Nina==There are lots of lists on the Internet that list quality books. For example: http://www.classical-homeschooling.or...If you want something more in depth, try John Trelease's "Read Aloud Handbook" (Secular) or "Honey For a Child's Heart" (Written by a Christian author)

We also have a Picture Book Club here on Children's Books and you might find some books that appeal to you by browsing through the titles on our Master Lists or specific monthly reads threads.

I'm still trying to help Nina come up with something(s) specifically related to Muddypaws but since my library doesn't have the book, I'm having difficulty guessing what to compare it to. I didn't care for the fish book, so I can't evaluate and relate anything to it, either, sorry. Nina, I have a vague sense you might like things like the best of Leo Lionni - have you tried his work?
ETA - can't find a description of Muddypaws here on GR or on Amazon, either. So I googled and got the gist from reviews (adventures of a new puppy and a little boy as they try to come up with a good name for the puppy) but no good description for the GR librarians to add.
