Laura (laurajwryan) | 10 comments I'm Laura J. Wellner, my pseudonym is Laura J. W. Ryan, I'm an artist, a writer, and I live in an old farmhouse on top of a windswept hill with my Fred, our son, four cats, and one dog named Max.

I'm an independently published author of two literary fiction novels, Dusty Waters: A Ghost Story (2009), and The Fractured Hues of White Light (2010) both are published under my independent imprint Field Stone Press, printed and distributed by Createspace.

My blog is the best place to find out about me, what I'm doing, what I'm thinking about, and I post photographs from my digital sketchbook of my acre of the world.

I'm currently editing my next novel, Drinking from the Fishbowl with an anticipated release date June 21, 2011. And I'm also squeezing in turning my two novels into Ebooks...all I can say is it's a good thing I'm OCD enough to actually "enjoy" doing it once I get going!

My novels are complex, densely written tomes with contemporary adult content (for reference, they are an "R" rating comparative to Joyce Carol Oates), so they're not for the squeamish or for those who are sensitive about harsh language and themes.

It is perhaps the bravest thing to do to publish independently... being a writer isn't for the faint of heart... I certainly have no illusions of "getting rich quick", it isn't about the money, I'm doing what I love to do.

Laura (laurajwryan) | 10 comments For the heck of it... since this is the Meet the Authors, I thought I would make a post of 9 things about me as a person...authors are human.

1) I love cats, I currently have 4... Fatty Woo, Charlie the Doo-Hickey, Tiggy-Pooh (his full name is Crouching Tigger-Hidden Pooh), and Willy Big (he was once Willy Little, but he eventually became very big.)

2) I have one dog name Max...he is a Lab/Collie mix, very sweet, very quiet, black with a white star on his chest, a big dog with tiny feet. His neck ruffles become fuzzy and curly when he gets wet.

3) I've been married to my Fred for 25 years as of August 17th this year.

4) I'm an accomplished horseman in both hunt seat and dressage. I rode on the Cazenovia College Equestrian team in 1981-1982. Sadly, I haven't ridden a horse in over ten years.

5) I started writing my first novel Washed Glass on April 29th 1999, and finished the first draft on October 29th 1999...it was a cumbersome 920 pages. It has since been whittled down over the years, but being a first novel, it has a long way to go before I'll let it see the light of day. It is a story about reincarnation and the psychological impact on two people who recall their past lives through their dreams.

6) I went to college for painting, finished my BFA at Syracuse University in 1984. I'm still actively painting and exhibiting my artwork.

7) I work a full time job at the Syracuse University Art Galleries as the Registrar of the University's Art Collection, I've been there for 21 years. (I love my day job.)

8) I'm a partner in a little co-op art gallery (along with my Fred, who is also an artist) in Liverpool, New York along with two other artist friends. We recently christened it "Moonlighting" as we are all working full time day jobs and making time to make our art, therefore, we are moonlighting as artists. (Yet another experimental DIY effort in my life.)

9) I learned about photography and developing film in my father's darkroom that he built in our basement when I was about 10 years old. Although I miss the process of being in the darkroom, my little point n' shoot digital camera gives me a great deal of freedom to gather images from my acre of the world without the mess and expense. (I especially love black and white images.)

(Why only 9 things? I happen to like the number 9...and I'm crazy about odd numbers.) So I guess this would count as ten things...
