In Chapter One, Alanna and Coram are traveling south to Tyra. Along the way, they are attacked by hillmen and Lightening (her sword) was damaged. The Bazhir attack the hillmen and invite Alanna and Coram back to "share their fire".
Alanna and Coram are given their own tent, until the Bazhir tribe (the Bloody Hawk)decide what will happen to them. When they gather around the fire, Alanna is shocked by the honesty of the Bazhir people. And when her fate is put to a vote, it is decided that she will fight.
