Ivan I've only just started this memoir - based on her diaries from 1920 to 1932; thus far it's fascinating and compelling.

Ivan The book is novelistic in execution, which makes it very easy to read.

Ivan I haven't really said anything more about this. My bad. I loathe and dispise those ten ton biographies with all that detail you forget ten minutes after you turn the page. This is NOT on of those, it's a simple memoir of her growing up. It's very candid and revealing and a real pleasure to read from start to finish. She comments about her relationship with her parents, her courtship with film director Sir Carol Reed ("The Third Man," "The Fallen Idol" and "Oliver!"), her husband Major Browning, and her greatest love of all - Cornwall.

Karen (karen2023) This book is going on my "to-read" list! Thanks!

Ivan I was captivated by her story. I realise that she was a daughter of great priviledge, yet her writing is grounded and unaffected. She also wrote a biography of her father - Sir Gerald du Maurier - one of the great actor managers of his day [we of the "movie" era don't know much about him because he didn't enjoy working in film as a rule, and didn't appear in many that are remembered today].

Misfit | 150 comments Have you read The Parasites yet? Many say that she uses her own family as the backdrop for her characters.

Ivan No, but I'll look for it.

The Parasites

I have a very old copy that is crumbling but still worth it. Good luck on finding a copy. I wish they would republish it.
