I'm one of the most vocal supporters of The Book Depository and like to "pimp" them at every opportunity as Lu said. They really are that great.

Something interesting I noticed was that there is a price difference between the .uk and .com versions of the site.

As example:
The Strain - $8.99 at Bookdepository.com
The Strain - $9.27 at Bookdepository.co.uk

That's for the exact same book. Taking a quick look at my wishlist items, it seems the UK version of the site tends to slightly more expensive in most cases.

So it would be a good idea to compare the prices between the two different versions of the site before ordering. Interestingly enough your login details will work on both sites, but your wishlist isn't shared among the different versions.

message 2: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I didn't know there were two different versions of the site! What's up with that?

message 3: by Crusader (new)

Crusader (crusaderza) | 2457 comments Mod
Apparently they cater to the different regions. The UK version for example has different books highlighted, different best sellers and seem to focus more on British authors as well.

message 4: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Why the price difference then? That's just unfair.

I checked the books I bought - one was very slightly more expensive on the .com version, but the others are all cheaper :(
Guess it's a good thing that I got a refund on the e-books so I can get the cheaper versions now.
Thanks for the heads-up Crusader!

No problem. I honestly don't understand the price difference either. I've mostly bought from the .com site in any case and only now noticed the discrepancy. In future I'll recommend people visit the .com site first.

message 6: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I compared some of my wishlisted books across the two sites. Most of the time .com is cheaper, but it varies, so I think the best thing to do would be to do a comparison whenever you're planning on buying something.

Annoying that the wishlist doesn't carry over, but whatever's cheaper on .com I'll wishlist there, and wishlist on .co.uk when that's cheaper.

I have only used .com at-least

Oh and I had to cancel a order, long story, but I got refunded a hour later and I could order again :)

message 8: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I really like Tachyon Publications' speculative fiction collections - mostly sci fi, fantasy, and horror short stories, but there are also a few novels and non-fiction titles here and there.
Check them out: http://www.bookdepository.com/search/...

Some of them are available as ebooks for about half the price, mostly in pdf, for which you will need to download Adobe Digital Editions.

message 9: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith So hooked on Book Depository now! Whenever I'm bored I work on my wishlist, and I love how, thanks to free shipping, I can just buy books whenever I like instead of trying to order in bulk to make the package more cost effective.

Yes, they are incredible. Just got 4 more books from them. I really have to stop buying and focus on reading!

Book Depository is having a 10% discount promotion. You enter your friend's emails, they get a 10% discount voucher, you get a voucher, and when they use their voucher, you get another 10% off voucher.

We could get quite a discount if we play this right :P

Who will be my friend that buys from Book Depositoy? *evil grin*

message 12: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Ooh, me, me, pick me!

Maybe if everyone who is interested could say so here and then we could pass each other's email addresses around?

message 13: by Chrizette (last edited Nov 13, 2010 02:15AM) (new)

Chrizette | 906 comments I am having a giveaway on my blog from the 17th where the prize will be from Book Depository. So you can add me. PM me with the details.

I'm also in. Have been planning to buy a couple of books before the end of the month. So if someone is going to send emails PM me for mine.

I'm in!

message 16: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Does anyone know how to use the vouchers? I can't see where to put in the voucher code.

message 17: by Crusader (new)

Crusader (crusaderza) | 2457 comments Mod
You have to click the link in the e-mail. Log in and then place the items in your cart. When you go to checkout it should show your voucher code at the top of the checkout page. Click on 'Apply voucher'.

The voucher should now be applied and you pay 10% less.

message 18: by Chrizette (new)

Chrizette | 906 comments If you click on the voucher icon in the mail you received, it fills in the code for you when you checkout.

Just bought my first book from BD yesterday!

message 19: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Cool, thanks, I just managed to figure it out :)

It seems that the voucher ties you to the specific version of the site it came from. So I was trying to shop on .com but the voucher was from .co.uk.

BTW, did you guys get a voucher from me?

message 20: by Crusader (new)

Crusader (crusaderza) | 2457 comments Mod
Seems you can receive only one voucher to a specific address. I haven't receive any aside from one a non-Goodreads member mailed me. Guess they were first.

I placed my discounted order on Monday already.

message 21: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Oh, bugger, so much for our master plan :(

message 22: by Crusader (new)

Crusader (crusaderza) | 2457 comments Mod
Yup. They figured someone would try to game the system. At least you still get one voucher out of it at a minimum, now you just need to place a large order at once to make best use of it.

message 23: by Lu (new)

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
Sigh will have to place a large order then. Till when do we have?

message 24: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith 15 December.

Just a friendly reminder. Those who haven't used their 10% Off vouchers at The Book Depository needs to do so before the 15th of December.

If you want to stand a change of getting it before Christmas you need to order by Friday and that's with a very short 9 day delivery estimate. For me it takes about 11 business days, but larger cities might get theirs sooner.

10% Discount at Bookdepository.co.uk

Not that my budget needed this, but The Book Depository is offering a 10% discount till the 20th of January.

Follow this link and enter FCBZ10 in the coupon block during checkout.

I think you will be able to use it more than once for multiple purchases.

Act soon before the time runs out!

Lauren Smith Lol, Crusader, didn't you say you already blew this year's book budget? If you keep this up you're going to wear out your budgets for the rest of the decade :)

Lauren wrote: "Lol, Crusader, didn't you say you already blew this year's book budget? If you keep this up you're going to wear out your budgets for the rest of the decade :)"

Yes and yes. At least I've now run out of books I HAVE to buy which leaves me with books I just WANT to buy! ;)

message 31: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I still can't fathom the very idea of blowing your year's book budget and, consequently, not buy ANY books for the rest of the YEAR. Just doesn't compute...

message 32: by Crusader (new)

Crusader (crusaderza) | 2457 comments Mod
Depends on what you are buying.

I've ordered 3 individual titles, 3 box sets (x3 books), 4 omnibus editions with 3 titles each and have pre-orders in for 1 box set (4 books), 1 individual title and 2 more omnibus editions.

The pre-orders should give me something to look forward to for the rest of the year.

message 33: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Ah, ok, that's a bit different. Still though, I would miss the pleasure of shopping for books.

Lauren wrote: "Ah, ok, that's a bit different. Still though, I would miss the pleasure of shopping for books."

That's true. Although I buy 99% of my books online so there's not that much pleasure in shopping for books.

Of course there's nothing *technically* preventing me from buying more books if I should come across a great deal or a title I want.

Just a bump. Time it running out for the 10% discount, so if you were planning on getting something now would be a good time.

Just wanted to say how much I love Bookdepo! It makes my life so much better getting to buy cheap books :)

Apparently the 10% discount is still active. So if you want to buy something you can still try your luck.

Book Depository is the bane of my budget. I spend way too much with them. In fact I'm hoping to get my next package tomorrow...

Lu wrote: "Just imagine what your budget would look like if you didn't have bookdepo!"

A lot more solvent, since I wouldn't be buying so many books.

Yet again I couldn't resist the temptation. Does anyone want to start a Book Depository addict support group? Looks like I need it!

message 40: by Lu (new)

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
Hehe the group would probably only talk about great deals and make you want to buy more :P

message 41: by Claudia (new)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments I don't order books often, but when I do I don't like to wait months to get them. I've only placed 3 orders with BookDepo so far. The first one took 9 weeks to arrive, second took 6 weeks and for the third I'm entering the fifth week of waiting. All for books that was shipped the day after I placed the order. It's sad. With exclus1ves.co.za it takes max 3 weeks. Guess I'll avoid BookDepo from now on.

Where are you situated Kahlan? That's really strange. I'm in the middle of nowhere, and my books arrive within 11 business days. That more or less beats any local store I've shopped at.

I can't understand why your orders are taking so long to reach you.

message 43: by Crusader (new)

Crusader (crusaderza) | 2457 comments Mod
Just checked. The last batch I received from them contained 2 books shipped on the 4th of January and one shipped on the 6th of January. My local post office had them on the 19th, and I picked them up on the 20th.

message 44: by Claudia (new)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments I live in Mpumalanga, also in the middle of nowhere. I was thinking it could be my local post office, but I usually check the dates of packages arriving, and they send out slips 1-3 days after that. Maybe customs just don't like me and I'm being screened for terrorist activity. =P

message 45: by Crusader (new)

Crusader (crusaderza) | 2457 comments Mod
Must be something like that then. I had one book disappear and after two weeks the postman attempted to hand deliver it to our tiny post box. My guess was that the staff neglected to give it to me when I picked the others up.

Thanks for the confirmation. I was about convinced that my local post office employed magical faerie creatures that's why mine got here so soon. ;)

Another 10% off at Book Depository

I found another 10% discount link for the Book Depository. It seems to work for any payment method, not just American Express card holders.

Click this link and use code AMEX11

message 49: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I see Book Depository is giving away free eBooks.

All classics by the looks of things, but it's still nice to stock up anyway :)
