found this title. It sounds like it 'might' be what you were thinking of. (I haven't read it myself.)
